AndrewKeymasterInteresting, because that’s what’s required to produce pinch harmonics on guitar. A very 80’s technique, a la Zakk Wylde. It’s hard for me to offer any advice without being able to see your playing. Feel free to post a video and I’ll be happy to see if I can help 🙂

AndrewKeymasterHi Kay, you mentioned not knowing how to add vibrato to chords. So, I’ll be planning to release a vibrato lesson soon. There’s a lot of interest in this technique, so it’ll be great to cover it as it relates to single notes and chords, as well as, a general overview of what it is in musical terms.
AndrewKeymasterI’m planning to make a proper lesson on it, but in the meantime here is a video to help you out. Keep in mind that vibrato requires you to keep finger pressure held down on the note and apply subtle up/down movement to create a nice sustaining tone.

AndrewKeymasterHi mayaqatsi, great plan! Check out this lesson for tips on memorizing notes on the fretboard and this lesson for the 5 major scale positions. I’d recommend to call out note names and scale values as you work through the latter lesson.

Perfect playing Kay! 🙂
AndrewKeymasterThat’s awesome Lisa!
AndrewKeymasterWelcome Marius! Glad to hear you’re having fun 🙂 Let me know if you need any help.
Cheers,
Andrew
AndrewKeymasterHi Charlene, I went ahead and merged this post with the other. Great playing! The issue you have with the Taps is the same as Dennis in that you are lingering. The tap needs to be quick, light, and precise. Watch the 2 videos above as that advice will help you correct your execution of the technique. Let me know how it goes 🙂
AndrewKeymasterHi Charlene, it looks like the video you tried to upload is too big. Please upload it to YouTube and I’ll be happy to take a look at it. In the meantime, this question comes up quite a bit and I’ve addressed it in this forum post. Perhaps this will give you some more insight and help.
January 6, 2018 at 1:00 pm in reply to: 2017 Member Feedback – Your Suggestions for Next Year's Lessons #15145
AndrewKeymasterThanks for the feedback Tony! We definitely don’t do too many vocal lessons and the main reason is because I don’t sing. But, I think the approach moving forward would be to do things along the lines like you listed. There are so many lessons online for singing, yet they are mainly simple strum patterns. I’d rather focus on creating lessons that show you how to play more intricately by weaving harmonies, melodies, and solos over vocals.

AndrewKeymasterIt’s awesome to see so many people excited for this month’s challenge!

Totally fine Robin! Looking forward to hearing it 🙂

Sounds great Lyndall! I think your overall goal should be to play it on top of the backing track. That would be really cool.

Great playing James! Clean and in time, keep up the good work!
AndrewKeymasterThank you! Glad you enjoy it 🙂
January 3, 2018 at 10:58 pm in reply to: How to keep the Ukulele steady when changing chords? #15107
AndrewKeymasterGlad they were helpful Tony! Let’s knock out these questions.
1) I don’t really have any advice. To be honest, I really dislike playing standing up. I find it too hard to do unless you use a strap.
2) Do you mind posting a video? I’ll be better able to help if I can see what’s happening.
AndrewKeymasterWow Tony, that’s awesome that you have found a passion for uke! I too began on guitar, but have equally enjoyed playing this awesome instrument. I’m glad you found us and hope you join one of our monthly challenges. It’s a great way to keep motivated and have fun 🙂
AndrewKeymasterThat’s been on my to-do list for awhile. There are so many on that list 🙂
January 1, 2018 at 1:13 pm in reply to: Participate in the December 2017 Member Challenge For Charity – Holiday Themed #15095
AndrewKeymasterWow Chip! That is so very kind of you 🙂 As I had already factored in part of Rickey’s and my donation, the total amount we raised was slightly less than the figure you listed above.
Together we raised $737 for The Ukulele Kids Club. This was enough to purchase 18 ukuleles for the kids! Truly amazing! Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

I also want to say a big thanks to all who participated this month. Overall we had 22 members participate! I enjoyed watching everyone’s performances. So, without further ado here is the winner of this month challenge:

Congrats! Please send me an email with five songs you would like me to arrange and I will pick the one that I think I could do the best 🙂
I’ve also left feedback below for those of you who I haven’t yet. Don’t forget to check out our January challenge. January’s theme is a fun one, you get to choose what you want to work on! Here is the link for the challenge: https://rockclass101.com/january-2018-challenge.

surfpimp9er – excellent playing and feel! Great performance, keep up the good work!
ukuleleloo – sounds great! The only suggestion I have is to pluck the double 5 once more before it slides up to 6. I hope we get to hear the rest of the tune this December 🙂
mayaqatsi – thank you so much for donating! And I’m glad you joined one of our challenges 🙂 honestly, I thought you did a superb job! I can tell that you have been playing for awhile. I liked how when you went up to the higher voiced G chord, you changed the dynamic to be more subtle. It really emphasizes the louder section that happens after that. Very tasteful.
Since your camera recording distorted, it’s harder to tell if some parts were played too loud or if it’s just the recording. I’m thinking it’s just the recording, because nothing in your hands signals overly harsh hits. Your attack on the tapped harmonic looked fine to me. Sometimes it may just be the uke. Have you tried it on a different uke with more success?
Deb – mission accomplished, you definitely had fun! That was awesome! You know that version was inspired by Brian Setzer. I’m a huge Stray Cats fan and every year he goes on a holiday tour. Definitely recommend it if you’re into his music 🙂
