lakeside339ParticipantAndrew – thanks so much for the feedback. I did not think I’d be able to memorize it but much to my surprise I did without even trying (just the practicing I guess). As you pointed out, memorizing really helps – I had a LOT more pauses when I was trying to play while reading. I did practice one section at a time, but eventually ran out of time. But a big step forward for me. Your feedback to other people has been helpful.
Two things I also found helpful: 1) playing with the chords only to help my brain know where I was going next (rather than just thinking about the tab fingering) 2) a recommendation from Daniel Ward – learn the piece backwards. In other words, do the small sections at the back of the piece first (or at least early on -I found I need to get through the lesson forward first). That way as you are learning your next section, you continue to play into a part you already know more smoothly.
Will have less time to learn the longer (When I’m 64) song this month, but will give it a go…. the motivation of the challenges is very helpful…May 1, 2019 at 10:30 pm in reply to: Participate in the April 2019 Member Challenge – WIN a Kanile’a Tenor Uke! #27025

lakeside339ParticipantI second the devices, apps, etc! I tried voice memos and music memos on both my ipad and iphone – sounded awful! (I ended up recording a black video but you can’t post just the sound to soundcloud – wrong format. So it went to youtube and then here.

lakeside339Participantbecky7777 – soundcloud tells you the formats (including the ones you mentioned). But I don’t know how to record something in those formats. What app or software do you use?

lakeside339Participantbecky777 – do you use soundcloud? I am wondering what people use to record for soundcloud to get the correct format.

lakeside339ParticipantWell, best I could do with my beginner, tiny, weak hands, despite practicing all month.
Cons: plenty of missed chords, notes and the timing is off.
Pros: I am slowly getting better at bar chords, first full fingerpicking song, I picked up some tips from Andrew’s feedback (like left hand muting to make note transitions – measure 7 – sound better) and I got to listen to a lot of great submissions.
I am hoping that next months challenge gives a choice of a more beginner type song, but this did push a lot of people. Thanks Andrew and Matt!I am a Premium Member

lakeside339Participant@soraya06 – if the music store even works on any string instruments (guitar) I’d think they might be able to lower the action. I’m discovering a good setup on a uke makes a big difference on how hard or easy it is to play. Personally, I’ve decided I will now only buy future ukes online from a dealer who does a full set up before they ship it (like Uke Republic). They won’t in my local shops.

lakeside339ParticipantBecky7777 – on any of Andrew’s videos: Hit play, then look in the lower right hand corner. Hover your cursor over where it says ‘YouTube’ – you’ll see it then pops up with ‘watch on YouTune (so you know you’re in the right place. Just click on the ‘YouTube’and it will open a new window on YouTube and continue the viseo there. You can then either save to any playlist you may have created, want to create or the ‘watch later’ playlist YouTube has. those options depend on you being logged in to YouTube.

lakeside339ParticipantBrenna – great!
This will be my first full fingerpicking tune and I still struggle with barre chords, so this will indeed be a challenge! But I am determined to submit entries each of the three months – a higher quality uke would definitely make barre chords easier!! (and this Kanile’a is a beauty)
