Hi Friends! This month, I chose to work on playing Amazing Grace using a slide. I’ve wanted to learn this song for a long time, and was so pleased to find this arrangement by Fred Sokolow for slide ukulele, using open G tuning. I’ve enjoyed all of your submissions…such talent around here! 🙂

1) Execution: I will be working on using a slide.
2) Application: The song selection is “Amazing Grace”, arranged for slide ukulele by Fred Sokolow.

Happy Holidays, Everyone! Greensleeves has always been a favorite of mine, so that is the song I chose for this month. I love that our community is supporting Ukulele Kids Club…music is a wonderful language that speaks to the heart, heals, and that everyone should have an opportunity to be a part of. One of the great things about Rock Class 101 is that it offers an array of genres, which provides opportunities to identify personal musical paths and passions. So, thank you to Andrew and all of our wonderful teachers!
For this month, I chose Matt’s live lesson “3 Ukulele Goals to Set for 2025”. These included Refresh and Refine, Discover and Explore, and Challenge and Grow. Last month, I began exploring playing blues with a slide. I continued this journey with Rollin’ and Tumblin’ by Hambone Willie Newbern, and based my playing on YouTube videos by Fred Sokolow, daddystovepipe, and Michael August.
This month’s submissions were stunningly good – I enjoyed listening to all of them! 🙂

@leb397 Great work on Cripple Creek! I know how hard that song is…although I didn’t post, it was the song I worked on last month, and between the clawhammer, rapid note changes, and tempo, it was a real challenge for me.@grannieannie Thanks for your comment! Grab a slide and check it off your list…you’ll love it! What a pretty piece Spanish Romance is…very nice. And the dogs are a delightful addition…mine like being serenaded, too!

@leb397 Thank you! I really like that sound, too, and loved playing around with a slide. I might have watched almost every slide ukulele video on YouTube haha. It’s a lot of fun! 🙂
I had tons of fun learning this piece. This version of Betty and Dupree, a traditional blues tune, was shared in a Ukulele Magazine article by Fred Sokolow.

@grannieannie I love your added personal challenge, going with your first recording. I always get a little stressed when it’s time to record, and then make mistakes I wouldn’t normally make in practice. And I usually end up doing a million takes (and often one of my earlier versions was the best anyway). Your idea also lends to appreciating music in the moment, instead of chasing after an elusive perfection that is maybe less authentic anyway. Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
