Here is a Premium Member Blue Moon update. Still a ways to go. Someone quipped…”You’re going to go along way in this Ukulele pursuit, Do you know why?…..Because, you have a long way to go.”

Excellent work by all you musicians/artists out there. BRAVO.

Andrew you seem to know what participants need and want. For the past couple weeks I have been revisiting many of the RC101 pieces that I worked on in 2024. I was checking to see if I can still play them -from memory-correctly and fluently. Turns out… No ..not really. I have dusted a few of them off and they are refreshed in my memory.
The piece I will develop and improve will be “Blue Moon” that I played in the October ’24 challenge.I found that while I had the tune memorized last October I cannot now perform it start to finish in front of others. That is the main goal.
James Hill mentioned this thought…Amateurs play a piece enough times so that they can play it right, Professionals play the piece enough so that they can’t get wrong.

For “Blue Moon” the goals will be:
    – play the piece as true to the lesson instructions as possible, including correct fingerings and strumming.
    – play the pulloffs as true pulloffs and letting the second tone be loud and clear without picking it.
    – smooth out some of the weak and sloppy sections and transitions.
    – be cognizant of the Chord progression being used and as well as chord variation (i.e. C6 instead of C )
    – Be able to fit the lyrics into the arrangement. (Not as straightforward as I would have thought)
    – Watch “Werewolf In London”
    – Ultimately, be able to perform this version as a performance piece with Confidence.

Onward and Upward, thanks for the inspiration from you, your staff and all the Participants.

    Progress Update…January Challenge Completed.
The Music Theory & jamming Course was completed on time. I needed a bit more time for the A7 Blues Solo.
The Course is worth the time invested:
Strum Patterns, Chord Progressions, C Scale Patterns, Solos in Am and C, Chord Theory and Variations, A7 Blues Arpeggios, Solos (EP005,EP006 and EP002) and much more.
Congratulations to all for all of your dedication, hard work and practice. UKE ON!

    Week 3 Progress Report.
LOTS OF SCALES!! Many hours of practice using C MAJ up and down the fretboard. Am Pentatonic and C major Pentatonic. The EP 0006 Solo over and over (and over) I have it pretty good @ 90% to date.
I have completed Module 3 Unit 2 (Solo Analysis).

I was hesitant to begin the Unit 3.2 because of Andrew’s criteria…1) know the Solo “without thinking” and 2) “memorize the Scale patterns”. I felt it was time to move on and do understand the Analysis. Now…how to apply that knowledge…hmmmm.

    @Andrew
The lick meme compilation was too funny. Loved it. Now I will try to learn it.
Solos to emulate: George Harrison – “Something” Jake S – “A Place in the Sun” Aldrine G – “Stand By Me” Andrew A – “A Duet From the Heart” (got that one down)

    Week 2 Progress Report:
Most of this past week was spent on Module 3 Unit 1 of

An Introduction to Music Theory & Jamming

    That Unit

Approach 1: Soloing in a Scale (FREE LESSON)

involves learning the C Scale in 5 patterns that relate to the Forms learned in Module 2. It is still unclear to me how those patterns relate to the Associated Form but I am sure that will come. It took the entire week to practice and “call out” Scale degree while playing the notes. The Unit also clarifies The C major and A minor pentatonic scales. Thanks for that!

I have moved on to the next Unit (M3U2)

Analyzing Concept Lesson EP006: Soloing with Major and Minor Pentatonics

These concepts are not new to me but I need exactly what this course offers. When I try to create solos in a Jam I am unsure and have little direction for what notes to play. I can already tell that learning these scales and patterns will provide a deeper understanding of the fretboard and tonal relationships inside a Major or Minor Scale. This will lead to solos use notes that follow the chords of the progression.

Only 14 days left in the month. I don’t know if I will complete the course but that is not important. The learning that has already been realized is a big jump. Grateful for this program. UKE ON!

    ALOHA,
    JANUARY CHALLENGE…..

EXECUTION: In January I will complete as much of the RC101 Course “Introduction to Music Theory and Jamming” as possible. An intermediate player,I began the Course 3 days ago, completed Module 1 and am in the middle of Module 2. I will go through the 3 modules Theory/Rhythm/Lead in order. A minimum of 1 hour daily will devote to playing/practicing the course skills and additional time for course reading and comprehension.

APPLICATION: The Course is a guided curriculum. I will execute the associated Concept Lessons (0002,0006 etc.) as I progress through the course. I will provide weekly updates about new learning on the RC101 website.

EVALUATION: The end goal will be to complete all modules. I wish to be able to play the tune “Stand By Me” with solos that follow the chord progression…To be able to ADD TO THE MUSIC.

Perhaps too aggressive for one Month, but I will give it a go and get as far as I can.

@Andrew – Thanks for the important feedback. I appreciate the “8×10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows on the back of each one explaining what it was about”..LOL.

Seriously, you have absolutely identified an area of left hand technique I need to address. I did go through the Proper Left Hand Form lesson you recommended and will begin to incorporate that into my playing. It feels like a lot of UNDOING of improper habits and will take some work.

It reminds me of a breakthrough I had with Craig and Sarah a few years back when they helped me keep my left hand wrist straighter (It had at a near 90* angle most of the time).

So…thank you very much for taking the time to help me… and all your students… improve.

    PEACE

@janaq1 Your compositions are very enjoyable.I just listened to therapy and the 1st little composition. Bravo. Your toccata and fugue was quite good as well. Full of emotion with tight, tidy chord progressions. Your Uke has a terrific tone and quite good resonance. Are you miking the recording, plugged in? I am curious to know what gear if any you are using.
    Thanks. Rick.
