Here’s a progress video: synthetic mode with the metronome at 100% speed using the tab viewer (sans dynamics).

It’s a bit sloppy in places and hitting the harmonic gets tricky at this pace, so I can’t consistently hit it every time. My chord transitions sound messy because the strings stick to my fingers and ring out when I lift (unintentional pull-offs happening, BOO). Not sure how to fix that. I don’t have sweaty hands, so maybe I’m pressing too hard? 🙁

    Progress report:
I’ve been practicing Allegro on synthetic mode with the metronome on and was feeling pretty good at 90% (almost there to 100% speed). Out of curiosity, I made the mistake of turning it on to video to play alongside Andrew’s playthrough and discovered how much faster 100% there is. LOL. I couldn’t even get close. Those are some fast fingers, man! It’s not called Allegro (brisk tempo) for nothin’. 😂

I haven’t even gotten to dynamics, yet. 😒

Andrew, you should try In-N-Out while in Cali. Don’t be fooled by the short menu they appear to have. They have a bunch of options on a not so secret menu that all Californians know. Or maybe it’s just a southern Cali thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I kinda miss their animal style well done fries. 🤤

I don’t eat meat now, but when I used to, I loved In-N-Out. If you’re staying near the Convention Center, there are a couple very close by (but they’re usually very small and crowded).

If you want an actual burger restaurant (not fast food) Slater’s 50/50 is very popular and so is Umami Burger. Umami Burger has vegan options. 😀

I’m not sure a soprano can take the tension of a low G string without starting to warp in the body and neck eventually.

If it were me, I’d keep the soprano as is and upgrade to a properly setup concert strung with low G.

Andrew, I think that would work great! I hope it doesn’t create more work for you and Stephen, though. I can only imagine how time-consuming providing feedback can be as it is, but I find it so helpful in learning from (not just mine, but from everyone’s evaluations) if I can reference both more easily. 🙂

Thank you for all you do!

That is a really good idea, Rickey. I usually open up two browser tabs (so that I can go back and forth between the performance page and the critique page). Another idea might be to link the original post to the user’s name at the beginning of the feedback? It still requires a different tab, but it helps to navigate there faster.

Since joining RC101 in late June 2018, I’ve learned 14 pieces (12 of which are memorized). 6 of them are the July through December monthly challenge songs. I’ve forgotten Day Dreaming and I couldn’t ever get Ode to Joy to stick. 😝 All but one of these are Beginner or Level 1. I’m going out on a limb to work on the ONE Level 2 piece in my arsenal (Allegro).

As the months have passed, I’ve become more serious about not just being able to play through from memory but to play it cleanly and in time (with dynamics would be a bonus). I’ve never gotten that far with Allegro because I didn’t have the accountability (like in a challenge). Only recently in the last couple of months have I consistently started using the tab viewer. Playing along with the metronome and looping sections has really helped me play smoother. It was an undervalued tool that I should have been utilizing sooner in my learning.

The classical-themed challenge was ending when I joined and I just wasn’t at that level of capability. I’d only been playing the ukulele two months at the time and not only is it quite fast in pace, but I could not get the stretch chord without pausing a million years (exaggeration, sort of)! Then there’s that bar chord at the end…forget about having done that 3 months ago. Now I feel like I might be ready and it’s such a beautiful piece…I think this is the one for January 2019!

I would love to be able to play it close to Andrew’s set pace with dynamics. I might be in over my head, but I won’t grow if I don’t push myself, right? 🤷🏻 And I guess that’s kind of the whole point of these challenges. 😉

Dave, I think Andrew already gave you two entries. He’s got you!

Well, it’s almost the 11th hour (literally) and I have no choice but to post what I have so far. Every month, something new about the beginner level choice keeps me challenged. December was no exception. On top of trying to work on my timing and dynamics, this song was deceptively difficult to memorize. WHY?! Who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I am thoroughly unamused with the mistakes I didn’t even realize were there until I watched the playback. 😤

The other thing that hung me up in practice was the thumb strum/picking. I am absolutely awkward at it. It was a struggle not to sound choppy or loud in random places. 🙁

Anyway, here it is. Happy Christmas to those who celebrate! I’ll be working Christmas Eve, so I might not be able to see who won the Kanile’a until later in the evening, but it’s been an amazing journey seeing all the submissions these last few months. I’ve learned a lot in the process and have very much enjoyed watching/hearing the entries.

    I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER.
