    Aloha,

I have taken lessons in person for a year and the focus was pure theory – 12 months in the only song I know is “I lava you” which is 3 chords that I hear the guests at our resort being taught. We have covered music theory, strumming, fingerpicking, hammer on and offs and more.
I enjoyed it for a while but have become frustrated and want to learn songs. Should I sit down and pick a tutorial song and just go for it? In some ways that feels like moving backwards.
So is that the best way to go about it or is there a better way to merge the pure theory with application – meaning learning some cool grooves.

What is the biggest piece of advice you can give to ukulele beginners, in terms of both motivation and technique? I’m looking for ways to stay out of a slump, and any technique I might be missing out on understanding as a beginner. Thank you so much, I love the site!

    Hi Andrew/Mike
I bought a not too expensive tenor ukulele some time ago which sounds terrible. I have been told that it may need the “action” looked at. My question is, am I able to rectify this problem myself or do I need to take it to a luthier, remembering that it was an inexpensive, but not cheap ukulele.
    Thanks

Is there an easy way for a non musically educated person to transcribe a melody? I have a ditty in my head I’d love to be able to play on the uke. Is there maybe an app you could sing into and have it tell you approx what the notes are, which you could then find on the uke?

    Thanks!

I am a beginner. I am struggling with the proper form. I was told the left hand needs to be relaxed, thumb on center back of neck and like curled fingers (and yes I have been exercising my hand). I understand that, but then I cannot put enough pressure on the strings to not make them buzz or get a dead note (and I definitely can’t barre at all). What am I missing here?

I have tried to break out of the intermediate level several times, but keep stalling. Can’t seem to break the barrier. What do you suggest to move on to the next level?

I recently bought a baritone ukulele and was wondering if I can use the same techniques and theories used on a normal ukulele(gcea tuning) for example like the scale patterns, minor and major pentatonics etc

What would you say is the most difficult thing when beginning to learn the ukulele?

In what conditions is a humidifier necessary? I have read conflicting recomendations – some saying they are only needed in extremely dry climates, and others saying that any house running air conditioning is too dry. How can I be sure a solid wood uke won’t crack due to drying?
    Thanks!

What’s the most useful/versatile strum? Are there any particular ones that you think everyone should know?
