So here’s my challenge entry…a year into playing the ukulele.

Even though this song only took an hour to learn and memorize, I was plagued with a lot of buzzing and muting in all the bar chords. I tried to minimize the string noise I normally get (sticky fingers) based on Andrew’s feedback for someone else, but I couldn’t get rid of it all.

A week of practice and it’s still not as clean as I’d like (not nearly), but here it is…There’s even a part where I couldn’t hold in my own incredulity and you might hear me laughing (whoops). As many times as I’ve recorded this, I hate all the takes. 😒

    I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER.

It might be what some might call uncommon time (as opposed to common time which is 4/4). I don’t do a lot of music reading, so my experience with 12/8 is pretty basic. I haven’t made much progress into the reading notation course like I should.

Oh, I just realized you’re talking about example 3. 😂

That one looks more complicated. So he has a triplet in the second beat instead of it lasting two beats. That’s a fast triplet!

    I’m bad at counting along…😬

If you’re counting each bar in threes as suggested by the article (one two three, two two three, three two three, four two three), then I think it’d be counted as: one trip-uh-let three, two trip-uh-let three, three trip-uh-let three, four trip-uh-let three?

Jerry, I don’t think those eighth notes in this case are triplets. They seem to just be grouped in threes to count easier.

12/8 time signature means there are 12 beats to a measure and the eighth note gets the beat. Quarter note would be worth two beats (dotted quarter is worth three beats). To be triplets in this time signature, you’d see three sixteenth notes making up the span of two beats (I think).

Now that I think back on January’s challenge, I remember how much my thumb would start to hurt after practicing Allegro after a while.

The part where Matt mentioned people generally use brute force to make up for lack in dexterity or technique is right on the money. He brought up so many great points that didn’t seem so obvious until he went over it in the live session.

I’ll have to try his suggestions for changing the angle and putting the pressure closer to the fret wire than I had been doing.

What an awesome new way to learn and be able to interact in real time! Thanks, Matt and Andrew!

When I had the volume set to a normal-ish level, I couldn’t hear past 15 kHz. With the volume turned all the way up on headphones, I could hear up to 21 kHz. Then silence after that. What a fascinating little test.

So heartbreaking to hear about your kitty cat, Lisa! 💔

Congrats on winning the awesome private lesson with Andrew (priceless), but how devastating to have to say goodbye to your beloved pet tomorrow. 😢

You can definitely download it to your iPad. Mine is on my phone but the app is available on any iOS device. Have fun!

Rickey, the stickers make the fretboard look super busy, so it’s not something I’d recommend using on anything but a cheap learner uke, but it does come in kinda handy as a reference tool. I hardly use that uke anymore so it doesn’t bother me it looks like that now. lol

There’s a cool app you can try called Fret Trainer and it helps you quiz yourself with notes on the fretboard (like flash cards). It’s a free app and can be switched to different instruments including the ukulele. It keeps score of how many you get right/wrong and how long it took you to answer. Check it out! I’m still no good at it.

When I bought my first concert uke last year, it included a bunch of extras in the beginner package it came in that I never thought I’d use. One of which were stickers for your fretboard. I had an extra set, so I initially gave them to a friend’s 8 year old for her Makala Dolphin. I never thought to use the other set for myself because it looks kinda gimmicky, but then it dawned on me that maybe it’ll actually help me memorize the finger and note positions better (especially with the reading course).

In the first five months, I’d acquired six ukuleles, so I don’t mind putting stickers on this learner uke. I definitely wouldn’t do it to my main (good) uke. It makes the neck look messy and super busy.

In my head, I was playing with dynamics, but every time I played back my videos, it wasn’t that apparent, so I kept recording…which quickly became frustrating. Although I was playing with more feeling here in this video than my progress video from two weeks ago, it’s the wrong kind of feeling (anger 😤🤣). I might have hit that harmonic too hard (🙈).

Anyway, the other goal was to play up to speed and I may have reached 135 bpm, but it also resulted in more muted notes. Let’s not talk about the weird timing issues I had when I got to the tapped ending, okay?

I had another take that went a little more smoothly until the ending when it all collapsed. I kinda wish I could have edited best pieces of both takes. 😂

LOL, Misty. I wouldn’t go that far in using such an analogy, but Nathalie really does have a great feel in her playing. It’s very fluid and natural. I couldn’t help noticing that my body instinctually wanted to sway along. She’s the ukulele equivalent of the pied piper. 😂
