anyon1ParticipantHi All!
I am a premium member.
Here’s my rendition of Clocks. For a “beginner” song, it was full of challenges (double bar!) but fun to learn and play. I had a difficult time keeping a steady tempo in the recording even though I played along with Soundslice over and over… Thanks for a great lesson!

anyon1ParticipantWow, Rick! That sounds great!

anyon1Participant@jbmills07 I hate to hear that! I’ve been dealing with ‘golfer’s elbow.” It improves a bit then acts up again. Luckily, only some songs I play seem to be painful when playing ukulele. Hopefully the song I choose for this month’s challenge doesn’t aggravate it further!

anyon1ParticipantHi Everyone!
I’ve enjoyed the entries so far! I worked on Punk-182 this month. I’m getting more used to playing the electric ukulele, but I’m still struggling with using a pick, so I decided to leave that for another month…

anyon1ParticipantThanks @gi_gi_!
And thanks, Andrew, for the feedback. I love the sound of the grace note, but it would definitely be more manageable without it!

anyon1ParticipantHi! I’ve been enjoying everyone’s entries! I worked on The Irish Washerwoman. It’s at about half speed which is an improvement from the 30% I was at when I started the month. @gi_gi_ is right; when seen it played at full speed, it is astounding!
When I pick up the pace, I’m even less consistent, and I often slide the A string off of the fretboard when I play pull offs. I’m not sure if it’s something about my technique in general or if that is something that will improve as I keep practicing to pick up speed.
Thanks for the challenge! Please omit me from the drawing this month.

anyon1Participant@nat-uke Great job! I like that you continued on with the banjolele this month. I know how challenging it can be wanting to play at top speed but needing to slow down for accuracies/timing sake. I think you sounded good with the backing track, and would like to hear it again when you get it up to full speed!

anyon1ParticipantI worked on People Are Strange this month. I love the look of this electric ukulele but haven’t really played it much until now since it seems to take a different touch and is less forgiving than the acoustic ukuleles I have. It also took some time to figure out what kind of tone I wanted to get out of it. I chose to use it for this song since it looks so much like the Gibson SG Special Robbie Krieger of The Doors uses, and I finally wanted to dig in learn to play a song on it. I think RC 101 needs more electric ukulele lessons!

anyon1Participant@gi_gi_ Thanks so much for the feedback! Great singing on Summertime!
@leb397 Thank you! Chucking is fun. I’m glad you enjoyed working on it this month. I often find it hard to hit it correctly in time when trying to fit it in a fingerpicking arrangement. It seems like there is always something to work on!
@misterbones Wow! Great clawhammer tunes! And singing in the midst of all of that… Hopefully I can be coordinated enough to do that one day!January 30, 2024 at 7:16 pm in reply to: Participate in the January 2024 Member Challenge – You Decide What To Work On! #60450
anyon1Participant@nat-uke Thank you, and hello to a fellow banjolele newbie! The first take of your song was pretty, but I thought the second one with the banjolele really let the clawhammer style ring out. The new banjolele sounds great, and I’m glad to hear it has an arm guard! Thanks for sharing the music. I’m looking forward to continuing working on the clawhammer technique, so this will help!

anyon1ParticipantHi All,
Here’s my end of the month submission. This month, I chose to learn the clawhammer technique, and I began formally journaling my practice sessions. A couple of things I noticed:
1) I really enjoy the clawhammer sound, especially in faster songs. I found myself wanting to rush the learning process more than usual this month as I tried to play more quickly. That was not helpful, and journaling helped reinforce the frequent message to myself to slow down and have patience with myself. I haven’t been able to get Shortnin’ Bread up to full speed yet, but it is fun to play.
2) I borrowed a banjolele, and it hurts my right forearm to play it! I see there are arm guards available, so if I get my own banjolele, I’ll definitely invest in one. In the meantime, I’ve been tying a thick sock around my arm (it’s under my sleeve in this video) which was clunky but helpful.
I’ve been enjoying following everyone’s progress this month!

anyon1ParticipantThis challenge provides a great opportunity to focus on something I’ve been interested in but haven’t set aside time to work on–clawhammer technique.
1) Execution – I will go through the Clawhammer Technique course on RC101. I am an intermediate player, but I had no experience with this technique until a couple of days ago, when I began with the first lessons of the course. I try to practice 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes per session, though my practices aren’t solely on one song, technique, etc. My goal is to complete the course and be able to use the clawhammer technique.
2) Application – By the end of the month, I will play a version of Shortnin’Bread.
3) Evaluation – This year, I plan to document my ukulele goals and practice sessions more formally and consistently. For this Monthly Challenge, I will be able to evaluate my process and progress as I learn the technique (e.g., what works in my practice session, what has helped master a particular bar, what needs changing) through journaling. I will also submit a video of my playing Shortnin’ Bread.
Happy New Year!

I’ve enjoyed learning to play this beautiful arrangement in the midst of other holiday-type activities this season. Here I am in front of my family’s tree and Yule(Tube) log.

anyon1ParticipantThanks for the info @katazumiri! It doesn’t look like that particular video editor is available for my device, but I see many free options. I’ll have to test out a few!
