Second update:
I’ve basically got the arrangement done and transcribed (with minor changes still occurring) and am working on the incidentals and getting comfortable playing the piece. I’ll soon update the score with the changes I’ve made. I seem to be using a lot of hammers onto different strings and drones but it seems to suit this piece.

Hi,
Here is my first update.
I hunted up a few traditional versions of Farewell to Music and entered the basic notes into my Notion iPad app and then transposed it to the key of F which I like the sound of for this.
Then I worked with my uke and the app to decide a basic tab that might work. Then, once I had something at least reasonably playable, I pencilled in the extra notes for the doublestops and chords on the printed score as I worked out what sounded good, adding the changes to Notion periodically and reprinting.
By that time it was clear that I’d over-stretched Notion — it began to put the doublestop and chord notes far from where I was trying to enter them. So I exported the score to musicXML and imported it into Musescore on my PC. I hadn’t used this program recently so I updated it first. The XML imported the treble clef and tab beautifully. It took a couple of evenings of fiddling but I figured out how to update both the tab and notes and even got the note stems to show in my tab.
Now, I’m working with the score I’ve printed out, learning to play the music and pencilling in changes as I go which I’ll add periodically into the Musescore program, reprint and continue.
I’m finding the piece works well on both high and low G as I’d hoped.

This is what I’m planning to do.
1) Execution – I’d like to pull together a ukulele arrangement of Carolan’s Farewell to Music and learn to play it comfortably. I’m a high intermediate level player. Using Notion on the iPad, I’ll pull together a bare-bones version of the sheetmusic and work out best string and fingering to use as well as chording and ornamentation etc. plus the uke fingering style to use. I’d prefer if it could be played passably in both low and high G ukuleles. I’ll work on it daily for anywhere from half an hour to an hour. Once the arrangement is basically completed, I’ll work more on my playing of it, tweaking as I go.
By end of month I’d like to have an arrangement I like and be able to play it comfortably from memory.
2) Application – I’ll be reviewing similar pieces I’ve liked to determine chording, fingering, etc.
3) Evaluation – I’ll be keeping track of the arrangement and hope to have it mostly completed within a week and then work on the playing and tweaking, with memorization coming at least by a week before the end of the month.

Thanks, Andrew! It’s a lovely piece. The rhythm issues toward the end were me remembering a bit late what came next but should smooth out soon.

This month I tried Merry-Go-Round of Life. I’d like to have worked on it a bit longer (it was especially rough in the third part) but there is Covid in the house and though I’m isolating, I can’t be sure I won’t come down with it before month end.

This month I worked on Syncopated Speed Picking. I tried the fingerpicking as well as the pick methods but found the pick sounded best on this uke.
