September 7, 2024 at 1:15 pm in reply to: September 10 2024 Live Lesson: Do You Need Music Theory to Be a Good Uke Player? #63661
The_Bumble_BardParticipantOh my, this is such a great topic… I don’t even know the answer though. π
I guess I am more of a “by ear” player, but I didn’t even realize fully what that was in the context of the music world until I started playing uke. Just that my childhood piano teacher didn’t want me to do it and therefore I wanted to do it more. π So I feel like I honed that skill much more than reading music well or understanding theory.
To me it boils down to what you love to do with regard to music. I love creating by ear and I don’t love theory as much, but you can create both ways. I can see how having limited theory knowledge makes certain aspects of creating harder though, especially with things like rhythm and creating harmonies. Also, it can be much harder to communicate what you’ve created to other people without the written music. But for me I’ve just enjoyed organically learning things like chords and rhythm as I learn songs, along with the courses here on RC101 and on Matt’s Patreon. And *very slowly* learning how to write down songs with Matt’s help. π
I don’t know if you can be a great ukulele player without theory, but maybe you can be a pretty okay one. π π
I hope other people chime in on this topic! Thank you for these great lessons! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@rickkhan, really cool! Very unique sounding version of that song! I think it definitely captures the song very beautifully! π
I mean, if you’re interested in someone who can make cat sounds vaguely on the beat, I could duet with you. π Not really though. I know there are some people on here who can sing. Besides that, I’ve never tried to duet or play uke actually with anyone before. π³π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@leb397, thank you so much, my friend! I’m so happy you liked it! ππ This sounds really strange, maybe, but I feel like I’m way better at turning a non-clawhammer song into clawhammer than playing an existing clawhammer song. π I may be wrong, but I think it’s because everyone has things they intuitively do when they play or create a song, so you’re basically trying to learn someone else’s way of playing when you learn a tab as much as the written notes. Maybe that’s really obvious, or maybe I’m a weirdo for thinking of it that way. Hard to say. π So, I know I’m going to find C-Davy Shan’s arrangement of Wildwood really challenging, too, even though I can play the technique. He just creates really good, complex and challenging songs. π
Anyway, I’m so excited that you’re learning that! That does make it extra hard to memorize when you don’t have as many repeating patterns, agreed. I felt that way learning “Always With Me” by British Steven. ππ That’s a lovely tune, too. Anyway, extra kudos to you for learning Wildwood, it’s tricky, but I’m so looking forward to hearing it! ππ
Haha!! I love and accept this title! ππππ»π¦π¦ππ₯ππ₯Ίπ³π»ππͺπ€ππ βοΈππππππ¦©πͺπππππππ (Those are all my most recently used smilies) π
@dianna, thank you so much, clawhammer sister!! π I really appreciate that because I love to try to bring out that quality with clawhammer, a softer quality, contrary to the “hammer.” I also do love the twangy, brash sound it has too; that’s what makes it fun. ππͺππSeptember 4, 2024 at 5:56 pm in reply to: Participate in the August 2024 Member Challenge: TV Themes! #63649
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@johanna2509, I look forward to that! ππΈπ»πΉ Meow? Sometimes it’s a question… π
@leb397, thank you so much, my friend!! Haha! I’m so glad you found it funny. π I think I actually might draw out the last few panels that I didn’t include in the end because (in my mind) they’re hilarious. π π Thank you… It’s true, I feel a lot of people are like that, really shy but still wanting to do silly, ridiculous things. π I know I am definitely like that. I’m looking forward to your clawhammer, too, so exciting that you’re trying it out!! ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@katazumiri, yes, they loved it! Like I said there’s a game that goes with that where you pass the cup in a circle using that beat and it keeps getting faster and whoever messes up is out. My sister and I are lightning fast and pros at it so we were pretty much always the last two standing, but the kids loved it. π π
That video was fascinating! I loved that so much, especially how that concept applies to Bach, Pachabel, and Mozart (that song at the end was so beautiful). That’s really interesting though, I didn’t know that was a thing, but now I’m definitely going to pay more attention with that! I immediately want to experiment with that on the uke now too. π Besides the cup beat (which now I understand, thank you, and how the concept of a canon applies), have you ever created something using that concept?
