@Andrew I wanted to say a big THANK YOU to Andrew and everyone at RC101. I’ve been a member for the last 2 years, and that time has taken me from the complete beginner to owning several ukuleles, and now my first banjo. That being said, it is time for me to say goodbye to RC101 for the time being. I hate to leave, but my interests take me on a different path now. Through my journey with the ukulele, I stumbled upon the clawhammer style of playing (as posted above) and have completely found my match. From clawhammer ukulele, to banjolele, and (just 4 months ago) to my first (of many I hope) 5-string Banjo. So I have decided to cancel my subscription here and continue on my banjo path. But none of this would have ever happened without rc101. This is truly a wonderful site and I still recommend it to anyone I hear is looking to learn ukulele. Thanks all! ~ Holly

Here’s a link to one of my banjo songs that I posted on youtube if you wanted to see…

Way to go everyone! Always love the creativeness from brettboy, and surfnrz you really make me want to give careless whisper a try in the far off future, that was beautiful. And Lyndallk I really love how your take sounded. Again, kudos to all, these were challenging songs for sure. Everyone should pat themselves on the back.

So here it goes for me with People are Strange. This was my second take/recording on it. And I decided to let it be. Maybe I could have done a better recording, or maybe not. I do seem to have a death grip on that wound Low G string, squeak squeak. Sorry. If i concentrated to lift and not squeak I would mess up. Right now all my attention needs to be on the notes. I also had to leave out the open Low G string in the Verse 3 section, as I discussed in another post about how it sounds terrible as my other strings go so sharp playing further up the neck. So it is what it is. I need to try an un-wound log g string on maybe another ukulele sometime. I also notice that I seem to “hang” on the strings a little too much with my fretting hand, and pull down on the strings a bit too much. Hope that isn’t becoming a bad habit. Anyhoo… here’s the link. Not my best, but it’ll do.

    Thanks RC101! ~ Holly

Hey can I jump in here and ask a question too… the G string is giving me trouble as well but in a different manner. I’m playing on a cheap Soprano uke w a wound Low G. During the 3rd verse, when playing the octave up and then plucking the open low G, it sounds awful, mainly because the 3 other strings go way out of tune (sharp) as I move down the neck. Suggestions? Can I play second string 7th fret instead of the open 4th? I could really use a quality pineapple tenor uke for my low G songs. Lol.

Hi everyone, lots of great performances this month again. We have such a committed group, just goes to show how much we are all learning! I am in my 2nd year of playing now and I can’t figure out why I chose Malaguena this month, but I did. It is above my play grade that’s for sure! I can’t tell you how many times I said, “Ug, I will never get that!” or “My fingers can’t move that way.” But none the less I stuck with it and practiced in small chunks. I am actually surprised that I do have it memorized. (I do, even though my fingers don’t know it.) So here is my best attempt after many tries to get something without too many mistakes. I know I can play it a little better, but putting it all together with the camera on makes the nerves really creep in, or maybe it’s me wanting to be perfect. So this is far from perfect, but way further than I thought I would be at the beginning of the month. I will re-visit it in the future for sure! (Oh and please ignore my crazy 15 year old dog who passes by in the background with her diaper on. lol. It sucks getting old!)

Hi All, I’ve been putting this off for too long, so today was recording day! I am playing Loke Lani on a vintage Harmony soprano that belonged to my uncle, I need it to really reach that 5th fret with my pinky lol. I will also take a look at Day-O, I’ve been so inspired by the creative submissions. Good job everyone, we’ve had quite a turnout this month.

So here is my video, be sure to see the picture at the end! ~ Holly

Hi Everyone (I just posted and had to make an edit, and lost the entire post. So here i go again from scratch.)

First let me say that I DO enjoy classical music. Just not so much on Ukulele, it’s not my thing. (Sorry @lyndallk, no offense, ha ;p ) That being said, I was not looking forward to this challenge, and even though Moonlight Sonata was the first classical song I ever fell in love with, I would need months to tackle that challenge. Kudos to those who did! Then it came to Lagrima, I even printed it off and gave the lesson a go, but my fingers lost very quickly to the craziness on even the first page. So I gave up probably before I should have. At any rate, I landed back on Waltz in C. And truth be told, Waltzes are my least favorite of the classical world, so I decided to put a little folksy swing to it. I swung the eighth notes and added some double thumbing to measure 12. (Don’t kill me Andrew! LOL.) But I recorded, and there ya go. I hear now that I cheated the dotted half notes at the end of the phrases some, and the harmonic at the end didn’t quite make it. (I haven’t completed that course as of yet.) So here it goes…

PS> @gstriph – That has been my biggest fear since learning to play the ukulele, it’s all I think about while chopping vegetables now. Like we don’t have enough to worry about already. I wish you a speedy recovery. I hope everyone is staying safe and avoiding covid19 and their cutlery.

Alright so here’s my entry with shortening bread, actually played on my gold tone banjolele. Hope that doesn’t exclude me from possibly winning, LOL. -Holly

Yay! Thanks! And to think i almost didnt make it in time this month. I will have to think about what I would like to work on. 🙂

Thx for the comments Andrew, yes clawhammer has really inspired me. I love the rhythmic sound. And dead buggy, lisa, and Karen- I’m glad you liked it. I would be happy/honored to share the tabs with you.

I’m excited for this month’s challenge for sure! Thx Rc101!

Ok, So I almost didn’t participate in this month’s challenge. I was focusing on clawhammer the last couple of months rather than the usual fingerstyle. But a few days ago I started to tinker around with making a clawhammer song myself, so, here I am last minute putting this up on youtube. I recorded this with only a few takes, and do wish it was a bit cleaner, but that’s one of the beauties of the clawhammer style, as it seems to have a very free/loose feeling (at least in my opinion.) I used my ukulele, instead of the Little Gem Gold Tone banjolele I got for Christmas. I like the soft sound from my uke better, the little gem just isn’t sounding how I want it too at the moment, not sure why really? I need to make some adjustments to it, maybe better strings?? Anyhow, here is my song, and I even created the tab for it in Guitar Pro 7.5 which was fun to do, and made creating the song very easy and fun.

Hi everyone, lots of good submissions already!! And kudos to those of you who can sing too. But that’s not me, so I will give you my go at White Christmas. And I was so touched by what Ukulele Kids Club is doing that it was my joy to donate to them ($40). After spending the last couple of weeks in the hospital with my mom who had major back surgery, I have suffered from Ukulele withdraw, ha ha. So I love the thought of kids getting to enjoy this instrument and add some fun to their time in the hospital. Anyhow, here’s my White Christmas for ya….

@Andrew Thanks for the kind praise, it means so much. I did actually try to accentuate the melody notes so I am glad you noticed. These challenges are such a great tool to keep us moving forward and challenging ourselves. Thanks again to rc101, couldn’t do it without ya, and may have even given up (gasp!). So glad to have all the ‘non-singing’ options here. I can’t wait to see our choices are for december! Until then I am currently trying to learn the clawhammer technique that I stumbled across, wish me luck!
