themmcoys – No problem playing slow if that’s where you’re at with a song. It’s better to play slow until it’s under your fingers then to speed up without having proper technique. It sounds like you’ve got it down at this speed and now is a great time to incrementally try speeding it up. Good job practicing! Thanks for the submission.

saiyara – Hey saiyara. Good job! There are a few parts in the mid section that notes slipped but I’m assuming that’s what you meant for the area of improvement. That can be perfected with practice. But here’s a video Andrew made earlier this month for another member. It’s got a tip for cleaning up that barre chord section (measure 3) in the first theme:

Kidelozzi – Excellent performance! Don’t feel bad about submitting at 75%. It’s better to play clean and well, like you did, at 75% than sloppy at 100%.
Joe150 – Hey Joe, sounds like you’re getting parts of the structure under your fingers. A great way to break a piece like this down is to go 4 bars at a time. Get the first 4 perfect and then move onto the next. Thanks for the submission good song choice!
Patdrehu – The whole scenery of this video is great! This one sounded good. You can always get both songs down for fun later on no problem!

themccoys – hello thanks for your submission to the Fall Members Contest. You are very good at reading that song on the spot! Of course there were a few slow downs with that. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a few more practices to a metronome but overall decent performance. Thanks for the submission good luck!
yukalele – Hey man good performance and killer background! I seen you said it was learned a bit late so needs practice but still overall good job! If I ever need to learn songs that fast the best way to do it is to break it up 4 bars at a time. Get the first 4 bars perfect and move to the next 4 (and so on, and so on.) There were of course some slow downs from sight reading that could be fixed with a practice to a metronome but overall this was a good performance! Keep it up smudge thank you for your submission. 🙂
isabelm – Wow you got the playing and the singing down this is great. Loved it. I know you said you edited 2 videos together to get that transition down which is fine. For learning quick new songs I would get something like this down 4 bars at a time and move to the next 4 bars when those are perfect. There are very few parts that speed up that could be fixed practicing with a metronome as is usually the case with new songs we learn. I liked your playing only suggestion to make this song shine is focus on adding the swing to this piece. A suggestion I would make is to slow things down with a metronome and practice the song 4 bars at a time to get the timing absolutely perfect. ukandrea – Overall it sounds like it’s coming along well. There are a few spots here or that that are still in the works. The way I would practice those is breaking it up into 4 bars at a time. When I get the first few down I move to the next as to ad those little details in my playing. Try this to get the most out of new songs. Sounds good keep it up!
concan – Hey concan! Good to see another one of our premium members entering our members challenge! I can hear that like you said you’re getting the swing under your fingers. Only suggestion I would have you already mentioned which is the speed. Next time you play set a metronome at xxx a few times and the timing will start to feel a little more natural for you. leslieb – Hello leslieb. I seen your message above the video. I think you had a good submission. Yes there are a few pieces that need work but this is a great start. You can still tell you got the song and structure down. Regarding your nerves comment even after playing for all these years I still get a little nervous for my performances. Happens to the best of us and the best thing I can say for that is keep posting these videos and it’ll help tremendously with focus and nerves during performance. Can’t wait to see where it takes you. Good performance!
evapaju – Good evening evapju! I enjoyed your video. Happy 8 months on uke your progress shows. Your posture looks fine and your fingering and strumming look good. I can hear a hint of the swing feel in your playing my suggestion would be for the few times there were short slow downs or pauses. For those I would take a metronome and play straight through the song with it a few times to engrain the timing in your playing. Other then that it is sounded great. kelsey91 – Hello kelsey91 cool colored uke! I’m glad you’re getting the song down and have played it a good deal of times. Yay for new songs. Now as for being nervous on camera you’d be surprised how many of us deal with that from time to time even including myself. One thing I will say that helps is to continue posting videos like these. Plenty of our members run into the same thing but if you’re starting to post yourself playing you’re already on the right track to getting into the feel of your performances in no time. Keep up the good work! 🙂

For this piece in particular I would play it slightly slower and maintain a slow swung feel for the picking as well as the chords. I can hear a little bit of the swing come out in your playing but if you ever need an incredible helpful article on getting swing down perfect you can find that here. It is starting to sound very nice. The few hick ups or slow downs can be easily worked out by playing a bit slower to a metronome a few times. I enjoyed your playing stellar performance!

