ParticipantHere is my interpretation of Melodic Etude.
Thank you very much Steven for the excellent lesson. I have practiced this piece for most of October, I hope you like the result. I am looking forward to winning this ukulele because it would be a dream come true, it could be a thousand years and still not get a ukulele of that level.
Also a big thank you to Andrew for building this beautiful and impressive community.Thank you so much!

Getting into it in the beginning was quite the challenge, but after tackling the initial difficulties in the right hand the piece actually got really fun!
Also, could we do some xmas themed song(s) in the next stages? I’d love to be able to play something for the holidays. Stay safe everyone 🙂

MemberSteven, thanks very much for the positive feedback. When I tried Out in the North for the previous challenge I gave up on the triple pick version very quickly. I’m now looking forward to trying again. I was going to say ‘fingers crossed I can do better’ but crossing my fingers probably won’t help 🙂

ParticipantThanks for the feedback, Steven. I am now trying to play St. Annes Reel and its also difficult. But hopefully soon I’ll be able to play it somehow 🙂 Is there any other easy song you would suggest is well suited to play with this triple pick approach?

Hello!
This is my Triple Strum Etude. I am a beginner and still have a lot of work to do on this song/technique. It’s nice to let go of the perfectionist and share no matter the stage of learning.

Here is my melodic etude. I might be from Ireland but I’m not a fan of trad music, so I steered clear of St Anne’s Reel!
I love this technique. Will definitely try and incorporate it elsewhere.October 29, 2020 at 5:58 pm #41568Andrew
KeymasterHere’s everyone on page 10.
joannetala – Wow Joanne! What a beautiful and amazing sounding Kanile’a. Congrats, you deserve it! I was very impressed with your performance, right hand technique is spot-on. Excellent work! The only critique I have is to watch your timing as to not speed up as you progress through the piece. But overall, bravo!
karenj – well done, Karen! Right hand technique looks great! My suggestion is to slow the tempo a little bit. That way you’ll be able to focus on increasing the sustain throughout the entire piece. Here’s a video I made early on this month for another member with some tips on this subject.
haroldh101 – you should definitely participate more, Harold! Excellent job getting the technique down and a great performance overall. Well done!
xarqin – I love your sense of dynamics – you took it and made it your own! Love that. So you’ve got two-thirds of the technique down: pick – pick. But the first hit, the ‘strum’ should not mimic a typical strum. Rather the motion comes from the flick of the index rather than the motion of the wrist.
Here’s a video that I sent another member in private a few days ago. It explains/demos the three attacks in greater detail.
themccoys – well done! Try to get a little bit more of the “flick attack” which occurs at the first joint of the index finger for the first hit. Check out the video that I embedded above for @xarqin for a better explanation/demo of this.

Hi Andrew and Steven,
thank you for a really challenging challenge. Triple strum is new to me and I enjoyed learning this technique. Here’s my October submission. It’s not perfect, but I can’t do better – yet. 🙂

I wish I could play it faster but then my pinky was too slow to reach the correct string in time. With more practice it will get more fluid, I’m sure.

After Out in the North I was secretly hoping there would be more lessons teaching this style, I’m so stoked to see it actually happened!!! So thanks for that RC101, and of course Steven for teaching it really well!!! I went for St Anne’s reel, which was a challenge, but a very fun one 🙂 good job everyone who has submitted already.
PS: the sound in my vid seems to be very quiet, does anyone have tips on how to edit that, so it becomes louder? So you don’t have to listen at 100 volume and then get scared to death at the next video when you forget to turn it down?

Participant@schaap123 very nice entry of St. Anne’s Reel, good job!
Regarding the Audio Volume: it helps if you record Audio and Video seperately from each other, preferably with a dedicated mic, and put it together afterwards. If if you don’t have one, a second phone placed closer to the Uke just to record the audio can begin to do the trick 🙂
The overall Sound quality still won’t be too great but at least that’s how I worked it out for my first recordings.-

Hey Everyone,
Well done so far – awesome tunes being played.
I’m late to this competition – the school term has been madness itself. I needed half term to get priorities realigned and get some quality uke in! Not a very polished performance in 5 days, but a super fun tune and technique…. I’ll keep working on it.
Take care all,
Lisa x -
