    Hi everyone,

This month I chose Magic Waltz. Clearly this is too difficult for me, but I just fell in love with the tune – particularly after looking at several versions on YouTube, and here.

The first problem is that I just can’t remember it well enough to play the whole way through – so I’ve cheated and stitched together separate attempts at each melody to make one video. The joins are fairly obvious! (If that disqualifies me from the competition, that’s OK too.)

Second problem – it’s just too darn fast! OK, so I’ll try at 75% speed, but even then some of the changes defeated me.

Oh well, you gotta try these things…

    Hi Everybody

I used this challenge to motivate me in getting to grips with Claw Hammer. Ive always found this difficult and have given up every time before getting anywhere.

I used Christophers excellent course this time (only discovered it this month!) and my goal was to play the Claw Hammer Etude, no matter how badly…

Well, I succeeded in playing it very badly, so I’ll score that as success.

Practice was the issue; not enough or consistently – but now I have got over the hurdle of actually getting the basics I will keep this up.

PS – I had a great excuse this month. I have been gifted a second grandson, a brother to my granddaughter!

    Hi Christopher,

Thanks for looking at my progress. Your comments are excellent and made today’s practice go much better. I’ll stick to that routine now!

    Thanks

Boy this is difficult! I’m managing 10 mins practice most days, but any longer in one session is a struggle.

I can do the first downstroke and hit any string while resting my thumb on the G string. Yeah!

When i try to add the second down strum it all goes wrong.

Then when i do the thumb pluck it either doesn’t sound at all or my index decides to do an up-pluck on first string.

Also, keeping the wrist loose needs concentration.

    EXECUTION
I’ll be working on the Claw Hammer technique on a ukulele. In general, I am a moderate intermediate player, but I’ve tried Claw Hammer briefly in the past and got nowhere.
My goal is to be able to play a basic piece, very slowly. I would like to target the Claw Hammer Etude on this site.
I hope to accomplish this by taking Christopher’s course – aiming at the beginning of lesson 4 where he teaches the Etude.
I aim to practice at least once a day for 15 mins, working my way through the course.

    APPLICATION
My goal is to be able to play the Etude, but I will try to play other songs using this technique, if I can at least do it.

    EVALUATION
Monitoring the practice schedule is most important for me. Also, I tend to drift into playing what I already know rather than focus on the next step!
Pacing the course so I reach module 4 is also important.
Ultimately, success would be being able to play the right hand smoothly, albeit slowly on any chord. If I can play the Etude that would be great.

    Hi @kaski85

Your YouTube video tells me it’s private so I can’t see it!

    Hi and welcome Mika!

Greatly look forward to trying some of your lessons – maybe the easier ones!!

For me, RC101 is by far the best teaching site on the web and you couldn’t be joining a better team.

    Hi Everyone

I just loved your spooky composition Littled Trouble in Big China!

So I decided it was a great Halloween theme tune…

I had a very serious go at Rhythmic Blues this month, but it defeated me. Just couldn’t get a video take that was near acceptable (even at 75%). But I love playing it to myself in a locked room – brilliantly of course…

So I aborted and did a last minute take of Harmonising Chords. Apologies for the poor sound quality, my mic has failed and I had to use the PC mic.

@andrew. “I think this is my fav performance of yours to date!”

Wow, that is amazing, thank you!

Wouldn’t have got anywhere without RockClass and the team of pros who put together such awesome pieces with brilliant tuition.

I had a go at Cissy Strut this month. Great piece to learn and try to play – thank you Andrew and Evan for arranging it!

Once I’d got the groove, I could keep up with the backing track (at 75%), but those muted strums are difficult to fit in without losing control of the fingers. So I faked my way though.

I did have a go at the solo, but tripped up on the triplets.

Really enjoyed trying to get this one down, thank you RC101!

    Hi Andrew,

As ever, you’re feedback is very welcome. This month was not my best as the old fingers are suffering a touch of arthritis- but that’s not going to hold me back!

Looking forward to the May challenge.
