The_Bumble_BardParticipant@Andrew, thank you so much! That’s so nice to hear. I still hope I can learn the strumming with the miss strums, but that’s going to take a while to integrate into my brain and hands. π I feel like I can already play the solo better than that, maybe I should try rerecording it, but I will try practicing it again that way. π Thank you very much again! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@muzikmama, oh that’s so cool! That’s a very pretty version. It’s more like a folksy chord melody version rather than a fingerstyle classical version, which is more what I’m attempting to do. I really like that though, thank you for sharing. His is also in G major and (from what I understand) mine is in C major and C minor. The theme he did is the same as the one I fleshed out more in the second video. The first video was really me practicing what I’d figured out so far. I hope I get a chance to record again soon because I feel like I’ve made progress even since those last videos.
That’s sort of what I want to do, too, is not the whole song, but just my favorite portions / themes from it. I’d love to share the tabs with you for sure, it makes me happy and encouraged that you’d want to play it. π It will be better than those recordings when I’m done I think.
I think you’re right about polyrhythms. I think that’s what’s happening there. At least you know this arrangement will be easy, especially with the theory, because I literally don’t understand a lot of that aspect of things. π
Anyway, hopefully I can update this soon, but I’ll keep working on this until then. ‘Squite fascinating, this song. π Thank you for your encouraging comments! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@muzikmama, thank you very much!! I really appreciate that. Trying to learn songs by ear is an enjoyable challenge for me. Although, it got to a point with the beginning now that I realized I had to reference the sheet music for piano that the song was originally written for, just because I wanted at least the iconic beginning to be accurate–And also it’s hard enough being in double time (I think it’s called) where two different time signatures (rhythms?) are happening at once. I’m sure you knew that since you know a version of it. I never knew this song on piano which is why it’s funny that now I’m trying to play it on uke with a fraction of the range. π But I like that challenge too. I heard the song before on piano obvs, but once I heard it on harp it inspired me to try it on uke. Just so beautiful and crazy. π
You know a version of this on uke? Where did you find that? Once I get further along with this I could definitely share the tabs here if you’d like to try it. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@richo_uke, ha, thank you! I appreciate that. I lead a rich fantasie life. ππ
Thank you! Parts of it are definitely possible, but I really hope I can capture (at least a version of) the first two minutes or so.
I am starting to make progress on the beginning. Obviously that’s going to be one of the hardest parts. π That’s a pretty crazy thirty seconds, right out of the gate. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantHere is actually a better take of the one theme:
Something went wrong with the recording though and it was pretty poor quality. I did try to edit it, but it didn’t help a lot. It sounds like I dropped the mic into a bowl of jello 2/3 of the way through. π I’m hoping something just wasn’t plugged in all the way or something. π£
Anyway, I hope you like the theme so far, even though it sounds like it’s being played on Benjamin Franklin’s glass harmonica. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantWelcome Mika! That arrangement is very beautiful and cool, even though I don’t know that movie or song. π It seems like a challenging arrangement which is always fun and it sounds really nice. Welcome! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@katazumiri, ha, that’s not the first time I forgot to turn off a fan while recording. π πΆ I feel like a ticking clock could really be way more distracting because you’re obvs trying to match a rhythm and I don’t know what the exact rhythm of a clock is; unlikely that it would match. π
I did practice a bit more than three days, but not as much as I should’ve with the track perhaps because that was quite a different experience. Way more pressure to keep up and I messed up even more than usual. I probably should’ve gotten a few more takes because I know I would’ve done better with the fingerpicking parts for sure, which I actually was pretty okay with until the track started going. π Yes, I thought about 75% speed, maybe next time I’ll try that, too. I had to track the pizza too because I couldn’t hear the front door from where I was. π ππ π³π Maybe I should’ve waited to record, but it has turned out to be one of my last chance to record it. π ππ
I’m not surprised you started your entry then because there was so much involved and it turned out really great. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantOh, this is so fun! I really like voting for things, man!
I vote for How Far I’ll Go from Moana by LMM.
