Mad World – I was honestly second guessing my choice for this month’s challenge because it took me so long to get a handle on it. As much as I liked “Yellow Submarine”, I was thinking if I had chosen that one, I probably would have driven both myself and my husband “mad” before the month was out. You know what I mean – Yellow Submarine once in a while is ok, but over and over for a month – haha. At any rate, I know this Mad World can of course be better, but I was pleased I persevered with it. I felt like it was a little beyond me at first.

I’m probably slow to the game on this, but I wanted to pass on a positive observation about the on-screen player that is in RC101 – I think most people know about the ‘loop’ feature. I’ve noticed when you use ‘loop’, you also see a ‘focus’ pop-up with some options. I never bothered with ‘focus’ before because I thought, well – yeah, it’s a loop. But HEY – when you go in ‘focus’ mode, it removes all other measures from the screen. Something about that is mentally encouraging to me because it’s just the tiny section or set of bars you have selected. And you have a sense of accomplishment of completing the entire ‘focus’ bars. (I always felt like when looping, the rest of the song was taunting me because I could always see it looming out there – it was always there. Haha.) Anyway, that was a new website feature I enjoyed this month also.

I enjoyed everyone’s playing – wow some really awesome submissions! You guys are awesome!

@andrew – thanks for the feedback – makes perfect sense – I know exactly what you’re talking about on both points👍 (meant to post this under May, but couldn’t figure out how to delete from June 😉)

Wow @deadbuggy & @sakifelrosa, those were both really pretty. I feel so relaxed now after I’ve been playing “Clocks” for the last hour haha.

I have been working on “Clocks” this month. I must say it was pretty easy to memorize, but for me much tougher to play than it seemed like it should have been. That last section required some gymnastics that my fingers weren’t used to – haha. I count as a success though because I didn’t skip this song just because it had bar chords LOL 😉

Bravo everyone! Such great submissions again. So many great performances – wow, Red is the Rose is something I want to work my way up to (eventually) – so pretty. I didn’t post a recording this month, but I worked on Black Velvet Band, which was an interesting arrangement by Matt. It had a few of the dreaded barre chords, but I finally understand now the value of learning different ways to play a chord – setting you up to be in the best position for the next note(s). 👍 I wanted to give a shout out for that song as I only saw it performed a couple of times this month! I needed more time to make a recording I was happy with – and didn’t even have a cat attempting to distract me while playing – haha (liked that @jbmills07 🐱). Anyhow, I still learned something and had fun – Looking forward to seeing what the April options might be next!

I loved the open/any RC101 song challenge again. I went for another clawhammer song to build on my first time using this technique in last month’s challenge. I chose Christopher’s arrangement of “Cripple Creek”. I think it is deceptively simple at the beginning and the end, but then there is a crazy solo in the middle – I could have used another week on this – but here it is (@ 75% speed) and it was still fun. I can almost play the beginning and ending at 100% speed, but the solo is a long ways away from full tempo, so I recorded the whole thing with the 75% backing track. I especially like playing with these backing tracks. You play by yourself and you think -yeah, my timing is great, then the backing track says – REALLY?! You also learn to just keep playing if you make a mistake. Roll with it 🙂

I have enjoyed the variety of choices everyone has performed so far – very fun! Thanks all!

p.s. I figured out how to remove the background from a video – that was a cool trick this month too.

Yay! Choose your own RC song! I’m continuing the Clawhammer practice this month with Cripple Creek, arranged by Christopher. It sounded a little intimidating, but I looked at it again- actually simple chords without any “reaches”. Sounds awesome with the backing track. It’s a short month, so happy to have advance warning so I can start a little learning today 😁 👏👏

Wow this was a fun challenge and I enjoyed seeing the large variety of things everyone was working on. The challenge I chose was ‘clawhammer’. Starting from zero on this technique. I used the RC clawhammer course to understand the technique. For the song, I preferred to learn ‘Wildwood Flower’. It has many verses that just repeat, so I just did one run through. I enjoyed clawhammer and the song so much, I ended up buying a banjolele. 🙂 It just arrived last night, so I added a “take” of the same song with banjolele so you can hear the difference. There was some chatter about GP – I love that program and it is what I used to create the tab that I learned the song from. I created the tab using GP, but the arrangement is from Matt Stead. I just tabbed out the handwritten notes he had in his video. I attached an image of the GP arrangement in the post.

I think my next banjolele song will be Cripple Creek (from RC101). This instrument is just such a happy sound.
