lbilkieParticipantAlso, I hope this is OK that I posted this here. For anyone interested, I am in the hand bell choir at my church and this was our Christmas concert performance. We played “Do You Hear What I Here” and “Mary Did You Know” starting at 37:43. I’m in the front row, 2nd from the right in red. The audio quality isn’t great. Another challenging musical endeavor!

Earlier this month I had the privilege to see The Nutcracker by NYC Ballet. The performance blew my mind and I knew I had to learn to play “Waltz of the Flowers” in this month’s challenge. I can say it’s probably the most challenging piece in my Ukulele journey. I had a lot of fun learning even though I was not able to pull off some of the transitions correctly and timely. More practice is on the card 🙂 As always, I appreciate any feedback on improvement.
A couple of questions on top of mind:
1. Christopher plays only with his thumb instead of fingers. Is this just a personal preference or is there a tonal aspect in play as well?2. In my performance, I played mainly with fingers except during measures 49 & 50 and Melody D as I think it the tone sounds better. What do you think?

leb397Participant@lbilkie very nice Nutcracker entry and I listened to your Church Bells, love their sound – pretty.
Well everyone is wrapping it up and to those that submitted God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, I completely agree with the struggle – as I mentioned in my entry. It’s a great piece but was a real challenge.
I’ve said it before – This is a supportive site. So many talented entries.
Thank you @Andrew @Matt and @steven any all at RC101. What a great year.Good luck everyone. If you are in US – watch out for this weather!!!!
Happy Holidays

I love this arrangement and it deserves much more practice to smooth out. I used a low G.
Happy Holidays to all at Rockclass101. 🎄⛄️

AndrewKeymaster@sir_anzalot – Beautifully played, Andy! I hope your finger feels better soon 🙂
@lynnzo – That was a great take! You nailed the fun, cheerful vibe! One tip, don’t forget to tune before you record. Your G string was a little off.
@laurakarr12 – Beautifully played, Laura! Well done 👏
@june2020 – Playing sounded great, June! And TY so much for your generous donation 🙂For tips on how to cut down on “choppiness”, check out the video I left for @joannetala’s feedback.
I’m not seeing issues with your transitions fundamentally (i.e. left hand form) speaking. To me, it looks like a little more practice will develop the muscle memory needed to smooth out the changes.
@lbilkie – I thought you did an awesome job! From here, I would practice 4 to 8 bar sections at a time and play along with Steven in the tab player. For example, looping the melody line from bars 5 to 8.And thank you so much for your generous donation! Also, please share your other performance in its own post. It’ll get more views that way 🙂
@janaq1 – Wow! Your performance was stellar! It was beautifully paced and played with expressive feel. Excellent work, Jana 🙂And thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it!
@dermango – Excellent performance! I do have one suggestion. I noticed you played the second tune at a slower tempo than the first. Which is totally cool, but I’d add a ritardando over bars 15 & 16. That should make the transition a little smoother.
@nelsonlin2021 – Wow, Nelson! I’m very impressed that you tackled this tune and played it so beautifully. Well done!Let’s knock out these questions:
1) I’d say it’s personal preference, but it could very much be the other too. I sent him your question. Let’s see what he says. I’ll post his response when I hear back 🙂
2) I like it! The thumb produces a softer, sweeter tone than fingernails. So it’s very fitting in that section.
@ukulelee – I thought you played it beautifully, Leone. Well done!
@lynettejd – Beautiful playing! From here, I would work on boosting tempo. Start slow, maybe 5 or 10 BPM faster and break it into sections.December 22, 2022 at 10:44 pm #55337
camperParticipant@mkstewart67 Some very nice playing there. Although the volume was low, I enjoyed listening to your playing of that tune. Merry Christmas.

The medley turned into two separate recordings. Partially to reduce 4 letter word usage but mostly to get something submitted in time.
Apologies to all the nutcrackers and sugar plum fairies that were injured during the making of these videos.

AndrewKeymaster@cimarronsailor – Playing sounded great! From here, I’d work on boosting tempo and memorizing it. That way you can focus 100% on your playing 🙂
Break it into sections (for ex: 8 bars at a time). That’s always the best way to approach memorizing.

Greetings everybody!
Thank you for organizing this challenge. Great motivation to learn new songs.
Here is my attempt to play “I Have a Little Dreidel”:
The sound comes from a Low G Electric Ukulele and a Fender Amplifier.
Have a great Christmas and a fantastic new year!
