The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, hahaha sounds like a plan! π But since I don’t really have the authority or knowledge to talk about………….. most things, let alone ukulele, I’ll continue to be the bumbling sitcom side character on the (hypothetical) podcast that I seem to be in the rest of my life. ππ Hahaha that happened to me once too and I was like, “girl, you done now.” But yeah it’s all good. π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, haha! Well, I found it funny. I’m quite fond of British humour and all humor, like most humans that exist. π Normally I try to reply to other people while interjecting my own foolishness, but I failed that time then felt awkward, like I was interrupting. I don’t want to assume too much, but I feel like you and I both struggle with some social anxiety after we write here. Well, I struggle with that in general, in life. It’s all okay though. π
@gi_gi_ that’s so true! Sometimes it makes all the difference in the world just to have one person encourage you. That’s how I’ve felt so much from this site from the instructors and you, my faraway uke friends. I’m grateful for that. π₯°
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@cinichol, I love that so much! That is such a beautiful thing to experience, or re-experience, just the pure joy of making music and expressing yourself that way. ππ
Hehehe, uke-piphany! So stupid. π Going about my day now–on occasion–I think about how “uke-” can be added as a prefix or pun, and how “-lele” can act as a suffix. I ask myself, “will it ‘-lele’?” π I literally never in my wildest dreams thought I would become this obsessed with the ukulele, but I’m glad it happened, and I owe this site and the people here for 90% of what I know and can do now on uke. The ukulele community as a whole is only made up of wonderful, wonderful people in my experience.
I thought you might appreciate that tangent about weird portmanteaus and puns since it says you’re a creative writing instructor on your profile? I love writing… Obviously. π
Anyway, glad you appreciated this thread; there were some pretty dang good replies, including yours! Lovely indeed! Thank you! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, @gi_gi_ this is all so neat! It’s really cool to see that the scales all connect–and really cool to know that you can take the same shapes and move them up two frets to transpose. I know a bit about scales and intervals from playing piano, but my struggle has been understanding how those scales are laid out on the uke. But it really just seems to be a matter of learning the scales and seeing the patterns like you illustrated.
Another goal I have for this coming year is to finish a good chunk, if not all, of the courses on here. I keep getting distracted (…by myself mostly). π π
Also, I found both your posts funny in the live lesson thread but forgot to react there, then I felt too awkward to react later–but now I am. I’m neurotic… ππ
Anyway, thank you so much for filming that, @surferjay! ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, so, to say a bit more, I actually did get as far as learning the first pattern of the C major scale that you just filmed, but like @gi_gi_ , I am intrigued to know the five patterns and how they connect. It looks like that might be covered in the theory course on here which is good but I’m just curious what it would look like if you played all five patterns together straight through.
Oh, and the singing for me is questionable. It’s not going to be like when @robinboyd burst out of nowhere with his golden Phantom voice. π I may try a few things that way, but I wanted to add in some percussion through the mic and try using my acoustic ukes with the looper through the mic. It may take some doing to figure that out (for me) since clearly I’m a tech genius, ππ and not sure if it will work, but I want to try it!
Thank you for your well thought out posts and for posting videos in these discussions. Much appreciated, friend! π
December 9, 2022 at 11:47 am in reply to: December 13, 2022 – Live Lesson: 3 Ukulele Goals To Set For 2023 #55008
The_Bumble_BardParticipantI hoped this would be the topic this month, so I tried to give this a good, solid think.
