This month’s challenge is super fun – an opportunity for creative and constructive auto-analysis at any and every level! Thanks RC101!
1) Execution
I consider myself an intermediate player aspiring/pushing to become a seasoned/proficient intermediate player by continuing to work on expression and feel, especially in fingerpicking, which to me is the most telling sign that someone is at that more advanced level.I’ve also always been mesmerized by how cool flamenco and Spanish style picking/strumming is. Separately, I find it really impressive when I see/hear people doing harmonics successfully. It both looks and sounds cool.
This is all to say that I am interested in learning a new picking technique – the triplet picking technique and then applying it to something like Malagueña for this month’s challenge. Malagueña brings all of feel, Spanish style playing, and harmonics (if I take that route on a couple of instances) into one beautiful and addicting composition.
My plan is to start off by studying through Taimane’s video or Matt’s lessons on the Triplet picking technique (EP011). I will practice daily until I feel I have mastered it – where it feels natural vs something I have to constantly think about executing. In parallel, I will review Rasgueado and Picado, and continue to practice nailing/polishing my harmonics (right now I am at a hit-or-miss situation with the latter 😂).
2) Application:
When those are down, I will start learning Evan’s version of Malagueña, taught by Andrew. As the month goes, I will make sure that I am playing it with expression and feel.3) Evaluation:
The end goal: by the end of the January, I am comfortable playing it with all these parameters, by memory.

I was torn between Merry-Go-Round of Life and Always With Me for this month. I chose the first at first but then upon starting to learn it on my baritone, I quickly realized that it was actually impossible to play on the baritone given the enormous stretches and the distances on the fret board 😀
Always With Me was a big challenge on the baritone too as it made section C much harder and I also had to take the liberty to rewrite/interpret some of the melody and harmony notes so that it works with the low G without ringing too far off from the actual tune. Not very satisfied with the take (Section C is obviously weaker) but it is what it is given the constraints I accepted to set.

Here is my version of the Minor Blues Jam.
I wanted to record it with the accompaniment track but fretting the 5th on the baritone while going all the way up the neck sounded tinny and was uncomfortable, rather play it without a capo!Thanks a lot @Andrew!
Ok so I could not pass the opportunity to give the Funk Jam a shot seeing it’s for baritone, but that was definitely a high reach for my skill level 😭 I took on the challenge because I do love rhythm and syncopation, even if keeping up with the fingering and fingerboard surfing is tough and for more advanced players. @Andrew what a lovely funky and fun-to-play piece! Thank you!

Thanks a lot @evapaju, @dianna and @otzepeng! 😊 I am lucky that this ukulele has such a sweet and deep tone.
@dianna, no it’s strung as a regular baritone ukulele. Basically what I do is while I am learning the song, I put the capo on 5 so I can follow with lesson and play along with the video, and then when I feel I have it down, I remove the capo and play counting from fret 1. Just means that I am playing the tunes in a lower key.
