Like others I was also cruising through until I hit the Chunking Etude and I still need to work on it some more… so I have two videos!
For the challenge, I just stuck to the Strumming the Blues lesson because I enjoy playing it.
And to hold myself accountable and just show my current progress I also recorded where I am with the Chunking Etude right now as well. I’m actually incredibly happy with this recording for where I am but I’m still pretty inconsistent with this piece so it definitely needs more work.

Thanks for the fast response Andrew! Sounds totally reasonable that I was misdiagnosing.
I try to practice with a metronome or the Tab Viewer, but I can definitely do that more consistently. And also slow down to a speed where I can keep that section really on time before speeding up.
Perhaps related, I am also not very good at playing and listening at the same time while I’m actively thinking about the chord changes and strumming pattern. Lol. So I’ll also work on consciously listening a bit more as part of my practice routine, and reviewing my recordings (I take a lot of audio recordings but don’t always listen to them…).

@mickan88 Yes! That measure 4 (and again 8)! I had to slow down so much I couldn’t really feel the tune anymore (I think I took it down to 45 bpm) but that helped me figure out the mechanics of how I had to move my fretting hand. And building up speed slowly I now I think I’m okay-ish on the A melody (still slow though). Today, I started looking ahead to the B melody, and measures 11-12 are also a doozy and I was back at 40-45 bpm again just counting and repeating. I’m hopeful though!

Lovely entries so far! @mickan88 that fingerpicking etude is very beautiful and was lovely to listen to your entry. And @planetfink well done, you’re inspiring me to keep at it!
The Beginner Song 4, the Chunking Etude, will be my song this month. It’s pretty and, I could use a nice go to chunking song, and the chord changes mid-measure are really throwing me off so I’m learning to slow down and work measure-by-measure. With another 2 weeks I’m confident I’ll be able to get through the whole piece. 🙂

Here where I am currently with La Vie En Rose. Definitely needs some more work, but this is the best I’ve got for many takes. And my little pinky pinky is flying all over the place… I need to work on that in addition to all the other stuff, LOL! I love this song so I’ll definitely keep working on it. 🙂

I have been waffling and I am nervous about La Vie En Rose but I just love that song. A version of that song, a simple chord strumming version, has been one of my go-tos for a while to just play around with, so learning a chord melody version would be great. It won’t be perfect, but reading @misterbones’ comment about trying songs that feel a little beyond current ability is what I needed to see to make a decision and just go for it. I’m putting it out here now to work on La Vie En Rose this month to hold myself accountable and we’ll see how far I can get!

I have tried playing at 85 bpm and higher but that’s where I start to fumble. Maybe I need to keeping moving just section by section as I speed it up instead of putting the whole song together faster…
Hi all,
I’ve been working on “Tonight You Belong to Me” this month. Still trying to smooth it over, but my fingernails keep breaking this month (both my index and thumb nails) and I’d like to think it’s really challenging my consistency but reality is it’s probably distracting me more than anything else. Here is where I am currently; not quiet up to speed but getting there and not quiet able to hit or hold all the notes as I would like.

Morning all!
I’ve been trying to clean up the One Finger Etude so here is an update. I’m still struggling with the double pull-off, and consistent volume withe triplet strum. And a little with anchoring to keep a good hold of my uke as I move up and down the neck (lol). But I think this song is just so pretty.
Really nice to listen to the other submissions too. You all are inspiring me to keep at it.

Really great to see the videos folks have shared so far! I also love the Skye Boat Song but I’m a little nervous about some of the chords so I worked on One Finger Etude, which is absolutely lovely to play. It’s not perfect here, but I’ve recorded so many videos because I didn’t like the faces I was making while concentrating on playing and this was the best take (LOL… where is the tutorial to work on less awkward faces in your videos while your concentrating and listening??).
It’s still early in the month so I will likely clean it up more, or I might my try hand with the Skye Boat Song too…

Here is my submission for this month. I worked on Matt’s beautiful Winter Glass and I’m sure I will keep practicing it. I haven’t played much since January, but I don’t want to let a little time away stop me and it was so encouraging to listen to everyone else’s submissions!
Hi all and Happy New Year!
I had to think about the details a bit, but really I want to work on my finger picking so here it goes:
1) Execution – I want to work on finger picking, specifically getting away from just using my thumb for all finger picking (so far I’ve let myself be a little lazy with this).
2) Application – I thought about this a lot last month because I wanted to play Away in a Manger but didn’t discipline myself to move away from thumb picking and then I came across that course on Fingerpicking Concepts, which seems like a great place to start. I’ll work through some of those lessons and pick a song by next week to focus on for the month… there is a section of Zombie by the Cranberries I can kinda stumble through thumb picking, but it feels a bit too advanced for me just yet. (But future me will enjoy it!)
3) Evaluation – I will record practices with my song each week to see how I’m progressing with expanding beyond my thumb picking and plan to share back one each week that I’m not entirely mortified with.