My 3 (main) uke goals for 2023:
1. Strummin’. Learn to strum better than a poorly trained capuchin monkey.
2. Play uke in front of others more often, and in other places besides my chamber of solitude and secret melodies.
3. Create a chord melody that can be classified as “neat.”
Also… Start a blog, so that all ‘this’ wayward energy can go there. ππ
Thank you so much for a crazy fun and enlightening year! Gaaaaaaeeeel! Oh sorry wrong page …
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, please do share the five patterns and how they connect! I’m very interested to see that. I’ll be able to reply a bit more this eve. This week has just been pretty cra’y for me. π ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipantI “3rd” the request for another looper-based song and for it to perhaps be included in a future challenge! Thank you, @Andrew and Co! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@gi_gi_, it’s defs a great idear to ask if more looper songs could be added and or perhaps included in a monthly challenge as an option one month (though I think they did include Sirius in one?)! Ha yes I was thinking the same thing as @surferjay that we’re the only three with confirmed loopers. ππ π
I asked Andrew about that early on when I joined the site, and they did have one challenge with original songs. I hope they do that again because that’s something I like to do too. But that could maybe be more freestyle like Jay does, though I can’t do that yet. Still learning the scales from various sources including here and one of Matt Dahlberg’s videos. π Because it’s really hard for me to learn without physically seeing something done, as opposed to just reading the tabs for scales.
I defs want to try that chord combo you got there, @surferjay! It sounded really, really nice. Have you ever plugged a microphone into your looper / amp, out of curiosity, while using the looper? I have a microphone now. ππ ππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@surferjay, that was so, so good! I have more rambling to do later but I’ve run out of time for now. ππ

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@leb397, awwww, thank ye for the encouragement! It still needs a lot of work because I find the chord changes really tricky still but I think Matt said in the lesson that was part of the intentional challenge of the arrangement. I think part of what gives me anxiety when recording is worrying about being perfect so that’s why I just included the bumbles. π Your take was so dang good! And you prove your tech-savviness once again with the video ending/editing! π
Everyone else’s entries so far have been incredible! So fun to see!

The_Bumble_BardParticipantThe fact that Chopsticks was included as an option for this challenge amuses me too much. π A ubiquitous tune on pianos, maybe soon it’ll be uke-biquitous. Good jorb on that, @gstriph! π
@Andrew, thank you so much for that kind feedback! And thank you for saying you liked the variation. I am more used to randomly adding fingerpicking to songs than making difficult chord changes, so hopefully if I slow down, like you said, and get that part right the rest will fall into place. Thank you kindly! πDecember 2, 2022 at 6:44 pm in reply to: Participate in the December 2022 Member Challenge β WIN $6,000 Kanileβa #54936
The_Bumble_BardParticipantI AM A PREMIUM MEMBER
@ukandrea, that was so dang good! I love that the uke has a hat! π
@deadbuggy, that was so, so good! I am in actual awe, madam!ΒI wanted to try to tackle one of them Nutcrackers but that may be more of a “Christmas in July” experience for me. π They’re pretty daunting.Β
Instead I tried God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen–also daunting, but possible–and thought I would share an especially imperfect take. I will still work on it and try to perfect it (and hopefully can post an update later) but here’s where it is right now.Β Sorry that it’s an oppressively quiet recording. I scored a new mic on Cyber Monday, so hopefully that’ll help with that, lol.
Just to clarify, I said, “oh shoot” midway through the video and “eesh” at the end. Didn’t want that to be misconstrued…
I know I have brought this up often, but I’m so, so, SO grateful for the people of this community and especially for the instructors here who are so gracious, inspiring, and helpful. Joining here has completely transformed my view of playing ukulele and taken my abilities from playing basic chords to playing flippin’ Lacrimosa (at an okay level π) in a relatively short time. I’ve learned so much, and will be forever grateful to the people here.
Happy Holidays to all y’all! πππβ€οΈπππ
The_Bumble_BardParticipantSo good! He did such a great job and the ending is so cute! Keep it up! π
The_Bumble_BardParticipant@leb397, you hide the struggle pretty well! π Yes, tweens and younger are probably the most tech-savvy of them all. I’m pretty sure my two-year-old niece is more tech-savvy than I am. π Thank you kindly! Yes, December. π³
@gi_gi_ yes! I wanted to ask @Andrew to perhaps create more looper-related material at some point! -
