Well hi to you too. I understand! I also like these classes and I find performing in public helps me up my game when I don’t completely mess it up. The nice thing about my club (eastern subs) is there are both performances and strum alongs. I like the connection. And also sound my own thing. I also have a low G (used to play guitar) and other ukes too. Look forward to seeing your posts.

    Cheers

I’m posting another video of me trying out Spongebob Squarepants. Seems the hardest thing is to play while videoing! I can play it perfectly to myself. But that said, I’m pleased with my improvement. There is still a way to go ….

    Hi Miztaken
I’m also in Sydney! I enjoy Andrew’s site and have learned a lot – although not been active for a while – just starting up again.

Are you in a uke club? I find it really fun and helpful. I try and either lead a strum along or perform most months. Learned a lot that way. I also say – hi from Sydney.

Hi Andrew. Here’s my version of Spongebob – not up to speed, but I’m pretty pleased, despite some timing issues, worked on it this evening….

What is your favourite concert ukulele?

    Hi Andrew,

I’d like to know the first steps you take in arranging a ukulele solo. Do you improvise? Do you think through the theory and structure of the tune?

    Cheers

That’s great Lisa. I started last night and its a big challenge. I’m just getting my head and fingers around the intro. I look forward to hearing what you do with it.

Happy New Year Andrew and everyone else

    Thanks for the challenge

    1) Execution – I want to improve on solos.
    2) Application – I came across your lesson on Sultans Of Swing! I love this piece, and it has a couple of solos – plus I will get a chance to improve my rhythm too. I will also have another look at some of the pentatonic scales and practice
    3) Evaluation – I will evaluate how I’m going at the end of each week. I might post twice – half way through the month, and at the end of the month.

    Any suggestions are welcome

    Cheers

    Hi Taimane

I look forward to you coming to Australia one day! I would love to see you play live.

It seems you do quite a bit of wonderful improvising when you play. What do you think are the best starting points for someone to practice to develop skill in improvising.

    Thanks

Hmm was on public, but I think I didn’t publish it. I’ll get the hang of this sometime. Let me know if it works

    Hi Andrew

My challenge was to develop a good strategy for practicing, including new songs, new strumming patterns, and other areas. Sadly this hasn’t gone so well – although I have thought about what to do, I haven’t actually developed a plan.

That said, it has meant that I’ve actually been more concerted in my practice while still being a little random. I tried to develop a percussive strum for this song, Gatekeeper, and although I can’t keep up the two different strums, I’m quite pleased with where I got to.

I also tried different inversions of some of the chords in different parts. I think I have to listen to them all and decide what goes best where.

I have a question – is the strum percussive enough? And how to get that? Do you have any advice on the strum for this song.

By the way, excuse my voice, I’m getting over a cold and cough!

    Thanks again for the challenge

Andrew thanks for the reply about fleshing out my plan. I didn’t actually see it until today, so I will expand on the detail of my strategy as you suggested.

9 Days after I set my challenge here is where I’m up to.

Successes – although I haven’t actually developed a strategy for playing, just doing this challenge has meant I’ve put more attention on my practicing
    – I did look at your practice video Andrew, and wrote notes, even looked at the ear practice site you suggested. That didn’t work out so well for me – so I decided to try and work out what i liked in some songs on the uku. I’ll post some of the videos or audios of those later this week or next.
The ear practice was on the Eva Cassidy version of “time after time” and the rhythm for “Gatekeeper” while singing, and a lead break in “Everything I do gohn be funky” Also practiced some chord inversions on “Gatekeeper” for fun

Still to do – systematic way to increase my strumming range.

    Thanks again for the challenge
