The_Bumble_BardParticipantWelp, that was incredible! Well done, @jass007!
The_Bumble_BardParticipantThat was so great, madz! I can’t get over how much the uke sounds like a video game from this era for some reason. But that was lovely! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantNever played one second of a Zelda game in my life (other than Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart–both of which I’m terrible at), but I agree with @leb397 that all these stories of nostalgia are so sweet and fun to read!
In my youf, I played PC games and DOS games, if anyone knows what that is. And Sega Genesis Disney games–The Lion King, Aladdin, and one with Mickey Mouse. And Jump! music games for piano. Good times.
Anyway, I pretty much learned this because it was stuck in my head anyway lol. Lovely chunes and lovely work by everyone!Β π
@Andrew, please omit my name from the prize drawing again, thank ye!
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@lisadmh, they weren’t obvious at all! I feel like we notice our own mistakes more than other people ever do. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@lisadmh, that was so lovely! I love that idea! I watched the whole thing and you didn’t really make many mistakes at all, especially for playing so long! Pretty impressive! Also, I feel like I need to go to the beach now, but not where I live. π
@surferjay, it’s Ukulele: RAW and Uncut… Sweet tunes on the beach. ππ ππNovember 7, 2022 at 6:09 pm in reply to: Nov 8, 2022 – Live Lesson: 3 Things I Learned From Playing Ukulele For 10k Hours #54616
The_Bumble_BardParticipantgi_gi_ , haha yes, I’m sure some people do view time spent as dollar signs (which arguably it is sometimes), but I agree: it’s all about the love of music. And this has been a great discussion. π
Taimane is becoming one of my ukulele heroes. She’s amazing. Confession: I sometimes impersonate her “uke dancing” to dispel anxiety before recording songs. π ππ
@recdog, if you can play classical music on guitar or uke on autopilot I feel like that’s quite the accomplishment. πThis entire discussion is probably way too many words to read during the live lesson, but if there’s time, Matt, can you please read the following quote from earlier:
Time is just a vehicle, man. Where will the driver go? What roads will they take, the scenic route or the freeway? Will they stop at Arbyβs for curly fries? #destiny, man.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@leb397, I meant to say earlier, I love the way you describe your experience of playing uke as being just for your own enjoyment and self-accomplishment. To me that’s a beautiful idea.
November 7, 2022 at 5:53 am in reply to: Nov 8, 2022 – Live Lesson: 3 Things I Learned From Playing Ukulele For 10k Hours #54604
The_Bumble_BardParticipantFor some reason, I dislike the idea of focusing too much on a specific number of hours as even a guideline for success–whether 20 hours or 10,000 (though I do get how it could be helpful in some ways). When you start out learning something, you might believe you’ll learn it quickly and it takes months or years; you might think a song or technique seems impossible and learn it quickly. Sometimes a time constraint can be good and push you in a good way, but I just don’t think learning or progress can be measured in hours… (Refrains from “Rent” musical references)
But I also see how having a set amount of time as an incentive or goal to practice consistently could be useful like you described, @smokealot.
Anyone who has taken the challenge to βmasterβ anything knows it takes committment and follow through. Show up everyday, have fun and one day you could actually shock yourself βΊοΈπ.
I gotta agree that our emotions could sabotage us or aid us in the process. To me itβs not so much about mastery but being consistent, following through and enjoying the journey. If you donβt have the, βI give upβ attitude you could accomplish so many great things for yourself.@gi_gi_ so much yes! I think about the “always something” approach to practicing and playing. Even if I only play for five minutes, I play every day. Almost. It is more about being consistent and enjoying yourself, agreed! Oh yeah and not giving up. π π₯Ίπ

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@gi_gi_ haha, yeah, good point! Who has that kind of time on their hands? (me) π₯Ίπ ππ
This is a great topic! Kinda like what @smokealot said: I feel there is no exact number of hours that will automatically make you a master, but it is also a great accomplishment to have spent that much time creating. That said, it seems like time isn’t the only factor: the resources you have, the quality of your practice, drive and inspiration seem just as important.
