Hi All,
Here’s my end of the month submission. This month, I chose to learn the clawhammer technique, and I began formally journaling my practice sessions. A couple of things I noticed:
1) I really enjoy the clawhammer sound, especially in faster songs. I found myself wanting to rush the learning process more than usual this month as I tried to play more quickly. That was not helpful, and journaling helped reinforce the frequent message to myself to slow down and have patience with myself. I haven’t been able to get Shortnin’ Bread up to full speed yet, but it is fun to play.
2) I borrowed a banjolele, and it hurts my right forearm to play it! I see there are arm guards available, so if I get my own banjolele, I’ll definitely invest in one. In the meantime, I’ve been tying a thick sock around my arm (it’s under my sleeve in this video) which was clunky but helpful.
I’ve been enjoying following everyone’s progress this month!

This challenge provides a great opportunity to focus on something I’ve been interested in but haven’t set aside time to work on–clawhammer technique.
1) Execution – I will go through the Clawhammer Technique course on RC101. I am an intermediate player, but I had no experience with this technique until a couple of days ago, when I began with the first lessons of the course. I try to practice 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes per session, though my practices aren’t solely on one song, technique, etc. My goal is to complete the course and be able to use the clawhammer technique.
2) Application – By the end of the month, I will play a version of Shortnin’Bread.
3) Evaluation – This year, I plan to document my ukulele goals and practice sessions more formally and consistently. For this Monthly Challenge, I will be able to evaluate my process and progress as I learn the technique (e.g., what works in my practice session, what has helped master a particular bar, what needs changing) through journaling. I will also submit a video of my playing Shortnin’ Bread.

@The_Bumble_Bard I love the clawhammer sound on the Path of the Wind. I think I like it better than the original piece! I’ve been meaning to work through the clawhammer lessons, but I haven’t gotten to it yet. Thanks for the inspiration!

Here’s my submission of Path of the Wind. I used the chorus effect with the Flight Soundwave System. While it’s still rough in spots, I thought the effect added a bit to the mystical feel that the song has.
I’m sorry to the original winner, but I’m thankful to have won! I love the look of the ukulele and can’t wait to play it!

I chose Morning Dew since I need to work on my hammer ons and pull offs. I still have difficulty hitting them consistently, especially at higher speeds. Measures 6 (that pull off to the 1) and 8 (pull off from 7 to 5) were particularly challenging for me even though I slowed it down a bit.

Adriana@andrew Thanks for the feedback! I took a look at the picado technique and tried it with the Syncopated Speed Picking piece, and it definitely feels like a more natural movement for my right hand.

Here’s my entry with Fields of Gold. I bought a new microphone to record with and found that it really picks up any small sound. Now I really need to work on not having my fingers stick to the strings so much!

Hi Everyone!
Here’s my take on Margaritaville. I chose this one since it’s a fun summer song, and I wanted to challenge myself to memorize an intermediate arrangement in the few weeks I won’t be travelling this month. I was able to learn the piece, but I need to keep at it so that I can pick up more speed and smooth over the rough parts. Thanks for the fun arrangement!
