I know that singing isn’t really Matt’s thing, but I wonder if he has any tips for memorising lyrics. I don’t really have any problem memorising chord melodies and other instrumental pieces, but lyrics totally elude me.

@jinajupiter – I love the look on your face as you are performing that. You can tell you are really getting into it.

The transition is actually 6566 to 1566. The 1566 is just to add colour. I was thinking about just playing 6566, but I want to stretch myself (in this case, literally), so I’m still going to give it a go.

    Hi Lyndall

It was awesome and a little bit surreal to run into you at the cinema last night. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished uke. The progress photos looked great.

    Thanks Stephen,

Personally, I don’t find my wrist position uncomfortable, and the only reason I brought it up is that Andrew has commented on it in the past and it was more apparent in this video than in other recent ones.

I’ll work on that eye contact. I actually had my eyes closed through most of the performance because the camera makes me nervous, so it’s better if I can’t see it.

Now that you mention it, it does look that way doesn’t it. It certainly wasn’t intentional. I was sitting at that end of the sofa because it is closer to the fire so it is warmer. I certainly don’t need to rest my arm on the arm rest.

I read somewhere that each size is better with different tunings. The tunings the article recommended are as follows.

    Soprano: D6
    Concert: C6
    Tenor: Bb6
    Baritone: G6

I assume the reason the D6 and Bb6 tunings aren’t so common anymore is because it is easier to be consistent.

It’s amazing what you’ve been able to accomplish in a year. I think it took me about a year to transition smoothly between 4 chords while doing the island strum!

    Hi Holly

I agree that Aquila wound strings are very squeaky (although I just found they are not as squeaky as Pepe Romero Guilele strings). If you decide to go with an unwound string, just be careful because sometimes they are too thick to sit properly in the nut slot and the intonation can suffer when you play up the neck (not something that you do in Kemp’s Jig, but I once tried playing Moon with a fluorocarbon low G string and it sounded very wrong). If all wound strings bother you, then a good option is the Aquila Red unwound low G. It is thinner than Fluorocarbon strings so it will sit in the nut slot and have better intonation with no squeak. It’s alright, but I’ve found I prefer Fremont soloist wound Low G strings. They are wound, but they have minimal squeak and I love the tone.

Here’s our entry for the month (Kemp’s Jig).

I noticed in this video that my right wrist is a bit angled again. I played around with it and found that it tends to happen when I do picado technique but not at other times. I’m not sure how bad it is or how to fix it.

I’m not a huge Dire Straits fan, but Mark Knopfler throws the kitchen sink at those guitar solos. They have it all.

I can see both points of view, but it really depends on the result you want at the end of it. Do you want a faithful recreation of the rhythm guitar part, or do you want a general recreation of the feel of the whole song. If it’s the latter, then I’d go with your approach. I’d probably add some chucking to recreate the snare drum, and there is nothing wrong with throwing in those organ parts before the chorus. It’s just a matter of what you can physically achieve.

It’s interesting isn’t it. I was listening to Dire Straits on the radio and identifying every pull off, hammer on, and bend, whereas a few years ago, I would just have enjoyed the sounds.

If you are starting to feel jaded about pros playing up the neck, just have a look at Paul McCartney here.