And welcome to Mika Kane, as well! That first lesson was awesome! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantI AM A PREMIUM MEMBER
So, I tried The Hourglass this month. It is a very beautiful tune. I think it’s cool that the songs with backing tracks include the sheet music for the different instruments, like piano and guitar, which I didn’t realize because this is my first time playing with a backing track. I want to get a keyboard so I can try playing the piano part at some point, like some people did. @katazumiri nailed that feat near the beginning of the challenge; I think she played all the parts if I remember right? Really good. As are everyone’s entries this month. π
This was only my fifth take, so I’m pretty proud of that, even though there are definitely issues. You might think I’m referencing the tabs on my phone throughout, but in fact I was tracking a pizza I ordered while I was recording. I’m not okay. π
I also forgot to turn off a fan before recording. π£
Sorry, @Andrew, your song was beautiful before I got to it, but thank you so much for the challenge, great music, and fun. π
The thumbnail turned out unintentionally amazing. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@jbmills07, I definitely will give that one a chance! I wonder if it’s on Amazon Prime because that’s the only streaming platform I have. π π That is interesting. I don’t know how old that movie is, but if it’s around the ’90’s or early 2000’s that’s pretty on brand for that time period–Those who grew up watching the movies from the Disney Renaissance (i.e., the OG animated Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and even before that with Bambi and Snow White) those who grew up watching those movies know that sometimes sea witches meet untimely ends and villains fall off cliffs. π π Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like it’s not as much like that now with animated movies. I am intrigued, I will let you know what I think when I watch it! π
I don’t think you have to bow out of the challenges! You could always just ask to be omitted from the prize drawing. I’ve done that a bunch of times, especially after winning the electric uke. I have wondered if anyone has won more than once. Haha aww no, well, I understand how you feel about that for sure but it doesn’t show at all if that makes you feel better! π Straight up, there are songs that I’ve clearly stumbled my way through, as I will this month probably, but it’s awesome to try things that are, well, challenging! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@jbmills07, I’ll defs have to look for that one, then, since you recommend it so highly! I did see My Neighbor Totoro when I was a kid and I remember being creeped out by the main creature. ππ I’m also scared of slothes though, so I’m not a normal gauge of such things. I’ll give that one you recommend a watch though! π
Haha, well, you also already won a Kanile’a so I suppose you don’t necessarily need another one. π Not that that should stop you from joining the challenges, obvs. π Your entries are always lovely to watch because you play with a lot of feeling and skill of course. I hope I can pull together a decent entry at least.
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@jbmills07, thank you so much! Hmmm, I wouldn’t say I’m fully on the mend, but hoping I can get there. Ha, I need to just draw one out so you can get an idea of what it’ll be like. π I haven’t tried playing any of them yet, but really looking forward to it! I don’t really know anime at all, but those songs are very beautiful. I actually still have to record the challenge song for this month. I know it pretty well, hopefully I won’t have too many issues with the backing track (I will). π π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@jbmills07, haha!! That seems like something I would do, no worries at all. ππ I am still honored that you would read it. π That’s so flippin’ nice that you say that about the live lessons, it’s pretty obvious that I love those lessons and the interactions I have with Matt and Andrew and all my friendos here, even though it’s in many ways parasocial. I have so much fun writing those replies, tryna be funny while still contributing something relevant, so that means a lot that you say that, thank you. π I don’t remember if you said that part the first time. π
I’ve sadly been having some health issues the past few weeks so I haven’t progressed much on this but rest assured it will happen. π I already have multiple visuals in mind for the book. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@musiclover, very lovely job on that one! I’m also trying to work on The Hourglass, but, as expected, am struggling with the strumming section. I love the sound of all the ones with the backing tracks, but they all have elements I avoid when picking a song for these, which is strumming… and playing with a backing track. π π Therefore, I chose The Hourglass because it seems like a good one to start with if you’ve never played with a backing track, which I haven’t. π π
But for the strumming part, I was having so much trouble with the “miss strums” because even if I’m doing the strumming motion without striking, I lose track of the rhythm doing that, if that makes sense. So, I started actually doing a muted strum where the miss strums go and that has started to help the feeling of the rhythm being interrupted by the pauses of the miss strums. I also might have to bust open the tab player despite my crushingly impatient and childlike unwillingness to do so. Strumming is my “lima beans” that my parents forced me to eat as a child, except now I’m an adult forcing myself to do it. π π
@johanna2509, very beautifully played! That’s the one I wanted to pick because that’s more what I naturally love to play, flowy and fingerpicky songs, but it’s good to try different things. Beautiful job! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@brettboy, that was amazing! I feel like your enthusiasm is just as impressive as your technical skill playing uke. ππ So funny. I love those kind of puppets, too (NOT the overly human-like ones), but when the first one appeared it legit startled me. Good job! π
