ParticipantMy selection is the Romance. I tried to learn it once before on guitar. Before I figured out my hands were too small to play a guitar. Was very happy to see it as one of the choices. I even played it live for a study group that meets at our house without it being too much of a disaster.

Is it my imagination or all the selections for the contests getting a lot harder. I couldn’t even finish one last month.
Here is my latest. It feels pretty glacial compared to everyone else.August 19, 2025 at 9:36 pm #75523rw1950merritt
ParticipantHere’s my first try of Fly Me to the Moon.
I hope to do another a little more up to speed.August 7, 2025 at 6:57 pm #75432rw1950merritt
ParticipantI have a version of Fly Me To The Moon which has been bedeviling me for 2 years since I found it on the internet. That will be my piece for the month.
It has a few challenging chord changes. That will be my project to practice on. Working out the best way to play the initial chord so that I can transition easily into the second.
The moment of truth: Putting up a recording of playing it.

ParticipantAgain, maybe a little too challenging. But I had fun playing it. I had many tracks recorded but this seems to be the best of them.
My new definition of rubato is how long it takes to make the difficult chord changes.

I think I bit off more than I could chew, but here is my submission of summertime.

Here’s my take of Etude 37.
The challenge was to get it up to the written speed. Not quite but I made it to 110.April 30, 2025 at 10:41 pm #73582rw1950merritt

I still can’t believe how hard it is to record something all the way through without a bunch of mistakes.
You all are certainly experts for what you do.March 31, 2025 at 11:48 pm #73365rw1950merritt
ParticipantWell, here is my final submission.
I have the before and after versions linked.
For the second one, I was able to play it from memory instead of from the sheet music.March 15, 2025 at 10:31 pm #66022rw1950merritt
ParticipantSince it was snowing today in sunny California, I think I will revisit O Come All Ye Faithful.
It should be a good challenge for moving up and down the neck and some chord reaches.I should be able to find a before version that I can post with my final version.

ParticipantWell, here it is.
Etude 21 – ArpeggiosTrying to record something all the way through with no mistakes is certainly an unforgiving exercise.

ParticipantI am probably at the slightly-above-a-beginner level of playing. Learning chords and starting to learn finger picking melodies.
execution:
chords and finger picking seem to present lots of long reaches followed by long reaches much farther away. so i hope to work on that.application: learn the finger picking etude #21. i will be going through the basic course and practicing it every day
evaluation: stay tuned for a recording of my playing. hopefully it will be in a steady time and not too horrible!!!!