Thank you again for explaining that and sharing that video! So useful. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@rickkhan, really, really beautiful! Well done! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@otzepeng and @deadbuggy, really beautiful takes on that one! You both brought out the spirit of that song so beautifully (or at least what I perceive to be the spirit of that song, lol). Really lovely! π
@jbmills07, really glad to hear you share again! π Such a beautiful take on that, really well put together. The ending is great. That moment of satisfaction when you nailed a take! π I know that feeling very rarely, lol. Really well played! π
@johanna2509, very, very beautiful! The chord melody edition you made is so perfect! When I first saw that video, I had the exact same thought, that those parts were destined to be combined, but you did it really perfectly! πβ€οΈOh, I was going to say, for “A Duet From the Heart,” when I first heard it, I thought it had high clawhammer potential, and I still do think that, but I guess it would be silly to try to turn that into a clawhammer version when there’s already a clawhammer song this month. That’d be so silly to do that………… Who would do that? π π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@katazumiri, slight delay in filming this, but I finally got to film my version of the “cup beat.” Hopefully it’s clear enough what I’m doing. I maybe should’ve slowed it down a bit to illustrate. I think it’s pretty clear, though.
Okay, here ’tis:
Sorry about T.S. Eliot’s face (the book I did the cup beat on). I hope I don’t get haunted now, LOL. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@katazumiri, ha, that’s true. There’s no rush with these things. I like these kind of more in depth conversations about music, a lot. So thank you for that! π
I didn’t realize the different cups in Eastern Duo’s video were playing different beats. That’s an interesting approach. I’m now realizing that my version of the cup beat that I learned as a kid is definitely more like Anna’s; though maybe not exactly the same hand motions, I think it’s the exact same rhythm. Side note, that game has since blown up out of control at my family gatherings. π My niece and nephew are obsessed with it now which is pretty magical. Now we all play it pretty often, so thank you for bringing that up. ππ
So, with your version, it still seems like you’re doing different beats with the three-split screen. At least one of them seems different. I’m so sorry if I’m not understanding. Did you have three layers of the same thing just to increase the sound of the cup beat?
I’ll try to record me doing my cup beat later today when I’m filming some other musics. Thank you for this great conversation! ππ

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@misterbones, that was really amazing! You’re such a clean player and utilize the clawhammer technique so perfectly. π It’s always so fun to hear a banjolele. π πͺ
I’m hoping to learn that one, too, hopefully I can do okay with it and the backing track. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantYay, congrats, @shmu88! That uke is really cute! π
All the other entries posted were so, so good! Such a talented group of people. @johanna2509, yours turned out really lovely, both the piano version and the singing! I mean, it’s no cats singing, but you know. πππ At some point you should share your “cat edition” of a song. π ππ
@swissconsinboy, thank you! π Agreed, I often miss having cats around. They’re wonderful critters. Hopefully some day I’ll be able to have them again. πΈ Really great job with The Office theme and your description was funny! πAugust 28, 2024 at 5:38 pm in reply to: Participate in the August 2024 Member Challenge: TV Themes! #63472
The_Bumble_BardParticipantThank you all so much! Your replies were so nice, I kind of wanted to cry when I read them. π Thank you! But I want to write a little reply to everyone.
