So I’ve my head around the time signatures and I’m working on the artificial harmonics. This arrangement is actually kind of brilliant.

    She certainly does!

Her Facebook says she was final 4 on the Voice US! Wow, that’s impressive!

@jinajupiter – The number of takes varies. I used to to a lot of takes, but I’ve realised that after about 3 takes I start sabotaging myself, so I’ve started to try to record a few days before the deadline and if it’s not working after 3 takes then I just stop and try again the next day.

Kanni had a recommendation on the Guitalele thread.

I agree with Becky that the buzzing on the G string is probably due to problems with fretting rather than the nut, but it’s hard to say without playing it. FWIW, I also have trouble playing tenors. Concerts are much more comfortable. In Jina’s case, I have no idea what is causing the buzz, but I don’t think filing the nut would help. As far as I know, buzzing at the nut is usually caused by the nut slot being too wide, not too narrow. If it is too narrow, the string will sit high, which will affect things like intonation, but it shouldn’t cause buzzing.

Re fret ends sticking out, if you live in a cold/dry climate, you should humidify your ukes and condition your fret boards religiously. When I bought my expensive uke (the light coloured one that I play in most challenges), I bought a humidifier to go with it before discovering that my climate is right in the butter zone so I’ve never needed to use it. My hygrometer is currently sitting next to my guitalele stand, and it is reading 49%.

@kanae926 – Anyway, don’t you speak Japanese too?

I have read that. I bought it from the local music shop before reading that sort of thing. It seems to do a reasonable job, though. Next time I buy products, I’ll check out the Music Nomads products, but I might as well use up what I’ve got.

The body isn’t too bad but the bridge and fretboard are dry. I’m going to stick some lemon oil on them when I change the strings, but I have to order strings first.

Is this one okay? I’m just using photos that I took a while ago.

    Thanks Becky.

It’s a Bruce Wei Arts instrument. He makes them in Vietnam and sells them on Ebay. They have mixed reviews online, but like I said, I got this ultra cheap, so I didn’t expect perfection.

The 12th fret is an abstract design, not a picture. The inlay work is certainly pretty though. Here is what the back looks like.

It’s my job! I’m a J-E translator/interpreter/Japanese-speaking tour guide. It keeps me on my toes. Yesterday I interpreted for a company that delivered parts to a Japanese fishing boat (open-water transfer), and today, I’m translating updates to a Japanese company’s website.

Thanks for the link. That’s awesome! I’ve kind of just been making it up as I go along up to this point.

Yeah, that’s German. I studied German up to 2nd-year university but I don’t remember a whole lot now. Just enough to sing songs, really. Otherwise, I only speak English and Japanese.
