diannaParticipantWhat an inspiring month! I used it as a review month. Often, friends/family will say play something on the uke and I will freeze, because I can’t remember anything….it’s very frustrating. So, this month besides continuing to work on Freight Train (which still needs practice) I pulled out Blue Moon, Five-Foot Two, Summertime (just did that last month) and Sittin’ By The Dock of the Bay….It didn’t take much to remember them, and I’m not playing to perfection….but to my surprise….they are still with me! It is my goal to add more tunes to that list, also so that I play less ‘mechanically’ and more ‘intuitively’…..or naturally….and of course, so when I am asked to play I have something at my fingertips that might also be recognizable.
Enough about me! There were 22 of us who posted and I have no doubt there were many others who worked on their own projects. Posting is a whole other beast…..I was impressed with those like @leb397 who posted after under 5 takes using a technique (clawhammer) that was new to her…..and it sounded great! I’m still chasing after that elusive ‘perfect’ take….which after too much time, I realize doesn’t exist and will often post one of the earlier takes…..
So here goes:
@Henri0 – you have wonderful command of the instrument….no pauses, no hesitations, beautiful flow in both cases you nailed the feeling of the pieces. With Frolic you have created a fun light-heartedness and Suicide is Painless – with gorgeous sustain and movement up and down the fretboard – it is fraught with emotion. Well done….
@malku2603 – thank-you for opening up a whole new genre of Uke playing and introducing us to Dotora Indian Folk style of playing…..absolutely love it! Loved watching your progress…..sounds great…..and absolutely inspiring!
@leihali – beautiful sound….love the gentle touch and clear tone….beautiful.
@johanna2509 – I have always thought of the (kalimba) as a toy….(like many think of the ukulele)….you have changed my mind…..what a lovely sounding instrument and you did it justice…beautiful playing….thanks for sharing.
@Misterbones – always love watching your posts….and you did not disappoint this month….so many cool components to your post…..impressive multi-instrumental improv….just too cool for school…..the in-sync merging of three videos… and the actual recording….loved the sound and I’m thinking you were using something other than your I-phone to record….sounds great!
@anyon1 – Gorgeous, clear and uplifting….great feel and love the rhythmic tapping….sounds like fun!
@rw1950merritt love that classic piece….a good one to keep in the repretoire because it’s so recognizable……slow and steady….you’ve got it down!
@nat-uke – L-O-V-E it…….what a beautiful gift….this one choked me up…so well done…and the technology was seamless….to the point that as a viewer you don’t even notice it….I’m so drawn in…..so joyful! Great one!
@lhamilton – Wow! You are so talented! Your whistling is ethereal and otherworldly….haunting….and then to whistle like that and play the Uke at the same time….just Wow! You gave me the chills with your performance.
@jasdel – love the slide….nailed the Blues!
@marianne – As always absolutely beautiful……I love the way you emote through the Uke…..you always take our humble little instrument to a different level……inspiring us all.
@karenj – I love that piece….and have been wanting to make my way thru the course…….nice job!
@katazumiri – first of all love the choice of tune……and the multi-instrumentation – just so Kooooool! And the fact that you are playing them all…..just wow! You blew me away! You must have a musical labratory…….always playing with sound…….thanks for sharing…..I feel lucky to get to listen to your creations!
@leb397 – love that tune and love the clawhammer…….I played that piece awhile ago….so I know it’s tricky, but you did an outstanding job first time clawhammering and posting a first-ish take…..love that banjo uke too……they are so much fun to play……..
@grannieannie – Great job on Spanish Romance – lovely…….and the sound of the dogs joining you warmed my heart……mine just passed last month….and I miss those sounds.
@brettboy – loved that piece…..and you have done it justice…..gorgeous….as always! Also, you are playing on a baritone……is this a new instrument for you…..if so I couldn’t tell……just amazing!
@akukes73……..Wow…..just picking up the guitalele? Sounds lovely…….not sure what the difference is between that and an actual guitar…….but very impressed at your ability to just pick up an instrument and play something…..fun!
@taylor22jane – keep playing……you are very good!
@janaq1 – Wow! Great job! Love that piece!And now onto September! Hope to see ya all next month…..
And again thanks to Rockclass101 and all the teachers for this great program!-

