Wow Sara! On day 1, WOW! Way to go! I loved it, you know I’m a big fan of how you reinterpret pieces and I loved your version. I especially like the strumming part, it really adds depth to the arrangement.

What I would suggest to work on is to continue developing the dynamics. I think you could further differentiate sections by focusing on volume control. If you listen to Evan’s take, notice how he switches from subtle to a more intense attack, and later on, to full intensity, before bringing it back down. This helps the piece tell a story, i.e. beg, middle, end.

So try building, climaxing, and diminishing sections. I think that would be the icing on an awesome performance!

    Hey Andrew,

At first, I was skeptical, but now I really like the choice to let us play “La Gitanita” because it is quite simple and, honestly, a bit boring when I heard it the first time. But by playing it myself and watching your tutorial, I realized that it has many different moods, to which you have to adjust individually. So, all in all, it is not that simple anymore but quite interesting and somewhat complex. A nice challenge.

Also, I do have a question: It seems to me that you only play the a-string of the tapped harmonic chord. Well, I could not manage to tap all 4 strings and it feels to me that it just is impossible. So why did you write it down as a chord if only one string is played? And if so, why did you decide to tap it instead of “harmonic plugging” it?

Glad you enjoy the tune, Sudave! In the lesson, I show you how to angle tap across all 4 strings. But as you noticed, the A string’s harmonic rings truest. Feel free to single tap that note, as we do in this lesson.

Thank you for the reply. Since I was not satisfied with the tapped harmonics of my ukulele (or its strings), I tried out some variations and found that you get very clear harmonics if you tap the chord with the side of your thumb. The curvature of the (my) over-extended thumb fits exactly the positioning of the frets in an A chord. And the hardness of the bone helps to give a precise impulse to the string in opposite to the flesh of the index finger that dampenes it.
Now I can practice the piece as usual 😉

    Hi Andrew,

I’m up to bar 46, where you are playing the harmonic on the 12th fret as though it were an artificial harmonic (which makes total sense because you can leave the Fmaj7 intact). My question is about technique. I don’t even remember where I learned it now, but I learned to play artificial harmonics by releasing my index finger from the string while plucking with my ring finger rather than releasing my index finger while plucking with my thumb. I find it gives me a clearer sound, and it’s easier, particularly as I can’t grow my fingernails because I also practice a martial art. (It’s dangerous for myself and my training partners if my nails are long.) Is there a good reason to practice the thumb technique or should I just play it as I have been playing it?

Should be fine, Robin. The important thing here is to create the harmonic with the right hand, not the left.

Well, the song choices for this month are very interesting. Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing some wrist pain on my fretting hand and decided to give myself a break so I won’t be able to practice for some time. Hopefully I’ll still be able to complete this months challenge.

That being said, I would love to play “Moon”, but I don’t have a low G ukulele and tuning my high G string an octave lower probably wouldn’t work, would it? Guess I’ll have to settle with La Gitanita.

Anyway, this is a pretty long post already, but before I end it I’d like to give my thanks to this community. I’m a fairly new member and I don’t even have premium membership (yet), but I still very much appreciate all the work you guys put into this, helping not only beginners, but advanced ukulele players get better at playing their instrument. Not to be too cheesy, but I really feel like home here, seeing all these different people come together to play their ukes. It really is a beautiful site.

    I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER!

Two weeks focused on Moon by Taimane. Trying to emulate Evan’s performance. Sounds easier than it is to actually do… Here is my entry – still haven’t memorized the entire song. I made a transition for each Theme, being the nerd that I am. Hope you like and please provide feedback.

    Hey Andrew,
In my video I have done the 2 bars for the second ending in the song, “La Gitanita”. Did I do those bars right? (I only have a soprano uke, and you said I didn’t have to do the harmonic tap, but I didn’t quite understand what you told me to do.) If you could just please let me know if I did them correctly or not that would be great! Thanks!

Hi Marni, here is a video with some help on bar 2. The rhythm should be: 1 2& 3& 4&.
