Psycho Clown Calliope Etude would be super fun to play with more effects on. Piano duet looked fun but never did it, Katie’s lulliby is sweet, Spanish Nights is a ‘goal’ song, and building a song off the cuff would be a great exercise, if just to see what I need to work on. (And the coarse is coming out)

Hard choices this month… Not sure what to do.

Hi Kath. I am not an Iperson but lots of users here are, so someone will probably be able to help you fix viewing problems. Not sure how many people are around right now with the holidays and New Years looming.

    Learning Paths

If you haven’t seen the learning paths link, it’s worth checking out to get a feel for the site. Other than that, i’ve only been playing uke a little over a year. I consider myself a “seasoned beginner” in rockclass ranking, but I skipped around so much in coarses, I kind of gave up trying to rank myself.

BTW- (this is my personal opinion, but it works for me. Individual results may vary. 😉) Don’t limit yourself to certain levels of songs. If you’re good at a technique or whatever skills a particular song uses already, a level 4 song might be easier to learn then a level 1 using all new techniques.

I’ll stop babbling. (I type long posts) Welcome though! Hope you join everyone in the monthly challenges! They’re fun and super helpful.

    Congratulations Brenna!!! 😄👍🎉

@rickymike – I never thought of Popcorn being Disco btw.. Lol. It was the first song they had us perform in elementary school, for a few years. Was actually really epic. Different grades got different percussion, oldest grade were ‘jazz hands’ on stage. Everything was done under blacklights with tubes and stuff that glowed. Really fun song though. Needed to try it on uke. Too weird I made french toast before the stream. (But in a sandwich maker lol, our stove is broken.)

@robinboyd – Yes, sorry. “Left hand trill” is correct, but it’s not what you call it outside classical music from what I remember, there’s another term for it. Trill, in general, just stuck with me because it’s what I stumbled across first. The other term is the more common one I think?

Tell Tiff her submission was awesome btw. Love both your forest recordings!

@robinboyd -Yes! Thank you. It’s a left hand trill. (Or whatever the non-classical term is for it) I’m not super at them, but they give the piece a bit more medieval feel.

    Peaceful Holidays to everyone.

    I am a Premium member
Greensleeves submission. I love this song. I paused before a couple places. I don’t normally, but didn’t want to start picking it apart and recording over and over. (Didn’t want to cut it down to the wire either,) this take was okay enough. Played with a new reverb to test it out. I got distracted by the voice leading lesson and was doing a bunch of other theory stuff this month so I could have gotten this a bit cleaner then I did.

Good luck to everyone. Hope Stephen gets better soon!

    Congratulations on a great rockclass101 2019!

    – A smallish request for clawhammer. It’s kind of mainly geared for high g (I think?), if you want the cool banjo sound at least.

Since i’m kind of got my head wrapped around learning on Low G, can you guys throw in some instructions on how to use it along the lines of jerry reed’s or buster b’s cover of Jiffy Jam (example of non-banjo-esque clawhammer sound, not a song request.) that uses the technique in a way that isn’t dependant on the G being tuned high, so I can use it in a way that sounds awesome on low G too if possible? 🙏

    – Main fluff request- Messages would be pretty great to get back.. 😇 or you’re going to force me to sing a parody of ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone’ at you eventually lol! 😉 (Just don’t ban me when your speaker’s tweeters blow out, and your soundcard catches fire from my horrible singing!) That should be a sufficiently terrifying threat! LOL! 😂

    – I do have a couple technique requests, but they don’t qualify for a proper ‘coarse’ probably. They would maybe fit in a short lesson up in the top bin of the ‘toolbox’ I think? (Yes, that classical vigorous string plucking thing I asked about is still one of them. I’m way too stupid apparently to figure out what i’m doing wrong. THAT sure wouldn’t qualify as a coarse for example. I think the normal rockclass intro on a vid would be longer than the actual 1 min technique explanation. LOL!)

    ———————————————
Anyway, Thank you guys again, so much, for the site and what you guys do, Andrew. (and Stephen.) Thank you as well to all the instructors who help teach lessons. (And Evan for just plain being amazing.)

Give a thank you, and a happy holidays shout-out too, to all the instructors, your drummer guy, (sorry don’t know his name) and Vanessa.

Jedart – Nice performance. I like the sound. It’s different than the finger or thumb sound. (I’d sound crazy trying to describe what it sounds like to me vs. Finger sound. lol)

Experiment and see if it’s something you personally like, and find fun, and use them when you’re in the mood to use picks, or if you think the sound you’re getting from picks would be perfect in some song you’re messing around with.

I use picks sometimes. Different materials sound neat against different string/ukulele combinations. (Woods, metals, plastics, etc.) It’s another nuanced skill i’m personally bad at but it’s fun to mess with.

@ robin – People stopped to listen because you captured a moment in a pretty place that you were all enjoying. Then you set it to music that YOU decided to share, and they decided to come listen to. They wouldn’t have had that otherwise. 💖

@samash07 – Please don’t feel you have to be at a certain level of skill. That’s not the point of the challenges.

I can only speak for myself, but I do them to have fun, learn stuff, keep motivated to play something and post by a deadline. And get advice to get better. (The most important thing)

Heck, I jumped in these challenges my first week of playing ukulele. I try to execute my feedback from my performance every month. It’s helping me so much. Just don’t ever compare yourself to anyone. We’re all just students learning at our own pace. 😁 So join in if you want! Try to keep it fun for you. No one’s judging anyone, I learn from everyone and i’m grateful for that