diannaParticipantQuick post tonight before midnight…..and will write something tomorrow…..
diannaParticipantRockin’ the Uke…..with an acoustic ‘Iron Man’….an Ozzy tribute……sweet…can’t wait to hear the whole arrangement……classic Black Sabbath riff, are you going to sing too?
diannaParticipant@The_Bumble_Bard….. I guess I’m a little late to this conversation. First, thank-you for taking the time to comment on my submission. The fact that you have taken this time to listen and share your very positive feedback means a lot to me…….but it’s not just me, somehow you have found the time to do the same for all the submissions. I have tried to do that, but it’s a huge commitment! So I absolutely appreciate what you do. Like @gi_gi I have thought it would be much easier if this platform had the comment and like/love capabilities that a facebook platform has. But, it is what it is…..and somehow we do manage to engage with each other. That is because people like you make it happen. I loved what @terryfallon3 said…”Miss Bumble, you are a vital cog of this uke community….” So true…….you bring great energy to this forum and it certainly would not be the same without you! So cheer up…..we love your spirit and your inspiration!
diannaParticipant@4stringBoy welcome to RockClass101…..Interstellar was gorgeous….looking forward to hearing more of what you have to offer……If Interstellar is any indication…..you are definitely stepping it up a notch with harmonic challenges……very exciting!
I guess we are all going to have to go thru the harmonics course!

diannaParticipantWell, things have slowed down a little and I can breath a bit……at least until the end of the month…. I love these free choice months…..it’s fun to see what others have chosen to work on, which I find inspiring….and it’s fun to create my own path. That said, I am going to be boring and simply continue practicing the piece that I worked on last month….following @Andrew’s advice. I didn’t have a lot of time to work on it last month, but at least I was able to memorize it so I can now focus on the nuances of the piece.
1. Execution: Listen to @Andrew playing “Freight Train” section by section, following his lead
2. Application: practicing daily section by section incorporating nuances of the piece
3. Evaluation: Record and post, comparing last month’s posting to this month’s…..hopefully I will see imporovement…..Also, if there is time, I will also work on other pieces that I have posted this year like “12th Street Rag”…….but that is probably being overly optimistic….

diannaParticipant@Andrew…. Thank-you for the feedback….it really is a fun song….and I love the history of it….I just read that Elizabeth Cotton wrote it when she was just a teenager….also that she was a self-taught, left-handed, upside down guitar player….creating her own style of playing.
I think I realize that it takes time for me to memorize a piece and begin to make it mine….once I do that then I go back and rework the nuances, including rhythms and maintaining tempo throughout…. So as a result….I often run out of time🤪…..Then, I begin another piece for the following month and totally forget the last one I spent so much time memorizing….
I’m happy to see that August we can decide what we want to work on…..so I will stick with this piece and work on rhythm and consistent tempo throughout.
@Deadbuggy……congratulations….looking forward to hearing your selection!And also, enjoy your month off @Andrew……you deserve it! Have some fun!

diannaParticipantAnother busy month! (Lucky to get a submission in at all) This was a great challenge….I had a lot of fun going thru the Rockclass101 catalogue….so much to chose from! I chose “Freight Train,”….loved the Ukulelezaza arrangement. Still needs work….chord transmission issues and brain farts causing hesitations…..
I have tried to listen to most of the submissions…..great job uke friends!

diannaParticipant@The_Bumble_Bard….our pets are family too, no matter how long they have been with us♥️
As far as learning new pieces goes……it’s true we all have our own strengths and learning styles…….I love that Rockclass101 offers so many opportunities to practice and develop new skills and techniques……a ukulele enthusiasts treasure trove!
Good-luck….”Free Falling” is a great rhythmic/strumming piece to hone your skills….looking forward to seeing your performance…..
@gi_gi_ You are being too hard on yourself…….it was good and you have a beautiful voice!😁
@anyon1….Great job…..solid rhythm!June 8, 2025 at 8:48 am in reply to: Participate in the May 2025 Member Challenge – WIN $2,250 Kanile’a Ukulele #74153
diannaParticipantThanks @Andrew, I will absolutely check out Matt’s lesson……and will work on using my forearm in my strumming…….it makes a lot of sense…..I think putting a strap on that Uke might help too?

diannaParticipantOH @The_Bumble_Bard I’m so sorry to hear about your sweet little fur-baby…..♥️♥️♥️
@Gi_gi_ I remember you singing Summertime also……it was beautiful….I’m almost thinking we should repost it in this thread…..but I will let you be the one to decide…..😁
@leb397 and @The_Bumble_Bard I am definitely not one of the people who can practice for 2 days and have something to post…..it is quite the opposite….I usually feel I could use more than a month to prepare……I find I’m anticipating that first day of the month….(almost like Christmas) waiting to find out what our new tunes will be…..maybe he should post the last day of the previous month (he has done that before……) I’d probably still be anticipating….
Not sure which one to work on this month…..tough choice!
