Just had a perusal through the submissions. So many in and such good choices and playing. I do appreciate this community so much.

So, a little late on 21st April – I started playing “The Aching Waltz!” What is wrong with me? There’s less than 10 days! But I can’t go past gypsy jazz. So I tried learning everything like Andrew suggests. Ain’t gonna happen. I might get a handle on the lead. Not both lead and rhythm. The hardest bit I reckon is the little solo bit in the rhythm. And then its learning the whole thing off by heart. Why didn’t I start three weeks ago? I’ve spent two days, so too late to change tunes… Hopefully I’ll get a submission in.

This month I decided to learn “Stolen Moments” by Oliver Nelson. I love this tune. So I found a uke version on YouTube by Phil Disera and decided to study that and learn the chords. I’m still a bit stilted in the chord changes, but pretty pleased for the work I’ve put in.

Then I realised I did need bass and drums, so searched for a backing track, found one, slowed it down and stopped it before the solos. Not doing the solo this challenge.

I gave myself quite a challenge, but am pleased with it at the stage it is. Next life – a full jazz band!!!

I’m really enjoying listening to the variety of challenges people have set themselves. I’m very impressed by the creativity, talent and work of this community.

Thanks again Andrew for a great challenge.

Here is my first “diary” entry showing my progress of learning “Stolen Moments” Oliver Nelson’s wonderful jazz piece.
I’m trying to get the chord shapes and … trying … for the feel. This was about a week ago. It’s getting better….. And the in between bits are moving along too.

    Thanks for the challenge, Andrew.

    1) Execution – A while ago I found a version of “Stolen Moments” by Oliver Nelson someone did on youtube on the ukulele. I tried to figure it out,and did an ok job – but I would like to be able to finish learning it (I sort of gave up!). So I will find it again, transcribe it if I can, and practice it

    2) Application – By the end of the month, I’d like to be able to play it (without a solo – that’s a cut above… ) and record it.

    3) Evaluation – I will update my progress and post that “diary” when I post the recording, if all goes according to plan.

I love jazz, and haven’t put enough practice to do what I’d like in this genre.

Thanks Kathy. I liked your version on baritone. What a clever idea to change keys. (I’m not fond of the English lyric either!).
Thanks annemarie, leb379 and Andrew. It was fun to play.

Thanks Ashley for this lovely arrangement. Thanks Andrew, I’m very happy to see this song on RC101!

Like Kathy (Planetfink) I wanted to get this submission in while Channukah is still going. As you can see and hear (noisy background) its mighty windy here. We only sing this in Hebrew so I didn’t include English. But hang in there, I will sing as required….

    Happy Channukah.
Let us all bring our light into the darkness. Much needed right now.

Hi Andrew. Thanks again for all the lessons and your commitment moving the uke community onwards and upwards.

The theme from Succession – that’s so brilliant

Some Aussie songs – such as “Under the milky way” Or “You’re the voice” I’ll think about some others too.

Can we do some slide ukulele lessons?

    Hi All

Here is my version of “Cissy Strut” I did it at 75% because that is as fast as I’ll ever get that solo. I had fun trying to line up the solo with the rhythm, but I think I pretty much got it. Thanks Evan and Andrew. Another fabulous challenging arrangement.

I literally have 4 minutes to get this in on time. Maybe the only recording I’ve ever done in one take.

    Here goes

Thanks @camper. My mother did those paintings. She died about 10 years ago. She loved saying “I held my first paintbrush when I was 90 years old” A wonderful woman!

Here’s my slow version of Flowers – I hadn’t finished practicing when I got COVID – so it is what it is. I was hoping to do it as a thumb pick piece but that didn’t work out.

Thanks RC101 for the challenges this year. I look forward to next year.

Just in the nick of time – here’s my version of Zelda’s Lullaby. Luckily its still yesterday in the USA, so I can still submit this in time for this month’s challenge. I’m really enjoying people’s entries.
