so here is my first recorded practice. It is not the actual first day of sitting down and trying to learn the song. The timing is way off but I’m still working on having my fingers in the correct places. I am doing slightly different fingering than the original lesson. I’m staying in the barre form from measure 2 through 5. I can feel the strain in trying to hold that form so hopefully that practice adds strength. The timing on measure 12 really gives me trouble even when I’m counting it out loud. The pull off in measure 13 is weak on the open A but I think that will sound better with more speed….and yeh, I need a lot of speed.
so that is my first self critic..obviously I have a lot of work to do.
What I hope to accomplish this week..smoothing the jump between measure 1 and 2 where it initially goes into a barre chord through repetition. (hopefully my timing will improve with the same repetition) and learning the next three measures (up to the chorus) I think those three bars will take the week, they are proving tricky with the bit of picking I’ve tried so far.. so I want to give them a lot of attention.September 2, 2017 at 9:13 pm #13358carrieParticipantokay, my challenge to myself is dual. I’m trying to learn Hallelujah. (I really love your uke arrangement.) My focus is to improve shifting from chords to barre chords smoothly. The arrangement also works up the neck, which I really need practice with moving smoothly.
Execution: moving smoothing through barre chords and shifting up the fret board. My current level of playing: I feel I hesitate and lose the rhythm and feel of the music when I fumble to move up the uke. I can make my way, haltingly, through the first fourteen bars of the piece but I don’t really know the music beyond that.
Application: learning the chords through the pre-chorus and practicing shifting between them to move more smoothly and gain finger strength so the notes ring instead of thud. My day to day practice will be working through those chords.
Evaluation: I’ll try and post a video shortly of my current ability on this piece and update it at the end of the week and then at the end of the month. I will add weekly comments on trouble or success (hopefully more of the later!)

August 4, 2017 at 8:25 pm #13103carrieParticipantWould less tension in a string be a sign of needing new strings?
Would a shifting pitch…like wavering between a F -F#-F (when the problem isn’t plucking too hard?) I’m asking for a friend. 😛-carrie

June 29, 2017 at 7:03 pm #12545carrieParticipantHi Everyone. This seemed to be the month for hurting our fingers and hands. I did the same! Note to self, do not help the cat. The cat will be fine no matter how stuck he thinks he is! This is my take on SponXe Bob…trust me, there is a reason I call it SponXe Bob…see if you can guess! I think with even a few more days, I will have this down to play for friends. Unfortunately, I am heading to the airport right after this so…like many others have said…Looks like this is it. I obviously stumbled but I am proud that I mostly recovered…though I wouldn’t use the word discrete to describe that recovery but well?? It caught the spirit of this challenge. Lots of fun! Thanks RockClass, Andrew, and Uke Republic for this great challenge and prize!
June 7, 2017 at 9:52 pm #11981carrieParticipantHi there, lots of great questions and lots on strings! I’m going to add to the string questions…perhaps we will end up with enough questions about strings to make it a string themed vid. I am fortunate to have two concert ukulele right now (side note question…ukulele or ukuleles for the plural?! :P) and I’ve found some interesting songs for low G strung ukes. However, all the low G strings I’ve seen are wrapped. So my question is:
Does having a single wrapped G string stand out like a sore thumb with a different tone: is it better to go with a full wrapped set or does the wrapped lower G add a more bass feel? Thanks in advance! Hope you are doing well…and wow, a lot of questions! You are going to have enough material for several lightning rounds, I think!

June 2, 2017 at 11:59 pm #11892carrieParticipantCongratulations Cindy Le! And great job everyone. I enjoyed listening to your music. Cindy, like Lisa said, I hope you will record something and post it with your new ukulele!

May 31, 2017 at 10:11 pm #11822carrieParticipantGreat challenge, Andrew and thanks Uke Republic. I have to say that the last challenge really made me focus and polish a song and I’m pretty excited at how far that focus was able to take me. I really am looking forward to pushing that again.
Andrew, take care of yourself. I hope the PT helps you overcome what is ailing you. Looking forward to all the new stuff when you are feeling better.

May 31, 2017 at 9:59 pm #11821carrieParticipantHey Walter, I enjoyed your take on Ode to Joy with a low G. Thanks for explaining how you made the changes. It sounded great.

May 23, 2017 at 3:07 am #11674carrieParticipantHi there, here is my entry with Ode to Joy. I am still pretty new to uke. I think I am getting a little ahead of the beat and rushed so I am still working on that with a metronome. Unfortunately, I am going to be very busy over the next week and didn’t want to miss getting a recording up so I just went for it. If I can manage to squeeze in a bit more time, I’ll try to post another. Also, I have to say I have no idea why my right pinkie ended up like that…I normally don’t play that way but with this song it seems to want to anchor my hand. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
January 20, 2017 at 2:40 am #9972carrieParticipantI am sorry I am late to responding to this. I actually listened to it right away but then had a family emergency. In the midst of the grief of that, I completely forgot that I hadn’t actually responded.
You should be happy with that one. That’s pretty good stuff there. The two things that stood out to me were your rhythm and your dynamic. I don’t know if you were thinking about it but you played the melody voice just a touch louder to great effect.
November 29, 2016 at 11:05 pm #8992carrieParticipantOriginally found your Youtube channel about a year ago when I first bought a uke. I’ve been practicing and a full membership is now on my Christmas list.
November 29, 2016 at 11:01 pm #8991carrieParticipantI don’t know but I’m following to see what advice you get. 🙂
November 29, 2016 at 3:38 pm #8983carrieParticipantthat was beautiful! I thought that was absolutely lovely. We are always our own worst critics, aren’t we? It drives us to improve but to be technically perfect isn’t always the best outcome. Play first and foremost for yourself. Do you have any other songs posted?
