Wow beautiful playing Planet and Lyndall! I grew up with the reaggae version by UB 40 on the radio and was surprised to hear the the slower original in 12/8. UB40’s version is faster and in 4. Twenty One Pilots has a faster version so does Ed Sheeran. I think I prefer your faster interpretation to be honest Lyndal and Planet’s version is so beautiful and sincere played as well :).

I started practicing for this challenge yesterday evening. I hope to make it in time, quite a busy month here. If not so be it. Nevertheless so nice to hear all your performances !

Have a great practice fellow uke students. 🙂

A love song indeed — Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love is the song that played when my then-boyfriend-now-husband had our first-ever slow dance at the age of 18. I tried to channel my 18-year-old self to add emotion to my playing. 😉

    Lovely music everyone!

Chris – good job. Why can’t I sound like that? HA.

Nat – effortlessly played! Too good.

planetfink – Wow, your playing was simply sublime. Absolutely nailed the feel. What a pleasure to listen to. 🙂

cauer2 – Dang, you killed the strumming section Chris! Great feel, tempo, and I love the strong accents on the melody. Now I do have two minor critiques. If you tap along from the beginning, you’ll notice that you came in just a touch late with the strum section.

Try to tap your foot along as you play, especially in breaks. On the other hand, you aced the timing for the transition from strumming back to fingerpicking.

Lastly, I hear a slight rush in tempo in the final fingerpicking section.

Anyways very minor stuff, and I’m actually super guilty of doing the latter. I think my nerves get the best of me at the end of arrangements.

nthibode – Beautiful rendition, Nathalie! There’s only one thing that stood out to me that I’d like to point out. At 2:43, you tug the D note down. This is commonly referred to as a micro-bend. Which stands for microtonal and usually describes a quarter-step bend. It’s used a lot in blues guitar, and if I remember right, it’s something I talked about in the lesson.

So if you listen to your performance, you did it a couple times before the timestamp above. But that one at the timestamp had the best sound, while the others felt a little too sharp to my ear. So do an A – B comparison and I think you’ll hear the difference. Less is more with those type of bends, so always go for a subtle pull down, which is exactly how you did the last one.

I noticed the increased tempo myself when I watched it back. I think I was just worried that I would lose the chords at the end and just sort of rushed through. I did not spend as much time practicing this piece as I do in last month’s challenge; we have 5 little 8-2 and they are a handful. I will say that tapping with my feet has never been a strong point of mine. I had thought to get a metronome at some point, but I do know I am very weak in this area. Good things for me to focus on. Thank you for the critique. I know I’ve read other members comments on rock class 101 but I jyst wanted to echo those here. I think this is a great resource. I am learning a lot, and whenever I want to find something specific there is a lesson, course, or a song that will touch on, if not go deeply into the subject. Really great medium with excellent content. 👍👍👍👍👍. Thanks again Andrew and team.

Thanks Andrew! I can’t remember if you mentioned the micro-bend in the lesson, I just noticed it while listening to AJ’s rendition so I tried to mimic it (his is quite sharp is it not?). I will practice more subtlety, thanks!

Thanks @Jinajupiter. Had a little listen to the covers that you mentioned. Such a good song, and so many versions. Really liked your post, Natalie, and may well incorporate that little bend into mine. I’m thinking of playing it this month at uke club. PS it is my partner’s favourite song!

Awesome @lyndallk! I do like the addition of the bend; I say go for it!

Thanks Andrew. That song is a real emotional one for me. I’m glad it came through in my playing.

@nthibode – Good job! I was hearing what AJ was doing as vibrato, which on my fingers turns more into a weak mess.

Learned about the term “micro bends” from your feedback. Bouns. 👍 TY Andrew.

Still haven’t been able to memorize this arrangement.
