kanae926ParticipantAwesome, Zukulele! Did you create your own ending (outro) for that? I love your take on it throughout the piece. Great job!
Andrew’s arrangement of Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years was the catalyst in my decision to join the RC101 premium membership. I can play up to the chorus (until the end of the first lesson video). It’s still not very good, but that’s as much as I’ve memorized. It’s not easy, but is such a pretty song.
kanae926ParticipantWow, Lisa! I didn’t know you had so many ukes! I’ve been wanting that long neck Kala soprano for a while. Nice acquisition!
Miztaken, I love the diversity in your collection. So cool! I’m glad I’m not the only one with acquisition syndrome. 😉
I currently have three (a soprano and two concerts), but I want at least 4 others I’ve been eyeing for the near future and that says something considering I’ve only been playing 4 months. LOL 😆 Not that having more ukuleles will make me a better player, but it sure makes it more fun!

kanae926ParticipantKevin, is that a KoAloha Opio (KTO-10) tenor? I’ve been drooling over the concert (KCO-10)…I want it so bad! It sounds really good! Keep on rockin’!
kanae926ParticipantOkay, so after watching the videos and reading the posts in this thread, I can happily say my harmonics are sounding better! I’m so grateful I can learn from others experiencing similar difficulties.
Thank you, Andrew! Your video reponses are so helpful in seeing what we aren’t doing quite right. I think it also may have something to do with recently getting a ukulele with a better setup and different strings, but I’m definitely noticing that I can’t get the same sound out of my cheaper concert ukulele.
Hooray for the little wins!
kanae926ParticipantIt’s nice the variety of ukes he compared (a whole gamut of woods/prices), but boy, he had a HEAVY plucking/strumming style. 😂
Rickey, if you have a ukulele store or instrument store with a decent stock to try, you should hold some to see what you like. Videos can give you specs and sound samples, but it won’t be the same as trying them in person.

kanae926ParticipantI’ve somehow managed to make my lovely new uke sound bad. 😂😂😂 🙈🙉🙊
My body sags a little at the end of the video (LOL). I’m still working on it.
kanae926ParticipantWhat a great video, Kay! Thanks for sharing it. These are my favorite kind to watch as they are so informational.
I love the look and sound of the mango wood, too. And the deciding factor for me was the sound sample video The Ukulele Site posts in the description of all their listed ukes. The tone is warm, but clear. 😍
kanae926ParticipantRickey, I happened to see this great video just last night talking about sizes and their benefits. It might help you decide. 😊
And yes, I believe what Andrew plays is a concert (Kanile’a K-1).
kanae926ParticipantYes, there are not only more frets on concerts and tenors, but each have longer necks (increasing spacing) so you have more room. Sopranos are good for children or adults with smaller hands because of the shorter reach.
The necks are wider at the nut on concerts and tenors, too. Something else to consider. There are super sopranos out there with the same neck length and amount of frets as a concert where you don’t have to compromise on the neck width while keeping the traditional soprano body size/sound. It has the range of a concert but sound of a soprano. Look into the Islander AS-4. It’s very afforable and has a roomy fret board.
As for setup, check out info/videos here.
kanae926ParticipantHappy birthday, Daisy! What a great present for yourself. It’s a good investment I’m sure you won’t regret. 😉
Nice playing, Lisa! I saw you playing Happy Birthday for someone else in an older post and I see a huge improvement! Way to go!! 👏🏻
kanae926ParticipantRickey, there are so many things I considered each time I bought my ukuleles. First one was a soprano Kala because it was affordable and small. I didn’t know what I liked yet or what to look for at the time.
Second one was a concert, but it was also a beginner bundle purchased at Amazon. The bigger size and more fret space was great until I grew out of that one too (within a couple months). I wanted something with a pro set up.
So here we are to my third ukulele. Still a concert, but I considered so many things:
– Wood (for tone, looks, laminate/solid top/solid wood)
– brands (mostly for pricing, but also for known consistency in quality control)
– size (do I want to try a tenor or stay a concert)
– Budget
– low g or stay high g (not critical since you can always restring if you don’t like it, but always nice to have an extra uke without having to restring your primary)I found it easiest to pick a place to shop from and pick from their available models. I shopped both Uke Republic and HMS (the ukulele site) before I made my purchase. You definitely want to pick a store that is known for their set ups. It is critical in a good sounding uke (in my opinion).
kanae926ParticipantWow, that’s impressive that you’re wanting to learn. I don’t personally know anything about being a luthier or even know a person who is one, but I bet you’d be able to discover a lot from just reading threads on this site: https://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/
You got me curious. Let us know how your endevour goes! Good luck. 🍀👍🏻

kanae926ParticipantI didn’t tell them I was with RC101 this time, but maybe I’ll drop them a note later when I buy my next one (planning on it being Low G). I love the high quality of their sample videos with every ukulele they carry.
I’M SO EXCITED.

kanae926ParticipantNot that a new ukulele is going to make me a better player or anything, but I’m going to wait until tomorrow to get my delivery to post a video. 😉
I’m hoping that it’ll be easier to play with a pro set up than my beginner ukuleles I got from Amazon. They have high action and some buzzing that I can do without. Although they’ve been okay to learn the basics on, I’m ready to for the real deal! I bought my new one from HMS (The Ukulele Site), so it should come with an AMAZING set up.
I. Cannot. Wait.

kanae926ParticipantCongrats, Kelly! I love that you’re the first ever RC101 member since 2014!! That’s a pretty special title. 😉