@annemarie, haha!! Thank you so much! I was chuckling to myself “like” a psycho when I was making some of those. π Thank you, is that what they used to say on the show Mary Tyler Moore, “moxy”? Someone said I was like her once in a cafΓ© I used to work at. Thank you!! π
@gi_gi_ hahaha!!! I’m so glad you liked it and found it as funny as I hoped you would!! ππ ππ Your kind words mean a lot to me, I really appreciate you saying that. π Haha!!! At that point, it was getting so late and I hadn’t eaten, so hangriness set in but I didn’t want anyone to think the cats were harmed since the last image was them attacking each other. ππ ππ π Oh I’m cry laughing now too. π Also that last image was going to be way worse than that but I know rc101 is rated PG, so I toned it down a bit. π ππ
@dianna, haha!!! Facts. That entry started out so simple and spiralled so fast. ππ π
@Andrew, thank you so much! That means so much that you say that and that you found it funny. ππ I don’t know why, I thought you specifically might find certain of those images of the cats funny, like the ones where they’re fighting. π
@marianne, haha! Thank you! I pounded out those illustrations so quickly last night because I didn’t have a lot of time to do them. π
@johanna2509, oh my, are you serious?! That is so, so funny that you also do that!! π I choose the cat idea for a variety of reasons, but it mostly had to do with my sadness that I wasn’t able to really sing the song normally and I wanted to try something very alternative. π My friends who have seven cats also have a keyboard that makes cat sounds when you play it and I was trying to channel the synthesized sound of that “meow.” π π Thank you so much! I also really love cats and wanted to illustrate what their fur-iendships are like: cuddling mixed with random street fighting. ππ
@katazumiri, I have heard that!! I went and listened to it in the thread. Thank you for comparing my little entry to that, although that is so much more beautiful to me! Next time I’ll start a separate thread for my longer reply like you did. Anyway thank you! ππSorry that post also spiraled so fast. I wrote this so fast. π I just get really excited talking about these things. Thank you again so much! ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@katazumiri, sorry for a delayed reply, this week and last week has been unexpectedly crazy out of nowhere. Normally I’m not this busy during the week. That all gets saved up for the weekend as far as “more involved” social activities usually, like parties. Nope, not this time. π π
Thank you for the interesting explanation and the illustrations! Well, the examples. I have never heard that version of Anna’s Cup Song. Really like that! And I also hadn’t heard Eastern Duo’s version. I thought you fully made up that connection, but your take is obviously still very different from that.
So, we may have to reference back to the side by side you shared in the thread of the two beats. It looked like you changed the sixteenth notes to eighth notes maybe in the first measure? I also want to share my version of the cup beat because while it’s the same sounding rhythm, the way Anna and Eastern Duo does it is different. I think I also might need to go back to your version and listen again to hear the beat you chose again. Sorry, rhythm and theory is not my strong suit with music. I’m very easily confused by it. π π
Hahaha!! Oh my yes, I have heard that cat song before. I love that so much. It’s actually genuinely beautiful but also hilarious. π
I think on Friday I’ll have time for a less rushed reply and reading what you share next if you get to. So looking forward to that. π π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantWelp….. There’s no turning back now. I’m fully committed to what I’m about to share. Absolutely maximum jankitude: Achieved. π
Here is the “Fur-iends” Theme:

Thanks to @gi_gi_ especially, but to all the lovely people here, for encouraging my silly whims! ππ
So many incredible entries! @dianna, your take on this theme was so lovely, beautiful singing and playing! @marianne, majestic and gorgeous playing as usual! Everyone else has done an amazing job, too. I won’t lie, I’m pretty pleased with how ridiculous mine is in every way… π
Please remove me from the prize drawing this month. And sorry about your ears, @Andrew, they may never be the same. π

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@katazumiri, really neat and interesting! Why did you choose to modify the beat? So, I sensed immediately that the “cup beat” / motions were different because there is a game that goes along with that beat that my sister and friends and I used to play as kids. Obviously, after seeing your video, I had to try it and it turns out that information was stored away perfectly in my brain because I could still do the beat / motions. π Guess I know what we’re doing at the party this weekend (’cause we’re adults and still play silly games like that, but also my young niece will likely want to learn it). π ππ Thank you for explaining that and also for the trip down memory lane! π π
