@Andrew – so funny that you should ask that ‘cuz I just finished another video of the song and planned on uploading it. This was my 10 take and the best. I kept in my major blunder where I restarted in the middle section. This time I plugged into the iRig adapter then just into my iPhone and the sound was pretty good still. My camera angle is NOT great, sorry🤨

@Andrew – thanks! I got out some old equipment that I need to start using again. and Garage Band has more than enough variety for me. I don’t have the time to learn/use more difficult recording software! My Lanikai concert has the EQ so I plugged into the iRig adapter, straight into my phone, then transferred to my Mac laptop. I used one of their acoustic filter settings. Now for technique- I have trouble getting clear technique the measures w/ fret 14-12-17 playing. I had it down in practice but not when recording and trying to stay in time. Any other advice other than keep working on it? 🤪

So many great songs to learn this month and so many wonderful performances!!
I picked Summertime Swing which is a fun happy tune written by Andrew and taught by Matt, thanks guys!! I wanted to record outside to get the summer vibes going but it has been sooo hot here that I had to wait till 8pm to go out in my yard! Well, I started to lose the light and get bit by bugs! I plugged by Uke into an iRig iPhone interface and was recording audio in Garage Band 🙄, trying to use equipment and experiment😵‍💫. Before I got eaten alive or irritated the neighbors, I went inside and continued to record audio in Garage Band. I had a little fun with the video and was able to sync the very last part with the last video I recorded. Enjoy!
I will keep working on this nice tune and use it as a “pocket” song 😝.

Ok… so many mistakes… but I have had fun trying to learn this Bass (Han) Solo Star Wars theme music! (see what I did there?😜) But I am OUT OF TIME! I made a lot of progress these last couple days, I will keep working on it!

I wanted to work on U-Bass so I chose EP008- Bossa Nova U-Bass with Stephen. I only got up to 60% speed. I recorded my practice session yesterday, and decided to use this cut for my entry, due to the month almost gone and I have been busy with work and had limited practice time.
I am a newby on Bass and need lots of work on technique (buzzing notes😬). I’ll keep working on it and see if I can get faster AFTER I get my technique and timing better. 😜
I also need to get out the recording equipment that I have and learn how to use it. 🙄

I chose “Red Is The Rose” which I first started to learn last year, March 2024.
I have improved my technique much but I still have a long way to go to get up to speed. I also found myself still dependent on the sheet music. I kept making mistakes and I took at least 30 videos!😜 I was finally getting better but needed a break. After the break, I somehow recorded in “slow-Mo” setting 🙄- 4 videos like that! So I had to go back to my “best” video from before the break but had to cut a few mistakes out. and I forgot to lift my pinky off the 5th fret toward the end! If I get a chance tonight, I might try to play it again… maybe with my Baritone Uke w/ octave Tenor strings.

I’m excited to have another chance to revisit a song that I tried before. Last year in March, we were doing Irish songs and I was learning “Red is the Rose”. I worked on it and was making a nice start but couldn’t get an entry done in time to post. (I attached a screenshot of my post about NOT posting!) I found some practice videos of me working on it. This is the perfect month to pick it back up and hopefully get farther along on mastering “Red is the Rose”!

Oh yeah, almost forgot, I will work on memorizing 4 measures at a time and once memorized, play with more feel and dynamics. I also want to learn the singing version of the song.
    Happy Ukeing-

Here is my version of “Daybreak” by Andrew H. I really like this song with the open chords and playing technique but I will need more time on it!
I only had the last week or two to work on this due to my daughter having a baby
and he had to be in NICU for almost 2 weeks! He has been home and thriving for a week now🥰
This strumming song with the individual notes is challenging. After spending an hour or 2
trying to get a clean take using the thumb to pick and strum and holding on the body of the uke like Andrew showed, my best take ended up NOT being one where I held the body! So I didn’t get as many isolated up notes on the “A” string but I think I kept a steady beat with only a couple of gaps. I’m still having trouble getting back up to the 9th fret 🙄
    Thanks Andrew and RockClass 101!

@The_Bumble_Bard I appreciate all your encouragement to everyone! I am not that vocal. I really enjoy watching every entry as I’m able, but don’t take the time to comment. I’ll try to be more vocal. I really enjoy your entry, you made leaps and bounds of improvement in playing and confidence!

@jbmills07 – dear Justin, my 💔heart breaks 💔for you. 😭😿 I’m so sorry for your loss but thankful you got to play that for her. I am pretty sure she heard you. When I got home from work today, I was ready to make a recording of my song and I saw your post but I knew I couldn’t watch it before I recorded my song- because I never would have got thru it. After I did my song, I went out to dinner with my family. I just now watched your video upon returning home. 😭 I love your heart man! May God hold Regina in his hands, relieve her pain. May God hold your heart 💔 as you grieve her.

Here is my entry, “Dream a Little Dream”, I did the best I could to memorize but it’s not perfect! But I did feel like I was playing music! I will continue to work on this and perform for a live open mic in February.

here is my progress… 😬 I have a few more days!!!

BTW- I’m working on a new arrangement, memorizing 3 string chords and lyrics. my goal is to play the full arrangement with intro and outro riff. I’m NOT there yet but there is hope for Friday!
There is a solo section but I may just play chord arpeggios in that section or just skip it. I am no where near close to learning the solo part.

    Happy New Year!
BTW- it’s still the 15th in California 😜

    1) Execution – last week, I just started learning/working on an arraignment of “Dream A Little Dream” taught by Perry Stauffer of Starlight Ukes. This arraignment uses 3 string chords which makes these Jazz chords a bit easier to tackle. I have tried to learn this tune a few years ago but couldn’t master it. Since then, I have identified some issues that have kept me from retaining what I am trying to learn. 1). Memory. 2) short amount of time to play the Uke. I believe my playing/musicianship ability is halted at Beginning/Intermediate and I’d like to improve that. My goal is to memorize the chords, song progression/arraignment and the lyrics. My goals are to play and sing the song by the end of the month without relying on the lead sheet. Later I want to be able to play the whole arraignment with the intro, outro and lead/solo part included.

    2) Application – I will set aside time at least 5 days a week to memorize the chords and arraignment first, then the lyrics. I will start with 4 measures at a time. Learning lyrics, I will go verse by verse and use key words in each verse to remember which words come next.

    3) Evaluation – I will evaluate myself week by week. I will test myself by doing some “practice” recordings. I don’t know if I will post progress videos along the way, but I will definitely post by the end of the month showing my progress.
    Cheers
