ramiroParticipantThank you so much Andrew!
ramiroParticipantHey Sammy, nice to see that you teach here now. The arrangement sounds lovely.

ramiroParticipantI picked The Walking Dead theme song for the October 2024 member challenge. Like with Für Elise I made an effort to learn the song by ear from Andrew’s performance at the beginning of the tutorial. The slow down feature on YouTube is a very helpful tool for that. I learned it on a low G ukulele, hence the different fingering for the 3rd chord. The different picking patterns are quite a brain teaser. Good challenge, thank you for the lesson!

ramiroParticipantI picked Für Elise as the song to learn for the February 2024 Rock Class member challenge. I learned a simpler arrangement in 2022 but didn’t continue to play it. Still, I wanted to make it more challenging and decided to learn it by ear and only watching the performance at the beginning of Andrew’s tutorial, not the tutorial itself. I listened to the performance often and used the indispensable slow down feature on YouTube a lot.
I’m aware of two notes that I played wrong in my recording and may play some notes on different strings than Andrew. Although, it can be quite tedious to learn by ear, it’s a great way to better connect with the instrument. Still, I think that tabs and notation are great tools and am grateful for the many fantastic tutorials that help learning the ukulele.

ramiroParticipantHi everyone! I picked Study in B Minor by Fernando Sor for this month’s challenge. I followed Steven’s suggestions for how to fret the chords for the most part but my picking hand kind of decided on its own to pick with 3 instead of 4 fingers.

ramiroParticipantLooks gorgeous, congratulations!
ramiroParticipantYou’re not alone. I try to keep a repertoire of songs by playing them regularly. This way I can more or less keep them in memory, but for a performance, I would need to practice them more often again. I started to do more ear training lately and find that it helps with playing songs that I haven’t in a while because it gets easier to “translate” sounds in my head to where to put my fingers on the fretboard, if that makes sense.

ramiroParticipantThank you for the kind words and for the tip to add dynamics Stephen! That’s is certainly an area of playing I haven’t explored much yet.

ramiroParticipantMy entry for this month’s challenge is my play through of Matt’s Dream a Little Dream of Me arrangement. I learned it back in 2019 for the first time but haven’t played it in 2.5 years until I started re-learning it this month. Sadly, I have no recording from 2019 to compare it with. I kind of feel that I don’t play it much better. To be fair to myself I haven’t put in as much practice as I did then. I could definitely memorize it way more easily and quickly and am happy about the progress I made in that area.