It looks like you’re learning the song and it’s coming along nice and will be smooth with a little love and practice. A suggestion to help out is whenever I learn new songs like this I will learn 4 bars at a time. Then when those 4 bars are perfectly how I want them move to the next 4 and so on. lbilkie – Hey Ilbilkie. Great video and good song choice! First off good job learning all the chord shapes and getting the song structure going. Your Uke tone sounds nice as well! Now 1 thing that can really bring this performance to the next level would be adding more of that swing feel into play for this song in particular.
As always it’ll come with a little practicing and playing but I think it’ll really make you shine on this song. Here’s a video we have breaking this down in depth for all of our rock class family. You’re coming along great, implement more swing and you’ll be bursting with style!
saiyara – Hey Saiyara great video! I’ll start off by saying I really enjoyed your strumming tone and passion in your performance! Very nice.
One thing we could do to add an extra layer of style to this performance would be to practice that “swing feel” for Moon River.
You could hear it coming out in your playing and we can really hone in on that. Here’s a video we added for you guys that really breaks down the method and practice for adding more of that swing. That being said you’re doing great and we enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work!

One nugget of wisdom I would have for this performance is after you get as comfortable as you want with this piece watch our video on adding a swing feel in our playing. It’s very comprehensive and our community members like it because it breaks down the easiest way to put that swing feel under your fingers. You can find that here. Take some of those tips and see if you can hear that swing style come out in your playing on this piece. Other then that you had a good performance. Do keep up the good work!
patdrehu – Patdrehu wow! You chose a beautiful scene for your video! We love the island feel. That being said you did a really good job at volume and sound control on this piece. I can almost feel your connection to your Uke. Now a suggestion I would have would be to to focus in on the swing feel we can hear in Moon River. If you’d like to implement that we have a video here that goes in depth how to distinguish and deploy that sound into your playing! Do that and you’ll be top of the ranks in your performance! It sounds like you really put time into the feeling of your chords. It’s refreshing. I can also hear the swing coming through well in parts of your performance. Bravo! joelnal – Joelnal good work on Moon River! You got all the parts down well, few hiccups here and there and still overall very enjoyable performance. Common focus I would have with this piece is to work on keeping the swing consistent to bring out the feel in your playing. You seem to be getting it down and we also have a video here to help perfect that swung feeling. Overall good performance. Keep up the good work!
kpurdy – Kpurdy! For being 4 months into learning ukulele you are doing phenomenal. It’ll all come in practice and performances like this but you’re on the right track. One main thing I would work on now that’ll help you get the most out of your technique is to place the Uke closer to the center of your lap then on the side of your hip. I actually use to do the same thing and it just feels so much easier and relaxing having it in my lap and centered for performance. It’ll help you connect physically with your instrument more while playing and free up some space for that right wrist to breathe.
Here’s a video Andrew made earlier this year to help another member out. You can also check out these other lessons for extra help. Here is the first and second lesson I recommend reviewing.
Try those out and see if that helps you connect with your instrument. Other then that you’re well on your path. Can’t wait to see your progress and journey with us. Good submission!
bibilele – Wow this was a really really good performance! Even caught the park view! 🙂 You have really good timing and your playing sounded great. Great connection to your instrument. Now a few times it wavers in and out of the swing feel but for the most part it was a 100% killer performance! I’m sure from hearing your playing you’re familiar with a swing feel but just incase we made a video for the community on how to capture a swung feel that anyone can find here. You sound really good. More of that and keep it coming.
timolnz – One of our members who chose Moon Waltz and it sounds good! From what I can hear it sounds like you’ve got the picking and structure down and are just working on getting our timing perfect. A few more practices with a metronome on there should get you perfect. Other then that good job on your submission song sounds interesting in a higher octave!
gi_gi_ – Hey gi_gi_. Good submission and your uke sounds nice! It also sounds like you got the chords and melodies down here. A lot of people posting this were kind of in the middle of a straight feel and a swing feel. Luckily we have a video for the community to have easy access to a swing lesson! You can find that here. Watch this and apply a few of the pointers to get this song perfect. What you’re doing now sounds great and that swing should give you just the style boost you’re looking for. Great submission gi_gi_
