robinboydParticipantJust posting about my progress again to keep myself motivated to keep going.
I’m now up to bar 21. I’m using my usual approach of looking at the tabs first and referring to the videos as necessary. When I got to the E7 chord in bar 21 (1245 transitioning to 1242), I immediately thought “I need to look at the video to see how Andrew thinks we should approach that one.” Funnily enough, he proposes an easier version. Thank you @Andrew 🙂

robinboydParticipantActually, I think I understand now. Normally, the barre version would be easier for me, but there are so many barre chords in that section that my thumb needs a bit of relief, so the 4-finger version would probably work better for me.
robinboydParticipantHey @Andrew – I’m going to echo my question about Sleep Walk. Is it OK if I barre the 6th fret for the Gdim chord in bar 19? I’m quite comfortable with barre chords and playing it with all 4 fingers seems a bit fiddly. (I’ll have enough fiddly stuff to deal with when I transition from A7 to Dm)
robinboydParticipantThat’s great!
robinboydParticipantI’ve got my fingers crossed about the fancy one. Anyway, I’m not going to rush out to get a new one. If I get one, I want to make sure it is nice. In the mean time I’ll keep trying on my tenor. Some of the chords that were giving me grief earlier (like 1346) are much easier now.
robinboydParticipantThis is really frustrating. I have been practicing this on my low G tenor and it’s really hard. I just tried it on my low G concert, though, and not only can I manage those stretch chords, but I can manage them COMFORTABLY! The trouble is that my low G concert only has 14 frets and you need 15 for this arrangement. I think I need a new uke!
robinboydParticipantI haven’t made any adjustments to my ukes, but I’ve had issues with non-wound strings. I think I would have to file the nut a bit to use them effectively. I’ve had no issues with wound strings and Aquila Red unwound low G strings.
I think it requires a bit of trial and error. See what works for you.

robinboydParticipant@lisadmh – Tiffany had been playing with en_joy’s fingering even before he posted his video and it works for her, but I prefer the standard fingering. With regard to not bending the strings (like Andrew mentioned) I find that I bend the strings when I end up with a death grip on the neck. If I focus on pressing down with just enough force to fret cleanly but no more than that, then it helps with that issue. It’s worth trying.

robinboydParticipantNice 5-string Lisa!
robinboydParticipantI think I see what you are getting at, but it would be hard to get such a slow slide to ring out cleanly enough. A bend might work better, but even then, it would die off too quickly on the uke. I think you need to get an electric guitar!
robinboydParticipantI thought I was on top of all the stretch chords and then I came across 5339. Seriously????

robinboydParticipantThanks @Andrew. I love it when you suggest things that I hadn’t even thought of. I’ll make sure I think along those lines next time I play it. It shouldn’t take a lot of effort to incorporate that.

robinboydParticipantThanks. Fixed it
robinboydParticipantFWIW, my first uke teacher used a 4 finger approach most of the time but switched to picado when playing consecutive notes on the same string. It has mostly stuck with me.

Hopefully this counts as a costume. We don’t really do Halloween in Australia and I don’t own any costumes.
@rickeymike commented that he wished there were a few more slides in this arrangement so I added some for him. Otherwise, I plucked the wrong strings a few times and there were a few unintentional pauses near the end, but I didn’t want to re-record it because I had to go out for lunch and getting changed again was too much hassle. Hakamas are a pain to put on and take off. -
