The_Bumble_BardParticipantI misspelled the made up word the second time: * Uke-piphany
π
@surferjay, you’re allowed two or as many as you want, friend! πJust gotta comment…
1. Welp, that’s pretty amazing! I did start that course but got a bit overwhelmed about the memorizing the fretboard part. π³ Did you just keep going forward or did you manage to achieve that feat first?
2. Oh gosh, that’s such a good one!! I think that’s part of why I love this community here is that even if there is a critique needed, it’s coupled with encouragement. It does shatter your confidence if you’re only hearing bad things or if you’re being mostly ignored. I’m a middle child. π
@robinboyd, that is quite amazing! I may have heard that before, but the way you say it, that really makes sense. I feel like I need to ponder upon that one.If we’re talking *before* RC101, then I’d say… That I truly loved playing ukulele as a way to soothe my soul, man. Not even joking. But for me the things I learned here and the connections I’ve made so far, they’ve really changed how I view the ukulele and what’s possible to do with it, and I had lofty ambitions to begin with. π
Thank you for sharing! Our ramble threads continue. πππ
I actually have other uke-piphanies I may share later.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@mkstewart67, same! It’s always so exciting to learn something new, and to learn from everyone else here! Learning is delicious. But now I’m wondering what learning would taste like. Maybe like chocolate covered raisins?

The_Bumble_BardParticipantmkstewart67, that was so lovely and made me smile! And all the entries that came before were incredible! I’m probably not going to have time to learn one of these in time now because I way overestimated my ability to learn the……………… Tremble thing for the Misirou. Also only now are my nails long enough to do it. Excuses, excuses. Oh well, at least I’m slightly better at it now! Still, so much fun to listen to everyone’s entries, there’s just so much to learn! ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipantThis is so precious and adorable! He does such an amazing job! I feel like this little fellow has a bright future already being so talented! Good job, little guy! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantThat is a really good rule! Thankfully I haven’t needed a rule like that because crushing poverty kept me from acting on my uke-buying impulses. π “Food, or ukuleles?” It was sometimes still a hard choice. The most extravagant thing I bought on my own was even before the pandemic, the banjolele.
After watching many of the live lessons on topics like this, I do see the value in upgrading to more quality ukuleles eventually, but I have at least one for now–the one I won from here, lol.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@ccwuke, that was so good! Everyone’s is this month. The performance anxiety is such a struggle, for me it’s a huge hurdle. It is helpful to know that even these great players still struggle with it but just push through.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@robinboyd, that’s pretty adorable! My sister-in-law used to teach and play guitar to accompany singing with her students too.
Ah, that makes sense. Sometimes I want to get another uke for foolish aesthetic reasons but so far I’ve resisted doing that. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@robinboyd, that seems like some pretty sweet swag! Wait, what kind of job can you get that you play ukulele while at work? ……………. π³π
………….Oh yeah, you have to be a crazy good player for that to be a thing, and also often a great teacher.
I’m curious why other people get multiples of the same size ukulele, what your reasons might be?

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@june2020 I pretty much do exactly what Andrew just said to remember the live lesson: Put a reminder on my calendar with a time set with it.
@robinboyd, ha, that all makes sense, I think! Thank you for explaining that. I knew about some of those overlaps but that’s part of why I’m mainly focusing on the uke. I can only comprehend so much at a time. π I feel like if I threw in the guitarlele it would require reprogramming my brain even more.Sigh, stretch chords are a challenge for me. I noticed in the lesson that Matt, seemingly without batting an eye, stretched from fret 2 to 10. I’ll just have to get finger extensions. Then I could also use them for a Halloween costume, because that’s terrifying. π
@surferjay, that’s a pretty dang great collection! I have wanted a rainbow uke for a long time but could not justify it because the main reason I wanted it was, “ohhhh pretty rainbows!” πIs one of the tenors you have an electric uke?
This is my collection:
– My orange Hola! Soprano uke. It’s the cheapest but still pretty much my favorite uke.
– A Donner banjolele
– A Luna concert uke that I got for Christmas last year
– The fight centurion tenor electric ukulele that I won here π
– A child’s guitar that I bought for $15 from a thrift store because I didn’t realize what it was. π
I may get a sopranissimo uke as a Christmas present for myself at some point. My family would get it for me but I’m not sure I could take the joking sarcastic glances. ππ

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, that’s quite a collection! Is the bigger one in the back a guitar? I kind of want to know what they all are. π
@robinboyd, I see what you mean, I think, how the guitarlele could maybe sort of bridge the gap between the uke and guitar. From what I remember, the guitarlele has four of the same strings as a uke plus two lower strings? For me, there are certain songs I get obsessed with and I view the instruments I have (and the ones I want to get) through that filter. Obviously I’m also very intrigued / tempted by the novelty and cuteness of certain instruments and want to get all of them, which is why I don’t often window shop because I’d lose control. π π
After this live lesson though, “confirmed” that I will at some point get a sopranissimo ukulele, maybe very soon, to go with the John King music book I bought. π ππ³π₯Ί I already was eyeing that size uke for its extra small ‘n’ cute factor but now I see there’s a real practical reason, that such great classical players have used it, including some from the site. So then maybe I won’t have to cry as much about struggling to stretch my hands to reach certain chords even on a soprano uke (like for a simple Chopin song I learned). I still will stretch those boundaries because that can be good but I feel like that’s a physical limitation that’s hard to get passed if your hands and/or fingers can’t stretch. Does anyone else here have that problem?
Like a stretch from fret 2 on the C string to fret 8 on the A string?

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@robinboyd, that is really neat!! Well played!
For me the guitarlele seemed like a good idea because I like to play classical music and thought that would lend well to that, but I also do like the ukulele “sound” a lot. The one you have does seem pretty neat though! π
September 16, 2022 at 12:35 pm in reply to: September 13, 2022 β Live Lesson: What Ukulele Can Do That Guitar Canβt #53666
The_Bumble_BardParticipantHahaha oh dear. Someone’s a little confused. π
Did you know there’s a thing called a guitarlele, though? Same size as a uke (I think) but it has six strings. Kinda neat!
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@annemarie, agreed! Quite lovely!
@madz_about_uke, seriously! Too many great songs to learn! It’s awesome you know 8! I only know 5 complete songs but then fractions of others because I keep getting interrupted by myself. ππSeptember 12, 2022 at 7:29 pm in reply to: September 13, 2022 β Live Lesson: What Ukulele Can Do That Guitar Canβt #53635
The_Bumble_BardParticipantI’m so excited for this topic!
I shan’t be able to attend the lesson live, but I do have questions! Probably too many. π₯Ί
* An elitist guitar player might point out the limited range of the uke compared to guitar. How do you address this without getting into a literal instrument sword fight?
* Does it ever make sense (if you really like a guitar arrangement) to try to “transpose” it to uke? Or is it always better to start from scratch and create a new arrangement of that song for uke?
* If a uke player and guitar player fall in love, how much would it be like West Side Story?
I really look forward to watching the lesson back later!
But also, sorry. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantOhhhh, that’s pretty neat! I didn’t realize that was still a thing but I haven’t looked into that in depth because until now I couldn’t afford to replace my keyboard. For me, I’m interested in getting a full keyboard, maybe even 88 keys, so that I can also use it for playing piano as well. Not sure if that makes sense. While that’s awesome it seems more geared toward………. Creating beats?
But now you’ve got me curious to know if I could get a similar program to what I had back in the ’90’s and the double-o single digies (’00’s). That’s what the cool kids say…
There are too many neat things to try and not enough time. π
