I worked on something totally new for me – “triplet picking technique” – Etude #28. What a cool song and technique (thanks AJ for your piece). This was definitely a stretch song (literally in part of the song – haha). Not quite sure how to go about making it better. I think part of it is perhaps hand strength. (I gave up recording and just called it ‘done’ because my left hand/wrist was not happy with the repetitions – that and it’s Nov 29th haha). I know some notes weren’t clear. On the positive, I loved the helpful advice in the instructional video from Andrew that you don’t need to move everything in the left hand all at once – gradually build the chord – this made it much easier to get to new positions without losing pace.

I’d like to revisit this one in the future, but my left hand needs a break!

@marianne – wow that beautiful. I wouldn’t have thought to try it on the baritone. They both sound very nice.

I’m sorry for the loss of your work colleague. I could feel your emotions in your playing.

@the_bumble_bard – I getcha’! Only “weak” in the sense of not feeling quite ready to flex a bunch of new-skill muscles at that moment — and that’s totally okay. We all need breaks sometimes, and it takes wisdom (and self-awareness!) to know where our “gas tank” is at any given time. On Nov 2nd mine might be full, but who knows what sneaky things might siphon it off in the weeks to come! We do what we can, when we can. I always look forward to seeing what you come up with in your performances. ☺️

I can’t get Moondance out of my head. Next verse chorus is singing in my mind this morning…..”My mouth…it drools each time I see this gorrrr…geous UKE”. LOL.

I think I’m going to try and learn the tremelo / triplet picking skill in Etude #28. (Because then I could also try Malagueña one day – which I love). Promising myself to not wait until the end of the month this time. 😂.

(edited) definitely not waiting – just realized it’s a 6 page pdf!

In embracing the principle of “progress, not perfection”, here’s my Oct submission, “Moondance”. If we do a de-ja-vu sometime later to revisit a previously recorded song, I would probably choose this one. I didn’t practice as much as I wanted, but that just helps me know I can continue to improve it in the future.

This one was definitely trickier than I first though. It seemed like it would easy because the song is so repetitive, but it’s a fairly quick tempo (I recorded at 92%), has the dreaded bar chords, a funky rhythm, a chunk, a tricky stretch, then 2nd/3rd chorus which jumps up the fretboard with a fingering I found difficult (so I modified to omit string 4 in those sections just to get the sound out), it’s also longer than I’m used to playing so my brain gets a little tired (forgetting lyrics) and oh yeah, just singing (on key?) at the same time as playing to a long and fairly fast song with a funky rhythm. Shwoow – this was a challenge indeed!

FYI, when I prepared the video, I included the RC101 audio/video from the onscreen player to make it a little more interesting. I lowered the volume on the RC101 audio to just barely be able to hear the bass (Stephen) and then I ramped it back up when Evan’s solo part came in. Ashley’s voice is so lovely, but I purposely turned it all very low so you heard my voice instead of hers (yes, I would have rather heard her voice – haha).

@the_bumble_bard LOL – I hear ‘ya. I did that with Moondance. Printed and played it out one day, then….wow it’s October 28 now – oops. Not sure I’ll be able to learn this, but I’ll give it try! In any case, I can come back to it – a fun one.

So many things to like. Perhaps my fav is being able to sort for newest items first.

Hi All – This month I worked on Matt’s (less-complicated version of) “Drifting” because well, it’s a beautiful song and secondly – I’ve been wanting to play my baritone uke with something new. I appreciate that Matt gave us both versions of this dreamy & relaxing song. I hope to one day be able to get to the more advanced version. In the meantime, I worked on trying to intentionally play “freely” (with rubato – is that the right word?) – not sticking strictly to the precise/firm tempo. I realized that technique can make this type of song so dreamy. Here’s my take in the garden with a visit from the garden pollinators at the end.

I’m still experimenting with my wireless mic. I feel I might have it too close at the end of the strap as it is picking up all my strap noises (and using noise gate when I plopped it in the video editing software wasn’t quite doing what I wanted, so left the audio “au-natural”). I might try a version with the noise-cancelling turned on next time. You can hear how sensitive the mic is – picking up the little bee buzzes. 🙂

p.s. I appreciate those of you who take the time to go throw all the videos and make beautiful comment. I definitely watch most of the submissions, but I’m not able to comment as diligently as some of you all. Love you guys! Well done so far everyone!

Nice @Leb397 – way to go on the wireless mic. And you nailed the harmonics. ❤️

Yay @leb397 – Just listened to your Sep entry – good job! It’s easy isn’t it?! I need to do my Sep recording. I was contemplating going to the beach, but I don’t know – that might be weird – haha. (And I’d have to figure out how to place my phone / tripod etc – unless I found a rock in just the right spot.) Too much trouble – I’ve talked myself out of it. Backyard recording instead!

@marianne that was great, very expressive. I’ve been looking for an other Spanish style song. This is nice
