AndrewKeymasterI thought it would be great to revive this post ๐ Here’s what I’m working on and please share what you are doing too!
1) Execution – Adding a percussive beat to jazz up simple strumming. I found this performance on Reddit and thought it was too cool not to learn!
2) Application – I could use it over any strumming and singing song. A nice way to add a beat other than “chucking“.
3) Evaluation – Here’s where I’m at on day 2. I’d like to have it more fluid and “natural”. I plan to post a lesson on the technique next year.

AndrewKeymasterLisa, that was much better! The only thing I would continue to work on is practicing with a metronome to tighten up your timing. Great job overall, I’m glad the feedback helped ๐
AndrewKeymasterHi Phil, I’ve taught privately for 11 years and I’ve seen many students express feeling stuck and not progressing. Now you mentioned one thing that all of them said too: “[I] practice the same stuff every night”. This right here is the root of the problem. Instead of suggesting another song to work on, I would recommend to create a plan for progressing.
The feeling of being stuck and wondering what to practice or what to learn is the reason that I created Learning Paths. It’s a step-by-step guide that teaches you how to create a plan for continual advancement. I encourage you to read through the entire guide and pick one area to focus on.
When you pick what you’re going to work on, you need a way to stay accountable. Follow the guidelines in the The Accountability Thread. This Thread is all about developing an area of musicianship and implementing it into your playing. Please post your progress in the thread.
As an example, I’m currently working on a new technique: Adding a percussive beat to simple strumming. I found this video on Reddit and thought it was extremely creative, so I learned it. Now I’m practicing and will create a lesson video in the future for the site on it.
Hope this helps you and inspires you. Let’s make 2018 a great year for your playing!

Hi ser_ser, here is a tip to help with that hammer-on/pull-off. And thank you for donating ๐

Rickey, great to hear! Looking forward to watching your performance!
AndrewKeymasterThat string rings louder than the others. The best advice I can offer is to try to approach playing on that string with a lighter touch.
AndrewKeymasterTime to start the collection ๐ But seriously, I enjoy having the extra frets to work with on a concert and tenor.
AndrewKeymasterLooking forward to watching it Alissa ๐

AndrewKeymasterLeah, that was awesome! Well played ๐ 1 tip for you, try to not bend your first knuckle when fretting notes. The majority of our playing involves us fretting notes with the fingertip. So watch out for that and keep those fingers curved.
I have to say, I really enjoyed your performance and I’m happy that you found us!

ultramom, bravo! Way to go on your second song ๐ I’m very impressed with you, keep doing what you’re doing! One thing I noticed that I want to point out is your form on the barre chord. Try to keep that index finger completely straight and double check that your form is correct. Check out this lesson for help with form on barre chords. Let me know if you have any questions.

Kay, here is my helpful tip for working on coordinating singing and playing at the same time:

And wow guys! We had another member donate anonymously which now brings our total up to $374 raised for the charity ๐ this is amazing!
AndrewKeymasterWow! Beautiful playing Alissa ๐ I’ve been looking forward to watching this! I think you are doing a tremendous job with your arranging. The best advice I can offer, and this is something I continually do, is to study the arrangements (and originals) of the artists you admire. In doing so, you’ll continually learn new ideas for your own writing.
For example, our newest lesson was adapted from my friend Dan Holloway’s arrangement. One thing I’ve been studying from his playing is how “natural” his flow is. It’s not ridged and 100% on time, like a computer playback. And that’s something I’ve been trying to work on in my playing.

AndrewKeymasterWow Brett, that was really cool! Really jazzes it up and I’m taking you wrote the middle section and the ending too. Well done! The only thing I would point out is the taps on the body after the intro. The rhythm seemed a bit relaxed, maybe tighten that up. But, wow that was awesome! I’ll be sharing this on our FB page tomorrow ๐
