ParticipantHi all! This is my first challenge and I didn’t get as good at this one as I would have liked yet, but I’m out of June so ✌️

I’ve been away a few months and am a little rusty. I was going to do Mad World until I heard AXEL F. Love that Melody. This is with a low G so I had to make a few changes. In a couple of spots I stayed with the low G because I liked the deeper sound.

I decided to give Yellow Submarine a go after my husband shared John Lennon’s demo for the song with me. Despite having the sheet music in front of me, I got lost a few times! But it’s the only take with Verity lending support. 🙂

I chose “What was I made for?” Such a lovely song. Thanks, RC101 team! I still need more practice to come close to doing it justice.

AndrewKeymasterHere’s everyone on page 7 that I hadn’t gotten to.
@bibilele – Beautifully played, Bianca! My only suggestion would be to focus your practice on the phrases where you had a little hesitation.
@frederic – I thought your performance was excellent! Flow sounded great to me, very natural.
@swissconsinboy – Awesome performance, Greg! I noticed a couple of spots with a little stumble, but they sound like a bit more practice would easily fix them. My big suggestion is to try down/up strumming instead of all downs when the chorus comes up. That’ll give it a better timbre.June 30, 2024 at 3:56 pm #62177

leb397Participant@andrew I was so surprised you showed my entry in news letter. Thank you, thank you! I’m looking forward to “original” songs for July. I think it will one of your with low G.
Great entries everyone. So many to comment on. Good luck! Louisa

This month I chose “What Was I Made For” for the RC101-challenge – it is such a beautiful arrangement, and I really loved playing it! ✨
Thanks for listening!

AndrewKeymasterHere’s everyone on page 8.
@jedart – I’m not the biggest fan of the arpeggiated roll in my own playing, probably because I’ve never been great at it lol. That’s why I usually sub it out for the flick/strum technique. That technique adds a bit of color to the chord in a unique way, just like the roll.I think you’ve got a great foundation with this tune, and your fingerpicking sounds great! I’d recommend focusing on one section at a time and perfecting it before moving on to the next, then piecing it all together.
@otzepeng – Fantastic pacing and feel, well done Markus! 🙂
@mmoynihan – Excellent performance! You nailed the feel of the tune, Matt! My only suggestion is to keep your index finger straight when barring the G chord so that your knuckle does not pop out. Check out this lesson for more info on barring technique.
@lynnzo – Very nicely play! Great feel throughout. I would work on increasing the tempo slightly from here.
@hiouke – Great playing! I would recommend practicing with a metronome, there’s a couple spots where timing varied a little. That click will help keep you locked it throughout. But overall, it was a great take! Keep up the good work!
@qiuyan – Excellent performance! 👏
@malku2603 – Sounding awesome, Akansha! Well done!
@jasdel – Performance sounded great! Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s working! And one tip for the camera nerves, start recording your practicing. That’ll get you used to playing in front of the camera and you get the added benefit of getting to review your sessions 🙂
@ramiro – Great performance, Ramiro! Some of the melody notes sounded like they were delayed for a stylistic touch. In my opinion, it would sound better if you keep the tempo steady throughout. But that’s only my opinion, as the performer, you get to decide how you interpret and perform the piece.
@janaq1 – I thought it was awesome! Solid tempo, great rhythmic chops, and you nailed the upbeat feel. Yea, I’d say that was def awesome Jana!
@richard_siegert – Beautifully played, Richard! You have such great finesse in your notes and chords, which gave the piece a wonderful feel. Keep working on memorizing the ending of the chorus, and you’ll be golden!
@rgillof – That was awesome, Richard! Nice groove and great jamming with the bass!June 30, 2024 at 4:23 pm #62182
1481632_mParticipantHere is my submission for “Mad World.” I realized too late in the month that being able to play the song in parts is not the same thing as being able to play the song through in its entirety. The recording is rough, but I did manage to memorize most of the song in the last three days of the month. So now I’m hoping to be able to put the parts together and play them smoothly in the future. It’s hard to play when you know you are recording yourself. Thanks for making the monthly challenges, I’m learning a lot.

AndrewKeymaster@jenividivici – That was a fantastic first post, Amanda! Excellent fingerpicking! Hope to see you in the next challenge. 🙂
@mark1256 – That was awesome, Mark! Keep playing it every time you pick up the uke. It sounds like with a little more practice, you’ll have that riff nailed every time.
@potter – No worries about the form! Your playing was great! I’d suggest tapping your foot along because the opening verse was a bit slower than the rest of the tune when the first chorus started. Tapping will help you stay steady throughout.
@coffeemug – Well played, Mary, and thank you for the kind words. I like your interpretation of this tune. Your pacing was different from Matt’s, and I think the faster phrases you played added a nice feel and emotion to the piece.
@abster – Wow! Way to go Abster! Amazing playing and great job on the timing and groove! Very impressive! 👏
@rafaela – Beautifully played, Rafaela! I really enjoyed listening to your performance. 🙂
@1481632_m – Your performance sounded great Megan! Your fingerpicking was excellent! Working towards playing it as a whole is a great goal, keep up the good work!June 30, 2024 at 5:31 pm #62184

Mad World – I was honestly second guessing my choice for this month’s challenge because it took me so long to get a handle on it. As much as I liked “Yellow Submarine”, I was thinking if I had chosen that one, I probably would have driven both myself and my husband “mad” before the month was out. You know what I mean – Yellow Submarine once in a while is ok, but over and over for a month – haha. At any rate, I know this Mad World can of course be better, but I was pleased I persevered with it. I felt like it was a little beyond me at first.
I’m probably slow to the game on this, but I wanted to pass on a positive observation about the on-screen player that is in RC101 – I think most people know about the ‘loop’ feature. I’ve noticed when you use ‘loop’, you also see a ‘focus’ pop-up with some options. I never bothered with ‘focus’ before because I thought, well – yeah, it’s a loop. But HEY – when you go in ‘focus’ mode, it removes all other measures from the screen. Something about that is mentally encouraging to me because it’s just the tiny section or set of bars you have selected. And you have a sense of accomplishment of completing the entire ‘focus’ bars. (I always felt like when looping, the rest of the song was taunting me because I could always see it looming out there – it was always there. Haha.) Anyway, that was a new website feature I enjoyed this month also.
I enjoyed everyone’s playing – wow some really awesome submissions! You guys are awesome!

ParticipantHi Andrew, Here is my attempt at Yellow Sub. As you will see, I have not yet mastered barre chirds, and even substituted for one of them. Will that disqualify my entry to the Challenge? If so, no worries. I enjoy playing the song. PLUS I can see from the videos that I need to keep my left hand fingers close to the fretboard at all times. Valuable learning all around!
