ripleyParticipantThanks for your reply. I do have a fair understanding of the notation and read bars 11 & 12 as you’ve written them out in your reply. I was just doubting my newbie, self-taught music reading skills since the tab differs from the verbal instruction.
I appreciate the clarification.
ripleyParticipantHi @greatdave90 π
If you click on the three dots at the bottom of the tab player and then choose ‘settings’ there is a tick box option for adding a count-in. Hope that helps!September 7, 2019 at 2:12 pm in reply to: Participate in the September 2019 Member Challenge β Next Level Strumming! #30264
ripleyParticipantThanks @andrew π I’m going to start working through the strumming technique course now.
ripleyParticipantLike it @tastyshrimp π
It reminds me of the soundtracks to Studio Ghibli movies!September 5, 2019 at 7:09 am in reply to: Participate in the September 2019 Member Challenge β Next Level Strumming! #30221
ripleyParticipantHere’s my drum-like percussion entry. The sound quality on my phone isn’t great – I am hitting the saddle with my thumb knuckle (honest!) but it hasn’t recorded as clearly as it sounds in person.
This technique is a lot of fun to play πI am a premium member

ripleyParticipantWow @tastyshrimp – that nail scratch sounds amazing! I love how easily the ukulele lends itself to different musical styles and techniques π
I haven’t had time today to test keeping my hand still but I figure that, if I can’t get the sound I want from keeping my hand in the same position, I’ll just have to move it a bit!
We all have different ukuleles and different hand sizes so a little flexibility in interpreting this percussive technique is probably necessary. In the Two Thumbs video I shared he was moving his hand loads to strum more fully.September 3, 2019 at 8:52 am in reply to: Participate in the September 2019 Member Challenge β Next Level Strumming! #30187
ripleyParticipantI’m very excited about the percussive drum-beat challenge. I’ve previously had a go at this using the Ten Thumbs Youtube video which I found after watching the amazing Billie Jean cover by James Hill
I’ve made a start on the piece and I think it’s going pretty well. Whether I can do it in front of the camera or not is another matter entirely of course π
I noticed I was moving my right (strumming) hand a lot to move from the thumb-hit to the up-strum, aiming to strum close to my regular position nearer the fretboard. However, having watched the video again I notice that Andrew is strumming very close to the bridge (with the exception of the intro), keeping his hand pretty still, so I’m going to work on that aspect now.September 1, 2019 at 1:21 pm in reply to: Participate in the August 2019 Member Challenge β World Music Themed! #30087

ripleyParticipantThanks @apblondie π
It’s frustrating as I have played it a lot better but I guess part of improving is being able to give a consistently good performance so that’s something (another thing lol!) for me to work towards!August 31, 2019 at 2:45 pm in reply to: Participate in the August 2019 Member Challenge β World Music Themed! #30057

Ok, I can’t put it off any more. After spending far too long trying to get a good take of La Gitanita today I’m going with one I did last week which I’m not especially happy with but could be worse. I really needed to spend more time memorising the song so I could look at my fingers occasionally without faltering.
Despite being a bit disappointed with the submission I’ve really enjoyed working on the song. My first time using picardo and rasgueado plus easily the most complex and speedy finger-picking I’ve attempted π-

ripleyParticipantI wanted to learn Kemp’s Jig but don’t have a low G π
Maybe that’s cause to buy another ukulele π
So, La Gitanita it is. I thought it would be too hard with the alternating picking and rasgueado strumming but I’m taking it bit by bit and I’m not mangling it too much though my picado keeps slipping lol!

ripleyParticipantHi @kelsey91,
You could always try the Uke Leash. You attach it to the headstock then the other end goes either around your shoulder or can even be anchored to a belt.
I also saw a strap DIY video by Bernadette on YouTube where she used those sticky hooks (command strips, I think they are called – theyβre usually used for hanging pictures) in place of strap buttons which she seemed pretty pleased with. -
