rickeymikeMemberGreat, Stiny and I love your background. Reminds me of my trip to Scotland. Now I’m wanting to get back to Royal Troon Golf Club.

coffeemugParticipantStiny, should get an award for best visual setting! Looks like a wonderful place to hang out and play the uke. Great performance, too. Safe travels!

stinyukeMemberThank you so much! I head to record it about 100 times because I was nervous of making any mistakes 🙂

Here’s another take of La Gitanita. My first was posted on the 19th. In that one, I was playing with Aquila Red Series strings which I really like. I had been using them for about 8 months, and in a chat with RB Ukulele Vids I mentioned that people apparently either love them because of the tone or hate them because they tend to snap quite easily (usually the C string). Of course … and you can see it coming … I HAD to mention that I had NO PROBLEM with them snapping … and with that tempt of fate my C string snapped the next day while playing. So, in the Ukulele spirit, instead of frowning I took this as an opportunity to try a new set of strings which I had been curious about … the Aquila AGxAQ … which I am playing in this video. They have a pretty cool pale green color, particularly evident in the C string. So I wanted to record them for comparison with the Reds, so here you have it …

becky7777ParticipantAndrew- That was unexpected and very sweet! Thank you! “Hurries up and learns game of thrones…” Kidding! – I can imagine how I’d murder THAT to death 5x over! I did figure out the little 11 note theme HBO plays before all their shows by myself though! LOL! But I’m definitely checking out some features. 🙂
rpina61- I spent a bunch of time swapping between the 2 videos. The green color of the new set is pretty neat. Thank you for posting the comparison videos. Grats again to you and everyone else who got that harmonic to work btw. I still only get the sound of me smacking the neck and the strings just complain a bit noisily after as an afterthought so i’ll stick with my self imposed tricky bit lol. 😉
stinyuke- I agree, you chose a pretty place to record! It is spring where you are I think? Great job on the song too!

rpina61Participantbecky7777,
Glad you enjoyed the video comparison. Which strings do you like better in terms of the sound?
And welcome to the group. Take advantage of your complimentary premium membership to explore the great site that Andrew has put together. In particular, take a look at the “The Definitive Beginner’s Guide To Ukulele”. I spent a good 9 months working my way in detail through the course and repeatedly practicing the numerous lessons before I took on my first monthly challenge. If you stick with it, you’ll find the quality of your playing will improve rapidly. Andrew is a great teacher.
Again, welcome.

mheidenMember@rpina61- regarding strings, I think I like the sound of the “take 2” strings best.
What type of strings did you use in each?November 24, 2018 at 4:04 pm #20482casadot349
MemberVery excited to continue competing in the kanile’a challenge. Thanks! Here’s my submission video

rpina61Participantmheiden,
The first set are Aquila Red Series. I think they are a Nylgut string but infused with copper to increase the density. Increased density means the C string can be thinner. Notice how the diameter of the C string isn’t much different from the others. But, as I mentioned, they do have a tendency to snap easily and have a slightly rough feel to them.
The second set are Aquila AGxAQ strings. They are actually 100% nylon strings, unusual for Aquila whose name brand technology is the high tech Nylgut and variations thereof. They were a joint effort between Aldrine Guerrero and Aquila. Not sure what they’ve done, but they sound much nicer than your basic low end nylon. I’m really liking them the more I play.
My string issues are that Super Nylgut and the like tend to squeak when I fingerpick, and I don’t like the thinness of fluorocarbon. The AGxAQ feel real nice to me and don’t squeak. But strings are a real personal choice. The only way to decide is to try a variety of strings and see which you like best.
Cheers,

kanae926ParticipantHi, all!
I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far. 🙂
Here’s my November entry…it’s not perfect, but I think we can all agree that once you press that record button, there’s always a rogue/missing/muted note or four. LOL. I especially worked on timing as that always seems to be my biggest hurdle. If I didn’t want to botch it up too bad, I had to pace myself and I only got up to about 75% speed using the tab viewer. It kept me steady, but trying to play it any faster made me sloppier. Supposedly, slow and steady wins the race, but when I watched my playback, it seemed a little underwhelming. I’m going to need to learn to put some dynamics into my playing next.

Here my attempt of La Gitanita. I used a Low G electric ukulele, so there is a little of reverb.
In next days I will upload also a video with a high G ukulele. -
