AndrewKeymasterGreat job on both songs Sam! My only suggestion for you, is to go back on Aura Lee and practice either with a metronome or with the on-screen tab viewer to tighten up on the timing a little bit. You can also tap along and count while you play, that’s a great way to work on timing too. Awesome job overall, love seeing you guys participate every month ๐
Wow, you got that down fast Chip! I think we got it right, this was a great one for you to work on. My advice for you is similar to the advice I left for Sam above. First, if we compare how you played the riff versus the chords, your timing on the chords was great. The riff was a little jerky, and this comes down to it being harder to play than the chord section. So I would suggest to break it down and just work on bar 1 and 2, loop that and play along to a metronome or the tab viewer. Then work on bar 3 and 4 in the same manner, then try to tackle the entire riff. Let me know how it goes, but you did very well on this. Keep up the good work!
Hi Lisa, I think you meant the 4th string. It’s a little awkward at first to get this playing approach down. It sounds like you just need to work on the grip adjustment, which takes time. It’s similar to when you first learn how to fret chords, it takes a while to get the muscle memory down, learning how much strength do you need to apply to make the note(s) ring out, and how to position the fingers so they do not block other strings, etc. Keep at it and let me know how it goes.

AndrewKeymasterWow Tessie, that was amazing! You are rocking and rolling ๐ One thing I’d like to point out, is how she uses her thumb to mute the 4th string when strumming. This is a great approach for when you only want the bottom three strings to ring out. I’d recommend everyone working on this song to try it out.
To answer your question James, I played it wrong ๐ This happens sometimes, as hard as I try to play it as notated, I’ll end up playing a section slightly different. That’s why you’ll see a difference in the printed Tab versus the play along Tab. But, either way works!
AndrewKeymasterThanks Will, I’m glad you are enjoying the course! It is vital to understand module 1 before moving on to module 2 and 3. An understanding of the theory taught in module 1 will be required to comprehend the lessons taught in module 2 and 3. To answer your question about memorizing the fretboard, that is something that will take time. A complete memorization is not required for moving forward throughout the course. I would recommend to print out the fretboard diagram showing the notes as you can reference this throughout the course.
If you have any questions on the material don’t hesitate to ask. I’m happy to help ๐
Cheers,
Andrew

AndrewKeymasterChip – Phil gave great advice for you. Often times I see beginners try to tackle too much too soon, and really the trick is to break it down into sections. I’d like to challenge you with this advice. “Our First Song” is a much easier piece, I’d like to see you submit it for this month’s challenge. But, approach learning and practicing by breaking it into sections.
So for example the Riff is 4 bars in length and each bar contains the same rhythm: Eighth notes. Practice one bar at a time, when you can play it cleanly and perfectly in time, try the second bar. When you can do that cleanly and perfectly in time, try bars 1 through 2. When you can do that cleanly and perfectly in time, do bar 3 , then 4, then 3-4, then 1-4.
Continue throughout the rest of the piece with the same approach. With all that said, you’re doing a great job, keep it up ๐
Connie – great job! Here’s a quick video for you ๐
Tim – great playing Tim! Is that ukulele smaller than a soprano?
Lisa – that’s cool, I dig the swung Feel. I think it’s fine, it’s probably just the recording. Good job!

AndrewKeymasterHey guys, the upload limit is only 5 megabytes. The upload feature is more for sharing photos. In the last 3 challenges I have accepted videos from members and hosted it for them. This time around, I’d like to ask everyone to please create a YouTube account to host your videos and share the video link on the forum.
Creating an account is easy and free ๐ here is the link to create an account: https://www.youtube.com/create_channel
If you are absolutely against doing so, please send me the performance video and I’ll be happy to host it for you: [email protected].

AndrewKeymasterWow, awesome job Naomi ๐ I have just a couple suggestions for you: Don’t forget to go back to the F chord in bar 13 and (you know this is coming, lol) memorize. Keep up the great work, your playing is sounding lovely!

AndrewKeymasterExcellent playing Phil! So your post brings up a good point. I’ve received a few emails from more advanced members stating they were going to sit this month’s challenge out because it is beginner themed.
Now this brings up an interesting thought on my end. Yes, this month’s songs are easy, but the challenge for an intermediate and advanced player lies in how you perform the piece.
The hardest part of playing is: The feel, achieving clarity in every note, and timing. All three of these aspects you nailed in your performance Phil ๐ So, I would like to see everyone who’s an Intermediate to Advanced player participate in this month’s challenge with these three criteria as your goal.
