Linked names on feedback is a great idea if it’s not too much work. If it is in the end, I’m happy to have two tabs open so I can easily find the performance. Looking at the feedback for everyone is soooo helpful. It’s one of the many things that makes this site special.

Lisamdh, I love your tune and your precious Kali.

Thanks for this challenge, Andrew. There’s so much here that I want to learn! How to choose? I’ve favourited quite a few to follow up on.

Eventually I settled on Waltz in C, for a couple of reasons. First, it’s just a pretty tune and second it has a lot of the techniques I’d like to learn: incorporating twiddly bits and achieving a staccato sound on some notes.

Execution: I’m calling myself a seasoned beginner, but I might be pushing it a bit. I don’t have a lot of control yet, either right or left hand, so I’m hoping Waltz in C will help me focus on that and be fun to learn. At the moment I can’t do staccato at all, so my aim by the end of the month is to be getting there.
Application: Learn the tune all the way through so I can focus more on technique without worrying which notes come next. At the same time, take a few minutes to practice the damping technique and try to incorporate that into the tune as I learn it.
Evaluation: Record progress each week. I’ve never done this while learning a new tune before, so it should be interesting 🙂

At the mo I’ve got an injured middle finger on my right hand so I can’t pluck properly. Here’s hoping it heals nice and fast or it’ll really slow me down.

Actually managed to make the live stream! Congratulations to Felix , I hope you will treat us to a demo of that beautiful uke.

I still consider myself a winner because I found a great community and learned so much over the last three months. Thanks Drew and the team for all your hard work. Looking forward to many more learning challenges.

    Merry Christmas to everyone.

Hi everyone, and Merry Christmas, I’m loving everyones playing!

Here’s my attempt at The First Noel. I CAN play this perfectly when no one is looking. Add a camera to the mix and everything implodes. So not perfect… I only had time for one try so I’ll take it 🙂

PS. Please let me know if I’ve put my settings so the video doesn’t appear again. I’m still rubbish at this YouTube malarky.

Hi Stephen, and thank you for the feedback and encouragement – it really helps. I didn’t realise I was supposed to hit more than one string with the slapped harmonic, so I need to revisit that section and revise. I’m still practising this piece and still finding it a challenge! I note what you said about rhythm, I think I just get excited when it feel as though it’s going right for once. lol.

    Hi Everyone,

Here’s my attempt at La Gitanita. I’m so impressed with everyone’s entries so far this month. It’s fun seeing different interpretations and encouraging to realise I’m not the only one to struggle with some things – like timing and that harmonic in this tune, not to mention fingers turning into sausages the moment you press record. Ha! My rendition isn’t so clean, I was just happy to get through it. Quite a challenge.

Thanks for the encouragement, Andrew. It’s so cool and super helpful that everyone gets feedback. I am busy learning La Gitanita right now, and it’s another big leap for this six-month beginner. Your teaching videos are excellent.

It’s tough to know which way to go. I print out the music/tabs, for reference and to remind myself of the tune if I forget it later on when I haven’t played it for a while. But I learn from the video, endlessly pausing and looping. I try to mentally ‘see’ as well as feel the pattern of shapes my left hand is making in relation to the tune. It’s a bit strange because I now find that with tunes I know well, if I look at my left fingers while playing my brain gets confused and forgets the pattern so I can’t play as well as I can when not looking.

But I try to use the music notation too, because eventually I would like to be able to learn a piece on my own, so I guess we need both skills.

    Hi everyone,

First time posting and first challenge entered. Who could resist that prize?? This Walking Dead theme was a real challenge to learn, especially that first chord change!