Time is just a vehicle, man. Where will the driver go? What roads will they take, the scenic route or the freeway? Will they stop at Arby’s for curly fries? #destiny, man.
Anyway, looking forward to this one! π

The_Bumble_BardParticipantThanks to @Andrew and @Stephen for taking the time to write out such great, detailed feedback! It’s one of the best parts about these challenges to me. So many insightful nuggets o’ info to be had!
Also, the influx of entries the last few days of this challenge was crazy to behold, lol. Never been part of one of these Kanileβa challenges before.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for all of the thoughtful feedback and encouragement! YOU guys rock! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, not familiar with that arrangement of Canon in D but that sounds really intriguing!
The mini looper arrived and it was even minier than expected. I was like, “is it in there?” π But that’s also good because I’m running out of room for these things…
I’m hoping I can start to try it out on Sunday because this weekend is busy for me. As every weekend has been this month. Er last month. And this month. I don’t know what day it is…
Thank you kindly! I can’t wait to give it a whirl and I’ll show anything that’s not too sad here! π Maybe even my first attempt at it because that will probably be amusing. π Hope you get a chance to post what you’re working on if you have time!
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@sir_anzalot, that’s such a good one and I couldn’t agree more with that!
I love classical music and there’s often a huge difference in the complexity of it compared to modern music (especially pop music but the Beatles are slightly more involved than say Katy Pary). I’m sure there are exceptions, like maybe jazz music, but to me it’s the difference between a Rembrandt and Andy Warhol. Not sure everyone would agree with that, lol, and that may be a bit extreme but your examples are such a good illustration of this. Bach is also crazy; there’s just so much material to learn and there are often only slight variations between measures.
I also was reminded of this same thing this month while learning Lacrimosa. I’m actually still working on it and probably will for some time before it’s close to perfect.
If you want to see crazy classical music you should go look up Chopin, unless you know off-hand. That man was a psychopath as a composer. π
There’s this but the first one isn’t crazy. The second one is:
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, supposedly it’ll be here Wednesday, tomorrow! There’s one specific song I’ve wanted to try from a movie since I’ve started playing uke but it involves playing on opposite ends of the fretboard for the melody / harmony the way I wanted to. I also don’t have an arrangement for the song so we’ll see how that goes. Ohhhhh yesss! I’ll have to look for that one on here! Then I can know one neato song right out of the gate! I hope you keep posting your loops to inspire gi_gi_ and I! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, yes, so many musical terms sound highly questionable. I won’t even say what they are though because this site is family friendly. Also I shouldn’t have brought that up at all. ππ₯Ίπ
I’ll defs give that a read, thank ye! π I am going through the lessons here but it takes me a really long time and often multiple tries to imbibe information. For me it really helps to have the visual of a concept in action like in the video lessons otherwise my brain can just go blank… Well, more blank. ππ
Oh yes I think I know what you mean. Like the modes that Matt talked about in one of his videos. I’m starting with the beginner’s course here but I’m guessing that’s covered in the theory course. I’ll get there eventually. Maybe that’s something I can practice with the looper. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipantAwwww thank you all! I feel the 𧑠and 𧑠you all too! π And thank you @robinboyd, you were the one I thought I may have offended but you have no idea what I’m talking about so we cool! ππ I just need to calm down like a lot, but sometimes the ol’ brain goes against you and I appreciate the reassurances nonetheless. ππ
@gi_gi_ those look so neat! I’m definitely going to look through those, thank you!! I love Ukulele Wales, she’s so insightful and cute, I watched some of her videos talking about electric ukuleles when I first won the one from here! At some point I think I would want to try a more elaborate set up but it’s definitely good to start out simply. π
@surferjay, that is pretty neat that you’re doing that but how does the a minor scale align with those chords? From what I remember from videos I’ve watched, don’t you have to omit certain notes at times to suit what chords you’re playing? I’m still working through the lessons even though I know a fair amount from playing piano, the arrangement of the notes on the fretboard is what I struggle with most. Pianos are more orderly and linear. Ukes are definitely cuter, more spirited, and quirkier though. π -
