diannaParticipantCeltic Etude Mini Lesson. Another opportunity to practice pull-offs and hammer-ons…because it was a mini-lesson it lended itself to looping. I think I did a little better this time…but still tricky…..especially that pull off from high D to B….Eeek! Very catchy tune, I enjoyed it…thank-you!

jody_hendricksonParticipantThis month, I chose ML004, Celtic Etude. I love the tune, which really motivated me to work on getting better at the techniques. I found the left-hand position really challenging, both to keep a relaxed hand with both the index and thumb around the neck, and to achieve clean pull-offs on the E string, especially with the index finger, which felt cramped for space.
Thanks for the fun lessons, Andrew. Even though “mini,” they are “mighty” in terms of getting fun reps on challenging (to me, anyway!) techniques.Best,

Participant@katazumiri kindly listened to my entry and suggested a chord progression that actually works and sounds like real music, as opposed to the simplistic one I put together in a hurry.
So if anyone is interested in the details, I played the riff over A/A/A/D/D/D/A/A.
Katazumiri suggested A/E7/A/D/A/G/A/A. This works much better, particularly the G chord in bar 6 over the out-of-key note. If I had to take a guess I’d call it the secondary subdominant.Anyway, here’s the katazumiri version. Fear not, this time it’s only one style, not a dozen.

ParticipantHello all. Having joined Rockclass about a year ago, and started playing a bit before that, here I am playing Navigating the Fretboard. Any advice, suggestions, recommendations most welcome.

AndrewKeymasterHere’s everyone on page 4 that I hadn’t gotten to.
@misterbones – That was so cool! I love the backing tracks. They add an extra layer of fun!
@gstriph – Excellent playing, Jerry! Rhythm was spot on. Only thing I’d say is try to not staccato the opening notes. Only apply it to the 2 notes that are marked with the staccato dot. To clarify, I’m only talking about the first 4 bars.
@bibilele – Nicely played 👏
@The_Bumble_Bard – LOL the 2nd video made me think of that movie, Inception 😂Great playing in both takes!
@kelsey91 – That was a great take, Kelsey! I’ll be rooting for you to win the uke for your sister 🙂
@ldarrow – Beautifully played and with only one finger! Bravo! I hope your hand heals soon 🙂
@terryfallon3 – Way to go Terry! I thought you did an excellent job getting the pull-offs to ring nicely!For the B Melody, try using your middle finger instead of the ring on that 3rd fret, string 2. It should give you more dexterity playing those phrases.

Here’s everyone on page 5 so far.
@dianna – That was a very good take, Dianna! I thought you did a great job with the pull-offs. I’d suggest slowing the tempo just a touch. It sounds like you’re going at your max speed and I think it would groove more a little slower.
@jody_hendrickson – Beautifully played, Jody! 👏
@lhamilton – Great takes Linda! I heard the swing feel more defined in the opening notes when you went slower. So keep that in mind as you practice at the quicker tempo.
@clempek – Great playing Clem! The only thing I want to hear is more emphasizes with the swing rhythm. Check out this lesson for help with that.
@rgillof – Your fingerpicking is great! And you nailed the swing feel. The only thing I can point out is that you pause in between phrases. For ex, the first pause happened at 10 seconds in your video. That was the end of bar 4, before 1-4 gets repeated.When I taught private lessons for over a decade, I noticed a lot of folks do that. They would nail a phrase (1-4), but did not practice what happens next. So my advice for you is to work on playing through the next part without hesitations.
Practice bar 4 into 1. Then when you are comfortable with that, try 1 – 8. Apply the same principle for any other pause you did later in the tune.

diannaParticipantThank-you Andrew, Interestingly, as I try to slow it down, I end up speeding up towards the end….I guess tempo is my ultimate challenge as I make my way thru these pieces…something to be mindful of….Your critique is spot on and greatly appreciated.

ParticipantHello all !!!!! Very excited to post my attempt of country riff !!!!
Got a chance after such a long time to practice and participate in the monthly challenge !!!!!
Thank you so much Andrew and entire team of rock class 101 for amazing tutorials !!!!!❤😁❤February 22, 2023 at 11:07 am #56399leslieb

I had fun with all of the mini lessons. This was a nice change of pace. While my pace is slow, it is the best I can do accurately. I do know I need to keep working on this and will. The good news is that I am finding it easier to memorize the pieces. With practice, I will eventually be able to play at better than 70%. Thank you for your comments Andrew. I have been practicing the pull on from last month.

The_Bumble_BardParticipantHaha, @Andrew, that movie’s the best, Inception! A uke within a uke. 😂😅 Next challenge my video will be based on Christopher Nolan’s Memento with the tabs tattooed as physical representation of memories. It’s gonna be wild. Thank you by the way! 😊

marlongasParticipantThis month I’ve been able to spend more time on the couple of courses I’m doing (notation and fingerpicking) and less on the challenge. I haven’t understood the part of the video that explains how to put the thumb and I don’t know if I do it well because it’s hard for me to do the pull offs with the index finger because I don’t have enough space. Anyway, here is my challenge of the month; being from the northwest of Spain,it is very likely that I have Celtic roots… and that’s really cool…

katazumiriParticipantThis works much better, particularly the G chord in bar 6 over the out-of-key note.
Well, I’m not sure, but I think we started in A ionian, switched to A mixolydian in bar 6… And if we’re already in A mixolydian, then G chord is perfectly legal 🙂
However, yesterday I just experimented without thinking too much… I hope I’m not wrong 🙂

AndrewKeymaster@malku2603 – That was so good! Bravo 👏
And TY so much for the kind words! We really appreciate it!
@leslieb – The B Melody and the last A Melody flowed super smoothly! It sounds like a little more practice will get everything up to par. You’re super close! And I’m happy to hear the prev feedback was helpful. Keep up the great work, Leslie!
@marlongas – Performance was great! Your thumb placement looks fine. I’m not sure what size that uke is, it looks like a concert? But it’s def easier to use the thumb on tenor or baritone sizes. If you have a larger uke, give it a shot and you’ll feel the diff right away.February 22, 2023 at 11:32 pm #56412
