AndrewKeymasterHave you seen our lessons on this technique? We’ve got a few covering it including two from me: watch this one first, then this one.
And two from Matt. One here and he covered the fundamentals again in this lesson from our new strumming course.
Jump into those lessons and if you’re still having trouble, please post a video here. I’d be happy to watch it to offer further help 🙂

AndrewKeymaster@ukukelley1 – Lovely playing, Sheryl. And wow! I have an ocarina and you play it so much better than me, lol. Love that instrument, it sounds so cool! How long have you been playing?
@malku2603 – The “flick” strum is sounding great! Big improvement! Keep up the excellent work, Akansha 🙂July 16, 2022 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Participate in the July 2022 Member Challenge: WIN Electric Ukulele! #52767
AndrewKeymaster@potato_lady – Yes, everyone who performs the entire piece gets an entry 🙂
There are free metronome apps for your phone and websites that have free, interactive metronomes. Even google has a free metronome if you search ‘metronome’. I’d recommend to use one that plays a different chime for beat 1. Helps you to know where you’re at.
@deadbuggy – Glad to hear, Sara. I appreciate you participating in so many challenges! I always look forward to watching your performances 🙂July 16, 2022 at 3:39 pm in reply to: Participate in the July 2022 Member Challenge: WIN Electric Ukulele! #52764
AndrewKeymaster@deadbuggy – BIG improvement in timing on the backing rhythm under solo! Well done 👏
I’d focus your practice on getting those bluesy licks in-time. Play along with me in the tab player. That’ll be the best way to get tighter on those licks.
Rest was great! Theme 1 was excellent, as was your tone 🙂
@capicdacrate – Great playing overall! I’m hearing a couple hesitations in the timing, such as holding beat 1 too long before connecting to 2 & in bars 2 and 6. Same thing with bars 9-12, you’re holding the half notes for longer durations. Try playing along with a metronome. That’ll help tighten timing in these sections.
@misterbones – Excellent performance! Great timing & feel throughout!@potato_lady – Great performance and I dig the freestyle outro 🙂
Timing was pretty solid overall and your understanding of rhythms is great, especially with the tricky syncopated hits on the &s. I do think you can get it a little bit tighter though. So I’d say, keep practicing with a metronome or with me in the tab player. Either option works.

AndrewKeymaster@malku2603 – Beautifully played and very cool to see you do the “flick” strum technique. One tip for that technique, it sounds like the pluck of the melody note is delayed a bit behind the strum. Try to cut down on that gap by plucking immediately following the strum.
And TY for the kind words! I appreciate it 🙂

AndrewKeymaster@madz_about_uke – Wow! That was phenomenal, bravo! 👏

AndrewKeymasterHi Sara, it sounds like you are falling behind. I’m emailing you an mp3 with a click throughout. Try tapping your foot on beats 1 and 4 throughout. Also, double check the chords when backing the solo. Couple sound off. And TY for the kind words! I appreciate it 🙂
AndrewKeymasterThank you, Annemarie! I use Jazz III picks. You can hear what they sound like on uke in the solo for La Bamba and The Chicken.
I tried felt, I didn’t like them. Never tried leather and honestly never knew that was an option. The Jazz III are made out of nylon. Diff feel than plastic picks. They also are small picks, which I prefer over large ones.

AndrewKeymaster@maryjanew – Ohhh! That works really well as a duet. Love it, sounds great!
Have a great trip and yes, PM tag is only needed for K challenges 🙂
@ukandrea – Beautifully played and a nicely added harmony in your version 👏
AndrewKeymasterI don’t have much experience with pedals for uke, but for guitar I do! I use a Wampler Ego Compressor and Boss DD-3 for delay. You can hear them both on this clip:
AndrewKeymasterSure! But I’d recommend posting it in Showcase Your Playing as more folks will see it that way 🙂

AndrewKeymasterHave you tried barring from 3rd string down (omit 4th)? That’s my go-to trick for simplifying barre chords.
