My best effort at present – lots of mistakes. I’ve been playing it OK for weeks now, but I just seem to tense up when I’ve got a rolling camera! It’s hard to do all those slides when tense!!! I find the hammering on and sliding at the top of the neck really tricky, but I think I’m getting there. Fun challenge, thanks Andrew.February 1, 2018 at 4:07 pm in reply to: Participate in the February 2018 Member Challenge – Blues Themed! #15536
lisamccParticipantNice challenge Andrew thank you…. fancying a bit of a boogie! (although not advanced, it may be a shuffling boogie… time will tell )- I’m also very keen to get started on Havana and feel I may be driven to vibrato tomorrow! – so much to play, working is getting in the way!!! Like the tip about World play your ukulele day Alastair and it would be rude not to join in! (although alarmingly, when I looked this up, it appears to share the same day as ‘national working naked day’ No posting videos tomorrow then!) 😉

Small technical problem so this is audio not video….. it’s very very stumbling with mistakes. I need another week on it, but it’s a massive improvement from my non-slapping, non-strumming self!January 31, 2018 at 12:40 pm in reply to: Participate in the January 2018 Member Challenge – You Decide What To Work On! #15485
lisamccParticipantHey, my target for this month was to improve strum/drum/slap – and to do this through sultans of swing, but I became distracted with this lesson and added it to my target, which (amongst other things like a stupid amount of mock exam marking) has slowed my progress of my first target. My Sultans of swing is getting there and needs another week which is a bit frustrating but I’ll upload where I’m up to later…

lisamccParticipantHappy New Year to everyone! Thanks for another nice inspiring challenge Andrew. I know this is only post 8 – but I’m also going to be working on Sultans of swing right along with you Lyndall!!!
1) Execution; I have a definite leaning towards fingerpicking and have really struggled to mix it up and strum a little and do the backbeats…. for the challenge that had Mr Sandman, I was also trying I’m yours, but really struggled with it. In fact, I’ve got a whole pile of tunes that I want to work on that have this backbeat, so hopefully, by focusing on that, I should open up some doors!!! Another problem is also ‘run-away fingers’ so I need to work on making my performance more steady (I do use a metronome to keep myself in check – but didn’t take it away with me at Christmas) I have been playing ukulele for 1 year. My practice schedule: I have to get a ferry to work (CAR ferry – nothing public folks – not at the busking stage yet!!) I always practice both to and from work in my car, ignoring raised eyebrows of neighbouring cars and trucks…. I then practice in regular slots in between marking/planning at night (I’m a high school teacher)
2) Application – I’m going to work on Sultans of Swing. I’m not sure whether I’m going to get to the ‘full memorisation’ situation by the end of the month as it seems quite a long piece and is at level 4….but I would like to get the backbeat sorted, even if I’m still reading the music.
3) Evaluation – I’ll try and review once a week (I’m sure that patient long suffering family and co-workers will give me feedback too!)
Bring it on!!!

lisamccParticipantThanks Andrew, really helpful advice…thank you. I was really aware of galloping fingers but just couldn’t slow down… a bit like losing control running downhill! I’ll try and even myself out. I left my metronome at home, but that usually helps… I also get really nervous recording which is ridiculous as I can do lots of retakes..last month at one point I was playing Mr Sandman at club remix speed every time I turned on the camera! This has been a great challenge Andrew…. thank you 🙂

lisamccParticipantThanks Andrew – I really appreciate that. I’m loving being part of the Rockclass 101 community and you are doing a fantastic job in teaching all these cool songs and techniques and being so motivating. My playing would not be making this progress without you.

lisamccParticipantWhenever ANYONE questions the ‘coolness’ of the ukulele, I just pull up Taimaine’s TED performance and I don’t need to say any more! I love her style. Her ukulele just seems to merge with her and become her ‘voice’. It’s pure musical and artistic expression. I saw also when I was lucky enough to see BB King play live. It’s very special. Taimaine is the queen of the ukulele!

lisamccParticipantI’m attempting I’m yours next – that’s a big challenge for me – as I seem to favour picking and that strumming is wild!!! Very transferable though – so I need to sort that out!

Here’s my attempt at Mr Sandman and the first time I’ve managed to post DAYS before the deadline date (in the past I have even been known to google the time difference…)
I did attempt some dynamics to get more feeling into it, but parts may be too quiet for my laptop mic (particularly with buses and washing machines interrupting my recording session!)
I think I normally play this a bit clearer – but I seem to really get nervous when I record myself – even when I know that I can do hundreds of takes… so for the benefit of my family, I’m going to move on to another song now!!! -
