becky7777ParticipantI definitely need all the tips for this I can get.
becky7777ParticipantYou guys think I should record my challenge song for August, even though it’s unofficial?
Since this month is physically not too possible for me, and I was depressed as all get out yesterday, I decided to find the song Angela (The song they used for Taxi, the tv show) and see if I could figure it out on uke. (That makes absolutely no sense, but focused on it, it made me feel better while I was working on it. I guess jamming smooth jazz on uke makes me feel better when I’m really sad lol.)
Anyway, no one I could find on youtube made a ukulele arrangement for it. My tentative plan this month is to smooth out what I have, and write down the tabs for it as my unofficial ‘challenge’ for September. I will need help fixing the tabs btw if anyone is working on that skill. Lol.
For whatever reason, I managed to get an A,B,(A) type thing yesterday.
I played what I could remember of it for my friend this morning and apparently both the A and B melody are recognizable enough he sang along with it. That’s something at least.

becky7777ParticipantAnne- **Big hug** Your gypsy woman performance was great! π What I said before still applies. If you need anything, or just anyone to vent to, everyone’s here.
Joe- Congratulations on winning the gift certificate! π
becky7777ParticipantAnirbaf- I stopped looking at songs by difficulty ranking everywhere. In my opinion it kind of depends on the person, what they studied, and what they like.
My personal “choose your own adventure” coarse path, which is a mess of me skipping around, along with monthly challenge song choices, and everything else going on with me, led me to wherever I’m at right now. (Which is a weird place, but it’s definitely some stage of beginner at least, lol.
Story time!
It started as a joke with miztaken in a private message because of the famous “If you can sing it, you can play it” thing Andrew says. (Which is true… to a point! So of coarse I need to poke fun. lol..)
I linked miztaken the Siccas Guitars video of Ana Vidovic playing Asturias. (with the coughing! It’s my favorite performance! And Ana’s Lisker Foundation, Recuerdos de la Alhambra performance, because she used an ambulance siren.. I want to be able to do that too! lol.)
I can totally sing Asturias! Trying to sing any song that I like, with tremolo, just sounds really goofy and doesn’t help me “play it”! π
Mike Holland made really great ukulele tabs for Asturias though, so im slowly working my tremolo. (I NEED tremolo!!)
Asturias is a “grade 8 or 9 out of 10, classical guitar piece” btw. π Mike’s arrangement is about as close as ukulele can get I think, so i’m guessing it’s similar difficulty level on uke. I’ve been playing since mid October last year, so….. I’m probably just insane, but try everything you like! (Typed so much sorry!)
becky7777ParticipantMaybe a text with links page? Kind of like a sitemap or index type thing with an alphabetized or date added etc type dropdown…. (Tossing ideas)
I have no idea if something like that can be made so we could sort the lessons so it’s saved on our machines or something? We can kind of do that with records using lists but you get the idea I hope.
Again just an idea.

becky7777ParticipantJina- That’s awesome! You find really great music related things to participate in!
becky7777ParticipantLOL! I just tried it… I can reach that just barely on the tt, and not within a reasonable amount of time. No matter how far my fingers can fan out, right now. I’m using that more commonly used one for stretch at the moment. That 1346 shape. Sounds similar to yours because of 1 and 6. No idea what it’s name is. That’s still a challenge to get to in time for me at the first fret on my uke. Let alone your chord. π (I even have trouble on soprano with yours, lol.)

becky7777ParticipantThat was awesome. π
becky7777ParticipantThank you Holly. You pointed out I can probably crochet a strap pretty quick. I’ve been taking my strap off and moving it as needed. π« (I want to tablet weave one at some point though.)
If you’re still having issues make a video that’s the #1 Fastest easiest way to get help.
Not sure if this will help you. First, if the stretches are hard take your time! (Grats on the coarse btw!) You totally don’t want to hurt your fretting hand.
With chords or finger positions I have a hard time with (but that I can do) I hold it for a bit and just play out of it. Either what im working on or just made up picking patterns, till it starts getting uncomfortable then I rest. Massage my hand etc.
If it’s a hard stretchy shape like the G7(1)? Try the shape up near the 12th fret (small frets) on your concert. Move down a fret until you feel stretchy but not too uncomfortable and see if you can hang out with a couple chord shapes around there.(anything that covers all the strings and maybe helps stretch.) I’m doing that with a hard chord on ukulele right now. It’s moving slowly down towards the nut.
Another option is to look into different fingerings like with G7(1) in 5’2 as an example. If you can, try barring the 4th fret? and it will free up some finger reach.
Anyway ty for the reminder that crochet can make straps too. π

becky7777ParticipantWorked joe! π
becky7777ParticipantI just listened to the studio version again. My opinions reflect me not being able to play my suggestion below, but what I’d shoot for.
I’d go with trying to keep a steady chuck type thing going to keep the steady rhythm sound the rhythm guitar and drums give to the song. (I agree with robin, the nail sound tapping the strings would be a good snare hit, and falls into the iconic rhythm guitar sound.) That doesn’t mean endless strumming btw, but if it were me I’d try to keep that da da da chuck thing. If it interferes with the lyric notes.. I don’t know, since i’m a noob i’d need to mess around with anything and see what sounded the most true to song and kept the rhythm? (And probably change something lol.π can’t help myself.)
I know this wasn’t much help deciding, but you can always solo the lyrics on uke with your hubby doing the rhythm guitar and everyones happy π. (Don’t kill me lol.)
becky7777ParticipantI agree with miz, figuring stuff out by ear is hard. (And frustrating! π) You nailed it
becky7777ParticipantLisa, I think that ‘sense’ of what people are doing is what is making me label songs as “sounds easy enough to play.” followed by a reality check lol. As long as it isn’t impossible or painful I try though! LOL! It’s a bummer to find out classical tunes I like are mostly grade 8-9 out of 10. Same goes for my “taste” in most other tablature I consume.
I am very convincing to myself for a few minutes when i’m listening to something that “I can totally do that.” LOL!
Sounds like you had a good time at the show though. π
becky7777ParticipantLol Ricky π Sadly a lot of my bad mistakes turn out to be really awful sounding and there’s no way I’d want to repeat them! Then I got those rare wonderful mistakes where my fingers do their own thing and I’m all like “oh my gosh that just came from me!” But sadly, nope, mighta came from me but it was a complete fluke of muscle memory hooking up with a spasm or something lol!
I’d LOVE to do those again though. π
