    Hi, @dangar.

I can see the appeal of the Fender guitar-style packaged into a uke, but I don’t think the sound quality is quite up to par to justify getting one. I agree with Robin. I don’t have any personal experience myself either, but the reviews I’ve seen/read have mentioned Fender making ukuleles for looks over function.

Have you seen this video review? It’s for the Telecaster version of the Fender Fullerton line, but it’s mostly the same build other than the slight design difference (I think). Here’s the written review that goes more in-depth.

If you can hold one and sample it in-person, that would probably help. I’m not sure if that’s possible right now with COVID restrictions pretty much everywhere, so you might have to wait. You might love it or be completely disappointed.

Keep us posted when you find your next uke! Better yet, show and sample it for us in a video if you can. 😉

    Welcome, Lucas!

Yeah, you’re going to need a separate low G string. If you tried to tune down the high G string, it’ll be too slack and floppy because the tension won’t be right. It’s more convenient to have two ukes if you can afford it. That way, one is always strung either high or low G when you need it. Only having one uke and switching strings can be cumbersome.

Have fun exploring the site! Hope to see you join the monthly challenges sometime. They’re a ton of fun. 🙂

I’ve heard of all solid wood ukes opening up over time to produce a richer sound, but I don’t know about mellow. The type of strings you use can also affect the sound of the uke. They go dull over time and with more play which sound different than fresh ones, too. Maybe what you’re experiencing is a combination of all these things even if the replacement uke is the same brand/model.

After trying for a half hour, this was the best of the bunch. Not only did the timing go a little wonky, but my hammer-on/pull-offs started to sound messy and less clear with the building panic the longer I went …not to mention string noise creeping in bit-by-bit as I sweat through the anxiety of recording. 🤪 I was just relieved to get it over with (as you’ll hear at the end of the video, lol). 😅

    Happy holidays, uke friends!

@lbilkie – Is your video set to private? I can’t view it.

This is my first time playing with a backing track and it was an interesting learning experience, to say the least. I usually have timing issues, so I really had to count through this one. Like a metronome, the backing track doesn’t stop if you mess up and it was hard not jumping the gun (playing too soon) or lagging behind. Good thing I started with a simple one, I suppose. Baby steps, as the saying goes. 😉

Looking forward to the December challenge…happy holidays, everyone!

Hey, @dipanjan_ukulele14! Andrew goes a little deeper into that in his first live lesson (starts at about the 1:47 mark). Check it out here.

June 2018. Andrew’s arrangement of A Thousand Years came up as a YouTube suggestion. All the other videos I’d been watching up until that point were all strum/sing tutorials that were already getting boring.

I joined the basic membership right away but it was only two weeks before I committed to premium membership. The following month in July, I started to participate in the challenges, too.

Everything about RC101 is awesome. The structure, the forum and community, but also the variety in music, teachers, and lessons. I love all of it!

Other than my UAS that I’ve managed to get under control, I have 11 uke-themed shirts (4 of which are RC101). None personalized with my cat, unfortunately. Cute shirt, Lisa!! Happy belated birthday. 🙂

What I really want is a Uke Republic mug but the one I’ve been eyeing is $30 and I can’t bring myself to actually get it. I already have a mug obsession as it is and the last thing I need is another one, especially for $30. Haha. I wonder what shipping would be just for the mug. I’ll have to wait until I need strings or something so I’m not ordering just the mug by itself…

It’s been a while since I’ve last entered a challenge and the recent live lesson reminded me I need more exposure. Recording is my least favorite part of playing the uke, but I can’t expect to get better without feedback.

I’ve been known to skip challenges in the past because I’d rather avoid the anxiety on most days even if I’ve learned the songs.

    Anyway, here goes nothing…

P.S. – I really hate recording. My face says it all at the end.

@juliel – There are all walks of life at every level joining in the monthly challenges. The primary goal is to grow together as a community and also get feedback from the instructors on your individual playing. It’s fun! Once you get passed the recording nerves, you’d be surprised how much you learn from submitting. I hope you’ll join one day (no pressure because I totally get it)!

Congrats, Steven! The new course looks awesome and I’m so happy to see you back on the site. I’ve been a fan of you and your clean playing style since you joined RC101 and am totally stoked to see you’ve now become part of the great line-up of teachers.

Good job on the new recruit, Andrew. 😉

I checked out your YouTube channel (and subscribed). The whole playlist is soothing to listen to, but I particularly like Wake Me Up When September Ends as it’s always been a personal favorite (love that Miyagi-Do shirt you’re wearing in it, by the way). Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future! 🤙🏻
