October 8, 2022 at 12:51 am in reply to: Oct 11, 2022 – Live Lesson: 3 Things I Never Thought Iβd be Able to do on Uke #54001
The_Bumble_BardParticipantI really appreciate this topic. Thank you! π
Self-doubt and jealousy can jump up and geetcha (get ya). They get me too often. But I’m seeing that everyone has things they struggle with and things they are great at too. Sometimes it helps to be reminded of that.
3 things I never thought I’d do ‘pon the uke:
1. Play in front of other people.
2. Know any notes on uke. Just know what any of them are at all……..
3. Learn that chord melodies are what I always wanted to play on uke from day one (like the ones on this site), and now I can play them and figure out some of my own (really simple ones).
Thanks again for this topic! Liked reading everyone’s replies! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantSo exciting!! I love the first one with the neato percussive beat!
The_Bumble_BardParticipantAwwwww that’s so dang sweet, gi_gi_ ! I love that. ππ
I think I never would’ve realized just how much of a thing the uke world is without this site. I found a lot of people who played it on YouTube but I didn’t realize how much of a community, a ukeverse, exists. I may never have made such connections to that community without this site.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@jbmills07, “AHA HA HA. Aha.” ππ π
Amadeus is such a good movie. I actually only somewhat recently watched it for the first time, but I’ve always loved Mozart. I used to listen to Mozart on CD’s. π³π And the Beethoven.
Ha, I feel like anyone who performs successfully with a live animal on their head or shoulders should get an extra entry. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@jbmills07, so wonderful! Cat-crimosa or maybe Lacri-meow-sa! (Mozart laugh) ππ
Also, did I get overwhelmed with jealousy that you’re playing that better already with a cat on your shoulders? The answer is yes. ππ
Oh shoot, don’t be a Salieri…
I feel like @Andrew is a fan of that movie and will get those references. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, yes, it’s just so amazing all the things this little uke can do! Wait, should someone make a children’s book about that? ππ
Honestly, that’s a really good idea. I think there’s a sub category on the forum for the lessons and we could totes try to do that. I feel a bit guilty that I can’t seem to find the gumption to face the theory course on my own but I just find it really overwhelming and upsetting for some reason. π I love the video lessons because again “theory in action.” Maybe I just didn’t give it enough of a chance.
That’s exactly what I do, just film on my phone, but I am thinking about trying some others things with that.
And that video of your setup is pretty neat and helpful! π
@mark65536, ha! If you ever make a video like that again I think the high five needs to be included. Or maybe like a cool fist bump. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@sarahmusic, that’s so awesome how much you learned since being here!! Thank you for sharing your experiences!
I grew up playing piano and played into adulthood so I had that musical background but no experience with stringed instruments (the kind you pluck by hand, as opposed to the hammered strings of a pianer). But my problem is that I would play a lot by ear, and after I stopped taking formal piano lessons my discipline for learning theory dropped off a lot. And I’m still bad at learning it… π₯Ίπ
And yes, it’s so cool with each song you learn you get better at all the songs you know and the growth compounds that way!
It’s so fun that you went from no musical experience to already knowing so much! I love to hear about other people’s stories and experiences and often want to go off on these tangents in the Monthly Challenges but I’m already obnoxious enough as it is. π ππ₯Ί Also those threads get so wild just with all the entries and Andrew giving such in depth feedback to everyone which is so informative and fun.
So that’s one thing I love to do, is figure out songs by ear but because my theory game is so weak, I may not be able to transcribe them. I feel like that’s just something that comes with experience as well, by trial and error, playing by ear. Maybe even by picking a song that you love and figuring out the melody one note at a time. If you do that enough and with everything else you learned that will come with time.
Oh neat!! Thank you for sharing that! I’m definitely going to try that because that’s probably in my top three greatest struggles, is being able to visualize the notes on the uke. I mean, there are more than three struggles but you get it… π
Thank you so much for sharing! In your post in the September challenge I lol’ed at your description of your “creeper video” and how it looked like you were being held hostage. π I feel like that could be a plot of a movie with Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes.
Anyway, that’s really all! Thanks for sharing!! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantThat’s so special, @leb397! So excited and happy for you! Congrats! ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipantAlso, I like “TBB.” I kind of regretted changing my name to that but also wanted it to be the same as on YouTube. TBB is good though. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, that’s so good, man! I do love that style of playing, the jazzy improv and layer-building-ness (terminology is a struggle for me). I’m hoping this month I can get myself a looper but I think I need to definitely up my theory game / fretboard knowledge before I can improvise like that.
I’m also really interested in doing some of the things in the lessons when you play two complete “parts” of a complete song, like playing rhythm, harmony, and melody. And put them together in the same video, but I think I need to watch the recording course for that. π
I feel like I know how to play a fair number of things, can slowly figure out most things on my own, and have good intuition with music but really have a hard time with terminology, formal theory, and anything with technology. But you and others here really seem to have a mastery over those things. I guess the benefit of theory knowledge is that you’re not bumbling around as much guessing. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@biancak, same!! It’s actually better than expected which didn’t seem possible. That crescendo though… Good golly! I may never be able to do it justice, but I still want to try shredding those measures like an extra sharp cheddar. (Cancels weekend plans) ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, I loved this! This may be a dumb question but you completely created the back track you’re improvising along with yourself, right?
I like how you played it all out then just sat and grooved to it for a bit when you were done. π
@mark65536, just wanted to say that your September entry was amazing and I love the editing! I was hoping that you’d high five yourself at the end though. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantYes, I think that’s my struggle at times is that I like to ask a lot of questions, and have things explained in a less formal way, like in the video lessons where theory is applied to a song “in action,” or by observing others asking questions on the forum, but yours is a really good strategy. I do know a fair amount of theory things but the biggest challenges are memorizing the notes on the ukulele. I know every one on a piano and a fair number of chords but it’s like I’m trying to reprogram my brain. π π³
What you described in your second paragraph is exactly what I mean! That moment where something just “clicks” is something truly special. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantI’m so excited for this, man! So many great song options, but I’m especially excited for Lacrimosa. That could be a useful song to have “on hand” for every day life. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@leb397, I said “apricots” the first time, but then realized that I find them disgusting. There is a convoluted reason why I think learning tastes like a chocolate covered raisin, but I’ll just say, I love them too! ππ And that was a lovely take!!
Good golly these entries are ridiculous (in a good way). π
